This is another outstanding episode of the Violet Darger series. While the story would be enjoyable as a stand-alone novel, I think it's best if the stories are read in order. In this book, FBI Special Agent Violet Darger is still recovering from her injuries in her previous book, but she has been recently cleared to return to duty. At the request of her partner, Special Agent Victor Loshak, Darger cuts her vacation short in order to fly to Detroit to assist with what sounds like a routine homicide investigation. Once she gets there, she realizes that this is perhaps a bit more involved than originally thought. As usual, the story is fast-paced and engrossing, and I had a hard time putting it down. I don't want to give spoilers, but there's a bit of a cliff-hanger at the end that has me eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Brutal, raw, and deadly, “Bad Blood” paints a picture of a ghost city named Detroit, a terrorist-type evil of a younger generation of Mafia, and twisted justice. This book is hard-to-put-down, and I know it will stay with me awhile. Unfortunately this storyline seems very realistic.FBI Agent Violet Darger has spent the past six months trying to recover from a bullet to the head. She still has debilitating head aches she takes narcotics for. When she hears from her partner, Loshak, about an interesting case in Detroit, she convinces him to let her join him for a few days. Violet has a vacay planned with her lover, Owen. What is more important to her? Violet is not a team player! Investigating on her own could get someone killed. That part is annoying; it’s like the person in the movies hearing a noise in the basement and going to investigate alone. You know?Violet doesn’t always think clearly, but this storyline is exciting and entertaining. The ending is a total surprise!

Another Violet Darger novel in mah belly! This one is not the usual fare, though the level of craftsmanship still remains. Organized crime and a stone cold hitman join with an ex lover and crooked cops to bludgeon Violet with headaches from hell. She doesn't work as closely with her senior partner Loshack in this case as in the past, and I first thought that was a pity for the reader. The investigation is a different sort than before as well, which left me less breathless with excitement and anxiety. Initially I was ready to award this novel with less stars, for both of the facts I just stated, but...These are GOOD things, realistic things, and showcase the great diversity the authors are capable of. Darger need not be pidgeon holed into the role of David versus the Serial Killer Goliath each time she appears. The FBI performs other investigations too! There's kidnapping, drug related crime, trying to prevent a presidential candidate from being elected, organized crime, and much more! Loshack is a great character, but its unreasonable to believe he would be within arms length of Darger in every case. The hitman is a machine, but the authors manage to humanize him. Humanize him so well, in fact, that the reader is bereft of the movie cliche one dimensional killing machine that excuses everyone from passing judgement. This is a good thing, as we all contain elements of good and bad.In retrospect, this isn't the time chomping, anxiety filled Violet Darger novel we have come to know and love, but it's a great read, for all the differences. Plenty of twists and turns between the covers to keep you reading on, and a good deal of peril too!By the end of the book you'll be struck with all the anxiety you thought was missing, and then some! Now, I must head out to a Coney Island for some victuals!

This book is different. Darger and Loshak are working a case that leads them into a dangerous web of organized crime and corrupt law enforcement. I like the story and the character development in this book. I like how Violet has this new crisis of conscience to work through. So far the books have focused on the killers and our favorite FBI agents solving the crimes. But now Violet has to question the world around her in a totally new way. Great story, great character development. Oh yeah, and a seriously scary crime ring of brutal killers. And dirty cops. Can't wait to see what happens to Violet next and and how she grows from this experience.

A gripping thriller about the mob and features Violet Darger. Violet is one tough cookie and this story was very well written. I highly recommend this book. Tim and L.T. you did it again....I am still reeling!

Another violet Darger book and another amazing book by these two authors!! I simply love this series and the characters that these authors developed. The stories keep you on the edge of your seat and, personally, keep me up way past my bedtime!! Violet is such a complex character, one who places justice for the victims above all else. And in this book, you really see where he allegiance lies. I was not surprised by her decisions in this case and how strong her convictions are in finding those responsible and doing whatever it takes to bring them to justice. And then I got to the last page of the book. My jaw is still dropped. I do not want to give anything away but I sure hope Vargus and McBain are somewhere right now working on the next one. The suspense is killing me. Great book and thank you for the time spent enjoying it!

This is a sweet story about a gosling (children will learn that a gosling is a baby goose; parents can talk about the names for other baby birds and animals) who loves red boots. (Very tiny red boots since goslings are smaller than newborn babies.) Concepts like in and out, up and down, over and under, are covered by Gossie's adventures.Simple crisp drawings are on every page. I remember when my son was a baby and toddler that he was not enamored of the really modern artistic illustrations in some books I bought him as I was. I learned to stop buying those to read to him when he was young. This book keeps it simple. It will never been a classic like Green Eggs and Ham or Hop on Pop but it seems good to me. I do not have any grandchildren yet to try out the book on.

Repetitive, cute, and DUCKS! I work with infants and toddlers, one of my youngest toddlers was OBSESSED with ducks and this book made her oh-so-happy. It's not much of a story, but it's a quick read to tiny listeners and we get to practice associating some action words with pictures in the book. If you're an active reader, you can make this book really handy for teaching up/down, over/under, and inside and outside.Gossie is a gosling, a small yellow gosling whose book I read over and over again to my Snuggles. Every day.

