This is an absolutely beautiful and brilliant book and a MUST for every songwriter or even that person with a song in their heart. Sarah Sheppard combines beautiful photos with word prompts that get the songwriter's creative juices flowing...in fun and clever ways. If you're not a songwriter...it's a beautiful book for the coffee table...but warning, even you may be tempted to pick up a pen and write a hit song! Congratulations to the author, Sarah Sheppard, on a job well done!!!

This is a very pretty book. However, I was a little disappointed. The prompts are not all that unusual, and they are spaced out in a way that, although pretty, is not really necessary. I would have liked a more condensed book.

Beautifully illustrated book- though it is slim, it is chock full of great song-writing ideas. An excellent buy!

I visited Virginia City a few months ago and rode on a restored V & T train. It was a lot of fun. I wanted learn more about the history surrounding the train. This is an excellent book about the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. In fact, every "Images of America" book I have purchased has been excellent. I have around 15 of this series now and will be purchasing more. When I am looking for a history of something specific in the United States, this is the first book series I go to. I hope they keep expanding the series.

The book is very comprehensive and descriptive of the V&t history. I grew up two blocks from the V&T roundhouse in Reno and my mother took me along for it's last trip to Carson City. The book is very complete and brought back some forgotten memories of the old right of way and out buildings that stood for a long time after. Excellent history of it's service. Restoration of the route between Virginia City and Carson City now provides rides using the old engines. Worth a visit.

Great in-depth telling of a proud and sadly long departed piece of Comstock history.

I am a big fan and supporter of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad - the famous Nevada shortline that purportedly hauled the equivalent combined weight of all of its' track, locomotives, and rolling stock in silver bars during the heyday of the Comstock silver strike that it was constructed to service. The V&TRR was noted not only for the beauty & quality of its' picturesque Victorian period steam engines and passenger cars, back in the day, but also for the fact that so many examples of its' 1800's vintage equipment have survived intact into our modern era. The railroad and the men who created it, and profited from the wealth of the Comstock Lode that it hauled, are equally entwined in the colorful history of the American west.The story of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad has been well chronicled in many books over the years by a variety of authors who share a passion for the diminutive rail line that borders on romantic love! Railway historians and V&T 'addicts' such as: Lucius Beebe, Ted Wurm, and Mallory Hope Farell have all produced previous paeans to their favorite railroad in lavish volumes of photos and purple prose that cover every angle of the story. With so much excellent coverage already in print it is nice to be able to report that the latest monograph on the subject brings still more new and interesting visuals and stories of the fabled rail line to light. Much of the credit for this achievement is due to the background and credentials of the book's author: Stephen Drew. Mr. Drew is a well respected railway historian, now affiliated with the California State Railway Museum (which possesses and displays several of the V&T's restored jewel-like locomotives) and he has had a long personal relationship with the V&T. He brings his scholarship and unique knowledge and appreciation for the subject to this slim volume and provides an excellent new addition to the roster of V&TRR books.The physical size of the book is relatively modest, but the printing quality and photo reproduction are excellent throughout so the small size does not seem an issue. The format of the book presents most of the information in the form of 'captions' accompanying a myriad of archival photographs. The images provide examples of all aspects of the V&T throughout its' history, including sections on the Comstock mines & mills, the Lake Tahoe based lumber and flume-ing industry, and many of the notable personages involved with the railway. People (such as myself) who may be familiar with the other, previously noted, publications on the railroad will doubtless find that some of the photographic images have been reproduced elsewhere before - but - there are also MANY images that are previously un-published... definitely much fresh material to be enjoyed! A most complete overview is provided that should satisfy both V&T 'fanatics' and those less familiar with the story. Personally I'm very pleased with this new edition and would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject matter.

This book is a photo essay of the history of the V&T RR from its start in 1868, to its abandonment in 1949, to what it is today. It is full of great and rare photos, several of which I have never seen before. For anyone interested in the history of the V&T, is well worth the money.

