It is amazing that Janet Evanovich continues to get a little more creative when she writes, Explosive Eighteen is better than some of her previous novels. Stephanie Plum is more aggressive in this funny, no hilarious book! And Lula? Well, Lula is just good ol' Lula. Whamm again and again with her. She is in heat over a new guy that is not very law abiding. As for Vinnie, once again he is on the brink of disaster. The office is being rebuilt after a fire that began how? Their temporary office, a motor home, also some how goes up in flames. Stephanie keeps up with Morelli and Ranger. There are those that want Stephanie gone but why? What is this "photo" that suddenly appears In her purse and why? Read this fun filled book and you'll find out! Rated PG. Strong language. DP. Castro Valley, CA.

As usual, I really enjoyed the book. It was entertaining and amusing. It's always nice to know that when I need to read something that's not cerebral, Stephanie Plum is there.Ranger and Morelli finally come to blows. I knew it would happen eventually and who knows, maybe it will again. Grandma Mazur was uncharacteristically well behaved considering. Stephanie gets sucked into some cloak and dagger mystery on her way home from Hawaii. It gets her some stalkers and one crazy dude that wants to "kill her good". In this book, we find that when she feels threatened she can definitely put a hurtin' on someone. Go Steph!I still find it amusing that so many reviewers complain about the series being stagnant, but still continue to read. Nothing is going to change. If it does, I can only imagine the series will be over. I must admit, I would like to see Stephanie become a bit more adept (i.e. lock picking, gun handling). With that perpetual black cloud hanging over her head, her apprehensions and her life in general would still be hilarious.

I still enjoy this series, but I definitely don't jump on these quite as fast as I used to. After 18 books, there's little about them that's fresh or new. In fact, it's getting downright redundant. How many cars will get blown up? How will the latest skip elude her? How many donuts or buckets of chicken will she and Lulu go through? Who is she or Lulu going to shoot this time? How ridiculous is Lulu's latest outfit/diet/boyfriend? How many times will Ranger and/or Joe rescue her, and which one (or both) will she sleep with? Her mom is going to iron, cook, drink, and worry. Her dad is going to hide out in the living room or ignore everyone at dinner. And Grandma Mazur is going to do inappropriate things at funerals and just generally be shocking. Oh, and someone, or maybe multiple someones, are going to break in to her apartment. Connie will file her nails, Vinnie will be suspected of commiting heinous acts with farm animals, and Joyce will slither in and out as needed.Seriously. If you tell the same joke 18 times, don't be surprised if your audience just yawns.I used to gobble these up like candy, but lately I find they're not at the top of my list anymore. And yet they're still priced over the $9.99 benchmark... I think I'll start checking them out at the library instead of paying for them.

Like watching silly comedies, or movies, these books are meant to entertain . . . period! Of course these Stephanie Plum novels are written to a formula, and that is the whole point! I know what to expect and I know when to laugh. The characters are always who they are; from mom and her bottle and iron, to Rex and his soup can . . . we know who they are and what they do. . . . and we always get that sense of stability and familiarity that we long for in life from these books.My own life is full of stress and pain and though I love to read heavier, more thoughtful classics, I am attracted to stories like this for my emotional retreat. I will never have to get too attached to any of these characters (except for Rex) because they don't demand it! While reading these stories, I never have to solve the world's problems or feel guilty because I haven't done enough, in my lifetime, to clean up ALL the messes humankind has left behind . . . instead I can rejoice in glee every time Stephanie fails at a capture and marvel at Lula and her brand of wisdom or her latest "diet" . . . I can be secretly attracted to Ranger and adore the bizarre Grandma Mazur . . . and I always expect a spectacular vehicle explosion. There is always a bit of a mystery but not one that breaks my brain at the end of a hot day at work . . . I can read and go along with the flow of the story . . . and when the end comes all too soon, I am satisfied and ready for the next installment.I hope that Stephanie never makes a choice between one or the other of her guys . . . I think she should be free to be herself . . . never becoming like her mother . . . barefoot in the kitchen . . . eyeing the cupboard with the hidden bottle of whiskey, but remaining a character with hidden dreams of walking from one day to the next while maintaining a personal integrity of freedom.I appreciate this style of entertainment . . . simple and funny with no surprises . . . yet charged with a certain measure of hope that it will all work out in the end. . . because it always does.