My son does not seem to enjoy this book. We struggle to get through it everytime I try to read it to him. I keep thinking maybe he is still too young (he is currently 15 months) but I really am starting to think he is just bored by the story. Also its really hard to tell the two ducks in the book apart. Afterall they are both yellow ducks who look identical so perhaps thats an issue he has with the book. Maybe if the culpret that stole Gossie's boots was say a pig little ones would understand the story more....just a thought.

Lovely story, which I read to my daughter countless times. It works really well because the characters are clear, the plot has a perfect pace and arc, there's suspense (what happened to Gossie's boots?!) and a resolution (Gertie wore them!). It's also about friendship. Just a delightful book. Too bad that some of Dunrea's other books aren't as clear and sweet as this.

I love the Gossie series of books by Olivier Dunrea. This book is a simple, sweet tale of BFFs. I love that although Gossie seems to be the friend in charge to begin with that really both Gossie and Gertie have their own likes and dislikes and both love being with each other.

This is one of the best books for very young children (~2 years old) that I have ever read. It is a simple story with an important message about sharing that is beautifully presented and speaks directly to children in a manner they can understand.

Gossie (and the entire collection) have been favorites in our house for years. The stories never get old. Children enjoy the simplicity of the story and the repetitive nature of the words. As a bonus, now our emerging reader child can read this to the baby, which was an unexpected benefit. These stories are always given as baby shower gifts and are enjoyed for years.

Around 3 months ago, something clicked in my 18-month-old son's brain, and a book he'd ignored for six months - Gossie & Gertie - suddenly became his favorite. I think it has something to do with his obsession with "ducks" - even if those "ducks" are, technically, geese.Well, this one is his favorite of the Gossie books we have. I read this about a dozen times in a row today, and then five or six more times scattered through the day. It's bright and cheery and short enough to hold his interest, and the brilliant watercolor & ink drawings are eye-catching enough to hold mine! They are fun, quick, and very easy to look at - something I can't say for many of my son's other books.I recommend any of these books to parents of toddlers. They are fun, short, and simple. This goes double if your kid is strangely captivated by water-fowl.

From Booklist

Reviewed with Schraff's Marcus Garvey. Gr. 6-10. These two new titles in the African-American Biographies series offer straightforward introductions to their subjects. Mahalia Jackson follows the life of the renowned singer from her childhood in New Orleans to her success as a world-famous gospel singer who made the music popular through her unique style. A good deal of attention is given to Jackson's civil rights activism. Marcus Garvey profiles the controversial leader of the early twentieth century Pan-African movement. Schraff offers some interesting insight into Garvey's legacy and how his separatist views on race influenced the later civil rights movement. The writing is not especially engaging in either book, but these titles offer solid information about their respective subjects. Included in each book are a chronology, chapter notes, suggestions for further reading, and recommended Web sites. Ed SullivanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Everything had started very Spartan for Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972), in New Orleans: She had to scavenge coal from the railroad tracks or collect wood from the river bank after the early death of her mother for the family of her strict aunt Duke. New Orleans had many shade sides for Mahalia: She hated the rigorous racial segregation. And she hated "Mardi Gras": Using carnival rites, hiding their identities behind their masks criminals killed. (The son of her aunt died at such a "Mardi Gras" event.) She therefore used the chance 1927, aged 16, and accompanied another sister (Hannah) of her deceased mother to Chicago. Somebody named Louis Armstrong had made up his mind similarly at that time. She got in the north of the USA the opportunity to join a quartet - soon after her voice had jealously been classified as too striking in the church choir. At first she had a hard row to hoe with a minister, who did not like her hand clapping and did not tolerate her rhythmical body movements. He furiously recommended her the return to the south. She stayed in Chicago, succeeded with her style, but it still should last long until she could drive a lavender-colored Cadillac, could buy a seven-room house in a white neighborhood, guarded by police. At least she had success. She celebrated her annual appearances in the New York Carnegie Hall or in radio shows, was praised by Martin Luther King or sang for president Eisenhower (in the 1950s) or for the inaugural at of John F. Kennedy (in the 1960s). She sang for the civil rights March on Washington or met Indira Gandhi. When she appeared (for a recording session) on the occasion of a symposium of music professors in Lenox, Massachusetts, she afterwards was assigned to sleep in a converted stable. When she woke up in her horse stall early in the morning, she heard tape recordings of her own voice floating out of the splendid villa windows. She felt very angry. She would never forget this situation. And she never has forgotten her very beginning: In New Orleans she had heard the voice of Enrico Caruso out of the windows of white neighborhoods. And she listened to the voice of Bessie Smith, coming out of the windows in black neighborhoods. A mixture of it became her own unmistakable style. Moreover, her musical heart had been set on fire at the funeral rites in New Orleans - particularly at the happier pieces following the respective burial. The blues made her too sad, she said. She disapproved by the way, that the honor of a traditional, street party like New Orleans funeral never was granted to a woman. Therefore she wrote the song "Jesus met the woman at the well". In January 1972 Mahalia was treated to a traditional New Orleans funeral. She liked bands, playing slow dirges, following a coffin drawn by white horses...