I hate to doubt anyone who claims to be abused as a child, as I work with abused children, but there are certain elements in this story that I question. I have read most of the books in this genre, and there are some accounts that sound more likely to have happened than others. That's not to say some parts of the story aren't true, but I really question some of this account. Even books like A Child Called It, have been questioned as far as veracity of the entire story. Other reviewers have brought up the same questions, so I won't go into them, but if you want a read a really well-written story in this genre read The Field Guide to Betrayal. The writing in this book, Call Me Tuesday, wasn't bad compared to others, I mean some don't even have suitable punctuation. I prefer the other book I mentioned, TFGTB, as the child is definitely of a survivor mentality. Where some of these books are great for calling attention to abuse, they tend to make you wonder what is fact and what is fiction. I realize memoirs are the recollections of people and they can differ based on who in the family is telling the story. Regardless, kudos to the author for bringing attention to a sad topic.

The day after I finished this book (in two sittings), a very unusual obituary made the news. In it, a dead Nevada woman's children welcomed her death and described their utter contempt for her after years of physical and mental abuse, in the hopes of getting people talking about the problem of child abuse. It was a horrific reminder that child abuse is all too real, and it happens in all walks of life. When you read "Call me Tuesday," you'll realize very quickly that you simply cannot make this kind of story up.Behind a seeming normal, middle-class Southern facade, the author, known as Tuesday (for the actress Tuesday Weld), describes an unenviable childhood that turns unbearable after severe head trauma transforms her mother into a sadistic jailer who denies not only love and comfort, but food and most other basic needs. Her mother revels in the way that other children ignore and mistreat her daughter, as it only confirms her belief, which she drums into her daughter, that the girl is ugly and defective. Even her father, who makes some gestures to help her enjoy brief moments of normality outside the home, is caught up by his own helplessness in the wake of this tornado of an abusive woman. He isn't the only adult who fails to help, either.I don't think for a moment that Rose, the mother, was "normal" to begin with. As the story unfolds, we learn she always had a cruel streak, and very likely enjoyed, Munchhausen by Proxy-style, being the pitied mother of a sickly child. It seems likely that Tuesday was always the discounted one, an afterthought (not to mention, free labor) whose distress at the belief that she was responsible for the death first of a family pet and then her polio-stricken sister was roundly ignored. When her mother emerges from the hospital as some kind of character from a horror flick, Tuesday is already easy prey.What saves this memoir from maudlin self-indulgence is author Leigh Byrne's confident, believable voice. You really do feel like you are traveling along with Tuesday on this hellish journey through the eyes of a child, then a teenager, sad and wise beyond her years. This is a once-in-a-blue-moon type find, and I look forward to the continuation of the story.

I bought this book 3 days ago and found it so well-written and compelling, that I stayed up all night reading it. As soon as I finished reading Call Me Tuesday, I immediately bought her second book, Call Me Cockroach. I finished reading the second one this morning.I highly recommend both books... unless you are one of those people who had a golden childhood and you cannot imagine any parent, especially a mother, hating her precious little girl and violently abusing her, almost to the point of death. As for me, I do not have any doubts whatsoever about the truth of this story. I had a momster very much like Tuesday's. The details are different, but the pain and the deep psychological wounds are the same.I am so grateful to the author for writing her memoirs and sharing them with the world, so people like me can know that we aren't the only one... and to show us the way to healing (as much as possible), and to a happy, fulfilling life. I am especially grateful, because I know how hard it is to put this kind of story in writing. I first tried to write a memoir when I was in my early twenties. Today I have a granddaughter in her early twenties, who is a graduate student at Harvard, and I am still trying to write my memoir.

I am halfway through this book and just love it. Very well written and extreme eye opener. As I turn the pages, I keep wishing I could get my hands on this monster who calls herself a mother. The definition of a mother is not just giving birth, but the care and love that goes with it. I could never have children and would have given anything to be blessed with the opportunity. I have always thought though, that you need a license to drive a car, but anyone who can get pregnant is allowed to go home with a living being and be trusted to do the right thing. Just so sad and I know this story is just one of millions out there in this world in similar conditions. I cannot wait to continue reading and I pray that Tuesday gets justice in the end.

This book is a must-read for any family of faith. It helps children understand that God, an abstract concept, can be perceived in concrete things and situations. I gave it four stars instead of five because my four-year old wasn't incredibly excited about it and it seemed a little drawn-out to me. That said, we will continue to read it during devotions because it is a very valuable tool for helping children know God. I think that it would also be an excellent book to read to Sunday school classes and even a conversation starter for youth and adults.