The author also has some interesting philosophical and religious speculations, though he remains grounded in the scientific consensus of the day, for the most part. This relatively short and inexpensive book should become part of any scientifically literate person's background reading, IMHO.

In this review the focus is on Schrodinger's influence in bringing together physics and biology, which continues today. In effect he indirectly encourages such things as current genetics and neurology, which can be seen in the work of researchers like James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the double helix orientation of DNA, and also the cutting edge neurological work of Antonio Damasio and embodied cognitive science. As in Schrodinger, they inevitably end up in the next stage after physics and biology coalesce, which is to say, cultural and ethical territory. Any reader of What is Life? can see this coming. Schrodinger is still good reading today in diverse interdisciplinary fields. He was indeed a man far ahead of his time.

He goes to great length to look at the atoms and molecules of DNA and builds an argument statistically about them and how they build the genome,but it's hard for a lay person to understand. It seems like they violate the rules of chance but I'm not sure. It almost seems like he isn't sure either. I will have to go back and read it again because often my mind and eyes just glaze over.It's a hard read but worth it to get a physicists perspective on a deeply philosophical subject.Schrodinger's cat in Wikipedia is a good read about his mind.

Schrödinger's What is Life? Is a classic. In spite of the new advancements in genetics that supersede some of the notions addressed, this book remains fundamental to science and for anyone with an interest in biology, physics and chemistry.Published in 1944, nine years before the discovery of the structure of DNA, this book was written after a series of lectures given by Erwin Schrödinger. It is intended to the general reader, as it offers detailed explanation of the topics, however, it must be read carefully because of the complexity of the issues. Schrödinger answers the question of how can physics and chemistry explain the events that take place in living organisms. As a physicist's he is very humble, given that he is approaching a topic outside of his expertise area, however his insight is brilliant. He makes a theoretical prediction and based on sound arguments he proposes an "aperiodic crystal" that contains genetic information.This reprint edition is completed with a nice preface by physicist Roger Penrose, but the highlight is the accompanying text Mind and Matter, also by Schrödinger. This offers a great finale, with a philosophical discourse dealing with consciousness, free will and determinism.

This is another great work of Erwin Schrodinger which gives an insight into the biology of life from a physicist's perspective that inspired scientists like; Francis Crick who discovered the structure of DNA, J.B.S. Haldane, and Roger Penrose. It is clear from this work and other books of Schrodinger that he was one of the few physicists who deeply thought of the inner most secrets of life. This book is divided into two parts: What's Life (7 chapters) and Mind and Matter (6 chapters).The physicist's most dreaded weapon, the mathematical deduction can not be used for life because it is too complex to be accessible to equations. The orderliness required for the preservation of life does not come by the random heat motions of atoms and molecules, but statistical averages that provide order. Schrodinger asks a simple question; why is life made of so many atoms and not just a few. He offers three examples; higher magnetic fields, increase in molecular population and the error introduced into a reaction rate constant or any other physical parameter would be far too great if only few molecules are involved to form life. Hence orderliness, and of course evolution and diversity of life, requires very large population of molecules.The world is a construct of our sensations, perceptions, memories; all existing objectively and all scientific knowledge is based on sense of perception and nonetheless the scientific views of material processes formed in this way lack all sensual qualities and can not account for the latter. Theories that are developed from scientific observations of experiments never account for sensual qualities. The sentient, percipient and thinking ego does not figure anywhere in our world picture, because it is itself the world picture. It is identified with the whole and not part of it. The physical world lacks all the sensual qualities that go to make the subject of cognizance. It is colorless, soundless, and impalpable. The world is deprived of everything that makes sense in its in relation to the consciously contemplating, perceiving, and feeling the subject; no personal god can form part of world model that has only became accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. God is missing from spacetime picture like sense of perception or ones own personality. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that order changes to disorder but not disorder to order, and time travels in one direction from past to future, but not future to past. The statistical theory of time has a stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than theory of relativity. The latter presupposes unidirectional flow of time while statistical theory constructs from order of events.My body functions according to laws of nature, but I direct body motions. The word "I" means to state that I who control the motion of the atoms and molecules according to the Laws of Nature. The uncertainty principle and the lack of causal connection in nature introduce certain features into physical reality. I am so excited about the release of "Drop The Stones." Carlos Rodriquez is a wonderful storyteller and writer. His stories draw you in because they are vulnerable, authentic, and full of hope. I've known Carlos for 17 years and watching him travel the journey from being someone who has become so authentic in his journey of falling down and getting up, walking out of his insecurities and pride, and learning to love his family and all of those around him has been amazing to watch. But he's not just telling a story about how he's "perfected" how to love, he's also honest in where he still fails. It's inspiring for those of us who look into the dark nooks and crannies of our lives - the ones that we have shame about - our own insecurities and failings, hoping for the light to shine into those areas so we can also learn to love ourselves, our families, and others.