This may have become one of my favorite reads of 2018! I loved the characters, although Elias was probably my least favorite and I can't really put my finger on why. I wasn't expecting this to have such a big mystery, but it was the perfect blend of a fantasy setting with a major mystery that needed to be solved. I absolutely could NOT put this book down and I had to know who it was that kidnapped the two young princes. I had my suspicions, but I didn't really know who it was until the big reveal! The only thing that I wish had been added was a more detailed version of the map that matched the one described in the book, since maps and mapmaking is such a huge part of this book.

This book was the absolute best mix of everything I love: fantasy, mystery, adventure, and a little romance. I really enjoyed watching the mystery unravel. Elias and Mercedes were very interesting and fun to watch. Great book!

A definite yes for Tamora Pierce fans! Unexpected and delightfully welcome! Lures you in and keeps you turning page after page...Or lying in bed thinking your way through, should you reluctantly need to put the book down for something as tedious as sleep...but when you're already up half the night, what's a few more pages??!So. Good.

I enjoyed the story, world, and characters. I found myself liking the least mentioned character the most.

Excellent read. I love the characters. I really hope that there will be more books coming.

My daughter (14 years old) and I both greatly enjoyed this book. Wonderful character development and fun adventures with mystery and intrigue. I hope there are more to come.

Very interesting and I like the culture and character the author created

I went into Isle of Blood and Stone not knowing exactly what to expect. The reviews I had seen had been slightly mixed; however, the synopsis still greatly intrigued me. I wanted to know more about Elias, the newly discovered maps, and the tragedy that happened 18 years ago.The result? Isle of Blood and Stone completely WOWED me! I LOVED this book! There's so much to like about the Isle of Blood and Stone, and one of the aspects I enjoyed the most was the world building. World building within fantasy can be a huge miss-or-hit, in my opinion. It can make-or-break a book; however, here it built the book up beautifully. I appreciated the level of detail Makiia gave to the kingdom of Del Mar. I enjoyed learning about the kingdom's history: its princes, its feuds, its fights, and its mapmakers. I also liked that Makiia didn't stop just there; instead, she gave offered a picture of the kingdom's surroundings- the different islands, the deadly forest, etc.Isle of Blood and Stone's plot mainly focusses on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the two princes and Lord Antonni. The prologue gives the first look into what happened the day, and it did a fantastic job of hooking me in. As the book continues, we're quickly thrown into a thrilling adventure, as Elias races to figure out the clues before it's too late. I thought everything contained just the perfect amount of suspense - enough to keep me interested and committed to the story but never feeling too overwhelmed or thinking that certain twists were thrown in for no real purpose but thrill. I also enjoyed that even at the end - when you thought everything large had been revealed - Makiia still had some tricks up her sleeve.Last but not least the characters! The majority of Isle of Blood and Stone is told through Elias's perspective, and I truly enjoyed seeing through his eyes. Elias is an interesting mixture between fearless and scared, brave and cautious. When the book first begins, Elias doesn't view himself as anything incredibly special. Sure, he inherited his father's mapmaking abilities, but he doesn't believe he comes close to being even a quarter of the hero his father was. This quality made Elias more human, in my opinion, and what I really appreciated was the fact that Elias didn't use this feeling to knock himself down; instead, it was more of a doubt, a feeing lurking in the distance. I think it's something that anyone can relate to - feeling as if they'll never live up to the person they're claimed to be "just like" - and Makiia truly captured this feeling perfectly here. I loved seeing Elias grow as the book progressed. He became such a kick-a$$ individual, saving the day more than once.I also liked seeing him evolve in his relationships. His friendship with Mercedes, for instance, was sweet yet spicy. I liked the bond between them, the-push-and-the-pull. Mercedes kept him on his toes that's for sure. Not to mention they were also great partners. Even though there wasn't many scenes with his family, it was easy to see what a loving, caring relationship was there as well. It was easy to see how much he valued his stepfather, his mother, and his siblings, which made the feelings he felt about finding his father even more complex. Was he willing to risk everything - his siblings' s standings, the status of his mother's marriage - for a man that may have been hiding all these years? It was a hard choice. Last but not least: Reyna, the real show stealer! Reyna, a young mapmaker-in-training, is courageous, poised yet bold. I loved seeing her assist Elias with the maps, and I loved the trouble she would get herself in. Nothing got in her way! I've heard the follow-up will be about her, and if that's true, I can't wait!Overall, Isle of Blood and Stone is a standout 2018 release! I can't suggest it highly enough to fans of YA fantasy, especially to those who love Kristin Cashore. It's the kind of book you can't help but read in one sitting. I wanted to spread it out over a few days - savor the plot, the characters, the setting - but I just couldn't, it was too hard.