Thank you God for loving us😇and showing your children how to love and take care of one another! Amen and again I say Amen!

Introduced to this book a few years ago by a friend's rabbi during a children's sabbath celebration, my husband and I were quite impressed. The art is so inviting to look at. But more importantly, the content is worth sharing with children you want to share a positive image of faith with very early on -- whether they are children who share your own religion or are in another religion that you respect.We are Christian and have now shared this lovely book with children in our congregation, children in other Christian denominations (both Catholic and Protestant) and children being raised with Jewish traditions. We hope it will be a blessing to many -- adults and children -- as it has been to us.

I bought this book about a year ago for my daughter (now 5 and 1/2) as she had started asking a lot of questions about God. One of her friend's Mom's saw the book at our house and thought it looked nice and wanted to borrow it. I decided to order one for her. This book doesn't try to answer some very difficult questions about God, but it does try to give the child the sense that God is everywhere and is a part of our lives all of the time and in every situation. It is simply written and beautifully illustrated. A great book for children of any religion.

This one book will lead you step by step through each of the processes involved. Having NO PRIOR HOME BUYING KNOWLEDGE, I eagerly opened this book with highlighter in hand, reading cover to cover on all topics from finding an honest agent to buying fixer-uppers, researching mortgages, neighborhoods, etc., even whether you should consider renting vs. buyng, and all the little details in between. You will learn things you never knew before, and I found myself constantly referring to many chapters throughout our experience in searching for a home. I recommend this book to anyone seeking stratightforward and easy to understand info, no fancy jargon to cut through, just plain language writing on a very in depth subject. The book's lay out is reader-friendly as well, making it very simple to locate exactly the subject you need. Don't pass this one up!

I bought this book a few days after deciding I would start saving to purchase my first home. The information they provide is very easy to understand and they have some great tips. Due to the housing markets changes over the past 3 years the book is a little out of date by mentioning no down payment mortgages and a few other things but this book is from 2009 I look forward to the newest version in a few months.It did help me understand ARM vs Fixed rate loans and all the paperwork and information that will need to be provided when applying for a mortgage. I really enjoyed reading this and it didn't feel like homework like some of these types of books do.

I read this book from cover to cover before buying my first home last year. The information is invaluable, especially the section on how to find a sound realtor (I did, and she was able to negotiate a good price for me) and how not to buy more house than you should. The author also tells you what to look for in a house and alerts you to pitfalls that the first-time home buyer might be completely unaware of, and walks you through how to obtain a mortgage and the various steps involved in bidding on a house and closing the deal.This is a must-read for someone who has never bought a home (be it a house or a condo) before and is immensely educational and helpful.Highly recommended!

This book felt like a great resource as we read through it pre-purchase, but, as the process began to solidify, we were disappointed to find that rules and laws vary so much state to state that our information was either erroneous, not fully explained, or unrealistic. We just bought our first home (in Texas, so you have an idea of what area is completely inapplicable to the book) and could not find one real estate agent who even knew what an activity list was, let alone maintained one. We had a long list of questions for the sellers, but maybe 5 of the 50 were answered at all, let alone to our satisfaction. Granted, the books says "walk away" from things like this, but, when pressed into a homebuying timeline due to job relocation, who has the luxury of waiting? It is a great resource for those that have the time for a few dozen "walk aways," but, for the rest of us, it will be of little use. (Although, I use it now to remind me to kick myself when I find yet another thing that did not go according to plan.) Our first home purchase went surprisingly smooth and we love our new house, but I found little of that can be blamed on good content of this book.

My wife and I purchased this book to help us in our hunt for our first home. We were total novices about the entire home buying process since we had always been apartment dwellers. I read through the book several times over the course of a month. The book armed me with good questions to ask my realtor and the seller's agent as well. It was particularly invaluable when addressing mortgage loans and funding alternatives.48 hours from now my wife and I will close on our first home. This book gave us confidence in our decision making by helping us evaluate a wide variety of criteria we would not have otherwise thought of. Layla and dolan are such a funny pair. I laughed out loud numerous times, but got teary eyed also. It was such a great book that i read it in a few hours, I couldn’t put it down. Cant wait for sloanes book next!

