A nearly perfect book, AN INFINITY OF LITTLE HOURS is one of the best non-fiction works I've read on any subject in some time. Meticulously researched and beautifully written, the book serves as a guide to the austere, eremitic Carthusian life as it was experienced prior to Vatican II. As the author, Nancy Klein Maguire, notes, there's not a lot available for the layperson to read about this order of monks cut off from the world, and whose way of life has changed little since the 11th century. We are truly fortunate, then, to have Maguire as our host for this journey.Maguire follows the lives of five young men who entered the Parkminster Charterhouse in England in the years 1960 to 1961: three men from the U.S. (Chicago, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn), one from Germany, and another from Ireland. That they do not all stay in the life quickly becomes clear, but wondering who stays and who leaves is part of the charm. (Warning: the photos are spoilers for the ending.) What's really wonderful is how Maguire gives the reader a chance to experience vicariously these men's lives from the point they literally approach the door of the Charterhouse and enter into its life to the time they leave or become professed. We are seduced by the life, but also acutely feel its physical discomforts. We grow with the men as the initial romance wears off, and the political reality of divisions between the monks becomes apparent. In the end, we are enchanted by the monks who persevere in the life, but also embrace the men who leave, fully sharing their relief. Maguire is a gifted writer; her prose is like freshly made butter, smooth and delicious. I think I could read anything she chose to write next, and plan to.What profoundly struck me in reading Maguire's book was how these men, in entering the Carthusian life presumably to stay to the end of their lives, were essentially preparing for their deaths. At first I found the notion bewildering, even suffocating. I mean, our culture celebrates youth and fears death, doesn't it. Reading this book really made me think a lot about death. Could I forgo all that the world offers, close myself off forever within stone walls, and search for God while awaiting death under the same routine for decades? Happily married and middle aged (the Carthusians don't accept candidates older than 45), I know that the question is moot--but would I have been able to accept the life at 21? And am I ready now to look straight in death's face? How deep is my faith? If you have any interest at all in the Carthusians or in monasticism, you will want to read this book. It makes a nice companion to the recently released, splendid documentary on the Grande Chartreuse, INTO GREAT SILENCE.

I got this book a few days ago and read it through in a sitting. It is a chronicle of 5 young men who enter the carthusian order in England back in the early 1960's. We first meet each one as he prepares to ring the bell to the monastery to begin his postulancy. We are then taken through the years of novitiate and temporary vows. The question always is: who will leave and who will stay? The carthusian way of life is not for the faint of heart: It is intense, with lots and lots of solitude. There is plenty of room for petty annoyances to get blown out of proportion. My own personal favorite vignette/comment was the young man who thought he would never be able to learn the complex, atonal polyphonic chant -- only to discover that it was simply that the monks were offkey and not able to stay together in the singing. Personally, I found that charming. As to the nightmares -- Actually, I spent a few years in a monastic order in the mid-1960s, and have continued to dream of the monastery and the nuns at least every few months. However, no nightmares -- just friendly revisiting. I think it is such a focussed, intense life that it is absolutely formative and leaves a permanent stamp on a person. Generally, the stamp is a positive one. It helps keep things in perspective and certainly makes one a more compassionate person. I recommend this book highly. It is an honest, no holds barred, look at this life.

I actually read this while on a retreat at a Benedictine Monastery. I have spent time as a visitor in Benedictine and Trappist monasteries and am very familiar with their lives and the Rule of St. Benedict that is the foundational document for their lives. The Carthusians follow the Rule of St. Bruno and are, in many ways, less monastics and more hermits living in very rustic cells, separately, but under one roof. Their lives, by design, are very severe. One person referred to them once as the 'Navy Seals' of monks. A very small number of those who enter this life remain in it.In reading the book one begins to understand why so few people remain Carthusians. They live in very primitive conditions and the long period of being uncomfortable, often cold, and isolated from human contact is a long term calling very few people actually have. In following the lives of the five novices, the reader begins to get an understanding on their commitments, their passions, their difficulties, and how this journey impacted each of them. This religious order is truly made for very few and much of their life is hidden from view and is largely unknown. This particular book gives the reader a glimpse behind the scenes. One gains an appreciate for those who remain in the life as well as for those who had the courage to try it.

I liked the first volume of Laid Back Camp and the second one was also a good read. I can't say that I find the series spectacular but the stories are enjoyable slice of life pieces about teen girls camping. Our protagonists Rin and Nadeshiko start out this volume on separate camping trips and later, the two go on a trip together, in which they get involved with another camper and his hard drinking sister. As in the first volume, there are tips about equipment and technique. Laid Back Camp is a low-key but likeable series.