I don't really read books, let alone finish them. I completed this one within a week.And geeze. I cried. A lot.Three thoughts I had over and over while reading Drop the Stones.Is Jesus really this kind?Am I really this selfish?But He's still this kind?Carlos intelligently and humorously brings Jesus to the present age by applying what we already know of the Christ to our modern day "first world problems", shining a light on the self righteousness that I have always wanted to attribute to "them". If you're looking for a new lens to view the world through, I suggest starting here.I caution you though, this book may ruin your life- for the better.

One of the best books that have helped me to know Jesus. Carlos speaks though a humbled perspective that gives true insight on how we are to look at others. Once you begin reading you will not be able to put it down as it draws out your judgmental viewpoints and replaces it with mercy. I am a better Christ imitator because of the revelation that Carlos brings forward in this book.

Can’t possibly say enough good things about this book. I first heard Carlos at reunion 18… And bought his book. I have a very full plate but absolutely cannot put this book down!! Seriously!! Now that I’m on the last third I’m so bummed and trying to ration out chapters because I don’t want the book to end!So radical! So good!! Carlos super humble and vulnerable. If you’re not up for being challenged in the way love people… This book is not for you. But if you are interested in loving radically as Jesus did and does, grab copy and hold on😊

This is one of my favorite books of the past year. The conversational style keeps the book moving and I felt personally challenged by nearly every chapter. In a time where judgment rules the day, this is a must-read.

I've never written a review about a book until now. I have a collection of books and bibles filling multiple bookshelves and include the contemporary as well as the classics, but Drop the Stones has been impactful and resonated with me in a way that few have. I learned of this book because I also love the writings of Jonathan Martin and saw that he had written the forward for this book. And the title itself intrigued me. I love the honesty, authenticity and vulnerability of the writing by Carlos Rodriguez. You just have to check it out. This is truly a must read.

I had to resist offering a one-star, “repugnant” review.Tamler Sommers offers up a compelling defense of honor. I was struck most by the humility of such a controversial project. Sommers appears with pockets turned out and no strict definition of honor to give. However, he knows honor when he sees it and provides many examples thereof. He openly acknowledges its many downsides, tempers our expectations on its upsides, and presents how we may utilize it within the chaos of reality.All told, he does this very well. The examples are drawn from literature, film, history, myth, and his own life work to persuade the reader of honor's day-to-day value. I found my opinions challenged frequently during the course of the book. In addition, I learned a lot about the sociology and anthropology of honor cultures. Above all, I found the book to be an easy read and very entertaining throughout.On the other hand, I did not find myself persuaded that honor is, on balance, a force for good. The intuition I walked away with is that honor, vengeance, etc. just do not seem to scale. The best examples of honor Sommers offers are often in microcosms: sports teams, personal vengeance, and so on. The final chapters of the book, relating to restorative justice and containment of violence in larger honor cultures, work to show how values of honor could scale-out. I have no objections to the technical details he outlines, but just didn't put the book down feeling like these methods could fully overcome the obstacles that honor brings with it.