Layla has trouble with Dolan, a 7-foot alien who is obsessed with her and thinks they are mates. He follows her around and on Christmas he danced around playing air guitar and singing a song for her. She was mortified. Her friend Sloane thinks it’s funny. She also has an alien obsessed with her named Exer – and he’s the one that catches Layla’s attention because he looks more human than the others, no scales and lots of muscles. The meaner Layla treats Dolan, the more patient he becomes with her. He keeps trying to show her that he would be an excellent mate for her, but she just gets angry at him. She rejects him over and over again.When Dolan again comes near her, she begins to talk to him about “manga”. It’s nonsense to him and she knows it, but she keeps talking on and on and on about it to see if he will listen to her like her brother, Shep. Shep was the only one who listened to her every word, and she misses him very much. Dolan did listen, despite not understanding what she said. But he made that effort. Was this a beginning for them? When she saw Dolan later walk off with his brother, Azan, she actually watched them to make sure everything was okay between the brothers, especially after she saw them physically fighting. Again, it was important to her; she missed her own brother. When Dolan asks her to come eat something with him, she agrees. They talk about the available food and what is “beyond” where there is other protein. She is finding him less annoying today since they are actually communicating, even if it is a strange conversation. Everyone knew about how Sidyths don’t eat meat, but apparently some could eat fish, and the round object he was eating did look like salmon. Other Sidyth ate the protein provided, but Dolan needed to eat protein/fish because he couldn’t process what his people were supposed to eat, like having a good allergy. She was beginning to understand and see how he was different. And the more she learned, the better she liked him. Was there hope for a future for them?For some reason, this story did not catch my interest very well, although it did get better as I continued reading. I didn’t especially like Layla but am not sure why exactly. Dolan was goofy, but he had some good qualities such as perseverance and loyalty. He really cared about Layla and would not give up on her. Layla was devoted to her brother, Shep, and took on an “entertainer” job to earn money for his medical treatments, not even sure the money was getting to him! The humor interspersed just didn’t draw me in as it usually does. But the series has promise and I would read another book by the author. It just may be this particular one was not for me. I do love the cover, although the picture doesn’t look at all like the Sidyth were described in the book. Grab a copy and see how Dolan and Layla figure out whether they were meant to be or not!

That said, the author does a good job of bringing the reader up to speed on the previous books with a well written prologue! Kudos for that!The giant, scaled, humanoid Sidyth🐺🍆🌋 men, have purchased 20 human females, all arranged by exiled Prince Korben👑🐺🍆🌋. The Sidyth🐺🍆🌋 are making a new start on a new planet🌍, Hethdiss, and the human💋 women are to be treated as equals.Layla💃💋 is one of the human women, but she still has her doubts about the sincerity of the Sidyth🐺🍆🌋. She feels she has traded one prison for another. She regards, Dolan🐺🍆🌋, the Sidyth who as chosen her, as an annoying stalker! She is doing this for the 💰money that is supposed to be sent to help her sick brother. In reality, she doesn't even know if the money is getting home.Layla💃💋 has a crush on Exer🐺🍆🌋, but it seems he is going to mate with her friend, Sloane. What to do about that? Be jealous. Ignore Dolan🐺🍆🌋, the Sidyth who adores her.....ARC Received from Booksprout🌱I also got the book with KU.There are definitely adult situations. Laylas continued angst and denial over Dolan's intentions towards her became annoying to me as the book progressed. The book is well written and interesting, though. I loved Dolan's character. He seemed like the only adult in this situation.

I voluntarily read an arc of this book for an honest review. I love this book. I loved Dolan and Layla together. This book had twists and turns I wasn’t expecting. Layla s convinced she likes Exer. Dolan wants Layla for his Chosen but she’s not interested. I loved the transformation they both went through. Layla has depths to her and Dolan is a work in progress. He wants Layla so badly he’s willing to do anything. He’s completely devoted to her but so arrogant he can’t express his feelings. Layla just wants someone to love her for herself not what she can do for the,. This is a journey you will really enjoy. This story is about Layla and Dolan. Layla is a human who signed up to go into space for money to help her brother get the medicine he needs back on Earth. She and the other humans land on a planet to be paired with Sidyths. Dolan has picked Layla out to be his chosen one but Layla puts up a good fight. She feels like she shouldn't have happiness but with Dolan she finds that she deserves that happiness. It was a good story. It was a little slow at first but picked up as you get into the story.