It's a lovely slice of life series about high schoolers camping in winter. Just like the first volume, there are useful tips and hints about camping sprinkled throughout, but the main attraction for most I presume is the relaxed pace of the story and the characters themselves. The art style is fairly unique and there's a couple of nice double-page illustrations in this volume too.

this manga does its thing omg

A great series - check out the anime DVD!

Great wholesome series where you learn some things about camping and Japan. My volume did come with a slightly bent corner but nothing to worry about.

Like this series, quick read and relaxing.

I loved the first volume of this manga, and this second volume is really just more of the same, in the best way possible. So here is my review of the first one:"This slice-of-life manga just tells the story of a group of teenage friends who enjoy going camping. They talk about camping equipment, camp sites, and camping techniques. And we see them going camping, and enjoying themselves. There's no high drama, no danger, no serious conflict. Nobody gets chased by bears or trapped in a snowstorm. It's gentle, it's adorable, and I love it."

Read the 2nd novel in Japanese already, but I like reading translations too. Haven’t picked this up, but the manga itself is amazing quality, the story is absolutely adorable and heartwarming, and I don’t think ANYONE would be disappointed in this purchase. I haven’t read this translation yet as I got it (on time) yesterday. I’ll binge this and New Game 2 today.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of February 2019: Some readers will be intrigued by apprentice dressmaker Ji Lin and her strongminded pursuit to achieve more with her life than her old-fashioned family will condone. Others will be hooked on the premise of a young houseboy named Ren trying to find the severed finger of his former master, who might or might not also be a weretiger. Still others will gravitate toward the mythologies, food, traditions, and culture of 1930s colonial Malaysia under British rule. Once Ji Lin comes in possession of the mummified finger that Ren seeks, they are destined to collide, even as a deadly tiger roams the edges of town. Whatever your entry point to The Night Tiger, Yangsze Choo will win you over with her newest historical novel, and you'll find yourself embracing everything she hurls onto the page, including a number of curveballs that contain the perfect amount of surprise. Too often historical novels can feel overstuffed or simply stuffy. The Night Tiger is supple and powerful, like the predator that stalks the shadows of Choo's ensnaring tale. --Adrian Liang, Amazon Book Review

#7,619 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book had me hooked by the end of the second short chapter, and apparently I don’t have much willpower, as I devoured the rest in a 24-hour period. The brisk pacing and mystery box format, with deftly handled multiple points of view, are addictive. The main protagonist, Ji Lin, is endearing, as is the houseboy Ren, and I found myself rooting for each through all the twists and turns of their adventures. This is easily my favorite of all the new books I’ve read in the past year. (And no, I did not receive a free advance copy—bought this for myself and am glad I did!)

Interesting plot, like able characters and I must have liked it because I want a sequel. Learning about other cultural beliefs threaded into a suspenseful story.

I read this in one sitting. It took me to another time and place, and I couldn't put it down. And when I reached the end, I had to go back and read it a second time--this time slowly, savoring all my favorite moments.I also read The Ghost Bride, and I enjoyed this one more.

Could not put it down. I swapped between the audio and the kindle and finished it in one go. Even better than the Ghost Bride. Yangsze has the native's grasp of her place, and the time could be from grandparent's tales. But the mystery had me going to the end! The romance was very realistically nuanced as well.

This was such an interesting story line and glimpse into Malaysian culture. This is definitely book club worthy - truly fascinating.

What kind of book is this? It is at once an adventure, a mystery, a romance, a coming of age piece, a cultural exploration, a spiritual drama, a quest. But, whatever you call it, The Night Tiger is just a really, really good story. The character development and scene development were fantastic. I felt as if I was in Malaya, watching real people. The plot was also unique; just when you think you know what will happen, you are wrong. But, what happens still makes sense. It is one of those books that I read quickly, because I wanted to find out what happened, but then I missed Ren and Ji Lin when it was over.

After reading the Ghost Bride I eagerly looked forward to Yangsee Choo’s next book. This book takes place in Malaysia in the 1930’s. The heroine, who works as a dance hostess, is given a mummified finger in a glass bottle. She needs to find the body it belongs to and bury it. Ms Choo is such a captivating writer that this works as a plot device. I read it in 2 days because I didn’t want to put it down.

I liked the story except that the heroine's oblivion to Shin's interest sometimes had me knocking my head against the wall. C'mon, really? But the story and the writing were wonderfully flavored with the Malayan culture, which was a big draw for me. Refreshing to not have to read a cookie-cutter plot with stilted characters. Highly recommend.