Tamler Sommers does a superb job of explaining the importance of honor cultures and outlining the values of maintaining them, whilst also giving a clear and precise criticism of the flaws and faults of honor. Why Honor Matters touches upon every aspect of honor that is widely understandable, from the traditions of sports values, to the brutal honor killings in extremist-religious societies. It must be stressed that Sommers does not in anyway defend atrocities, nor does he in anyway promote the abhorrently immoral acts of violence towards individuals or animals, but rather he emphasizes the values of what it means to stand up for and respect oneself, and to maintain a sense of respect towards the morals of the culture within ethically acceptable reason. One of Sommers' most difficult endeavors is perhaps the attempt to bring the idea of honor out of this barbaric and brutally-tribal stereotype. Sommers carefully suggests that honor can exist within culture and be a morally good and strong influence on the society, without the need for obscene acts of immorality. It is honorable, just and respectful to defend oneself, one's loved ones and one's moral standing, within reason. But it is not honorable, disrespectful to oneself and indeed morally wrong to subject another to violent immoral acts of injustice and outrage.Perhaps the most crippling issue of the book is the misunderstanding of what the author is trying to push. It is quick and easy to immediately jump to conclusions upon reading just a few excerpts here and there, but that would be discrediting the work any philosopher or author has done to study an ethical ideology. It is important to note that I quite frankly, do not agree with all of Sommers' views on honor, but to say that the author is misinformed or perhaps encouraging violence is just plain wrong. Why Honor Matters does a clear and thorough job of explaining nearly every accessible trait of what the modern world perceives as honor as well as emphasizing the importance of the good values that honor promotes, while asserting that the unethical acts of certain honor cultures must be stripped away and destroyed. All in all, while I restate that I don't agree on every point Sommers makes, this book was a delight, funny, accessible and eye-opening to read; while the idea of honor appears to be outdated, Tamler Sommers has successfully revitalized the subject with all its baggage and has given the topic a fair and critical assessment.

He makes the case for honor without overstating his case or ignoring inconvenient truths. He explains his position clearly and without unnecessary technical jargon, without dumbing down. Sommers gave me a lot to think about, and I am very glad I read his book.

I'm a decent ways into the book now. It's written well enough and clearly enough to be very readable. I like Tamler's take on honor, I like the ideas he brings that really are counter-intuative. The examples he uses do a really wonderful job of illustrating the points he's trying to make, while understanding and acknowledging the limits. I'll admit that I'm reading as a fan of VBW, but this book is honestly just as good, if not better than stuff by Pinker, Bloom, Haidt, etc. I'll be recommending it to friends just as soon as I finish it up.

I can honestly say I never thought I would be taking honor culture seriously. I didn’t think there were any upsides. But if we can harvest the benefits of implementing an honor structure, while taking advantage of the moral progress that’s been made to determine the content of that honor structure, I actually agree with the author that honor would probably solve a host of seemingly intractable problems. “Containment” is the biggest issue, in my mind. I’m still trying to convince my wife, but I had my mind changed because of this book. I don’t mean to keep repeating myself, it’s just weird to me that I’m now thinking about honor as a serious moral paradigm for the modern, western world.

Tamler is the rare philosopher who can write in a clear, accessible way without sacrificing depth or rigor. This book is a true pleasure to read, and raises significant challenges to the common sense Western liberal approach to a number of issues, most importantly criminal justice. Whether or not you wind up convinced by Tamler’s defense of the value of honor, the ideas and arguments presented in this book are timely, important, and worth engaging with (whether one is an academic with professional interest in these topics, or a layperson who simply wants to learn more about honor and justice). Highly recommended!
