I first heard of Fun Home when I read an article about how it was on the summer reading list for incoming freshman at Duke University and a group of students were boycotting it. They said it was pornographic and that its homosexual themes violated their Christian moral beliefs. Learning a group is trying to ban or boycott a book is one sure way to get me interested in reading it.Fun Home is Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir of her life growing up. Fun home is what she and her brothers called the family-owned funeral home her dad ran. This was the first adult graphic novel I’ve read. (And by adult, I mean for grown-ups, NOT porn.) I was really surprised how drawn into it I was. I didn’t realize that characters could be so defined in the graphic format. I really felt for Alison, having to grow up with such distant, detached parents. Her pain and confusion over her father’s death jumps off the page. The only way that Alison and her father relate to one another is through a mutual love of books and reading. Fun Home is peppered with literary references and comparisons that went completely over my head. Once again I’m pulling the “I was an accounting major so I didn’t read any classics in college card”. If you have, you may enjoy the references and Alison’s book will have even more meaning for you. However, I still liked this book a lot anyway. There were a few nude drawings in this book, when Alison figures out she’s a lesbian and starts having relationships with women. However, Alison is a talented illustrator and they looked like works of art in my opinion. If the scenes had been described using words, they would have been much more graphic. I am applying Justice Potter Stewart’s “I know it when I see it” test of obscenity and this ain’t it.As far as the homosexual themes in the book goes, yes this is a memoir written by a lesbian about her relationship with her gay dad. It’s a gay book. But isn’t one of the great things about reading learning about people who are different than you? Reading helps one develop a deep sense of empathy. Maybe you might even learn that people you once thought were evil are not. Maybe that’s a scary thought for some people and they would rather live in their insulated bubbles. I’m glad I’m not one of those people. However, I should thank the students at Duke for alerting me to this book’s existence.Put Fun Home on your list of challenged books that must be read!

I don't typically read graphic novels, not because I dislike the genre or haven't read some brilliant graphic novels in the past. My predisposition is toward novels and history/non-fiction. In the case of "Fun Home", I listen to the podcast "Books on the Nightstand" and this was one of their recommendations. I've had great experiences when reading one of their recommendations and hadn't read a graphic novel in several years so decided to change things up."Fun Home" is an entertaining and poignant autobiography of Bechdel's childhood. Her family owns a funeral home in a small town so her father works as an English teacher, her mother an actress. They buy a charming fixer-upper which her father lovingly devotes much of his spare time to restoring to grandeur often enlisting Alison for assistance. Much more, this is Alison's story of growing up as she starts to realize she is a lesbian, her coming out as well as learning that her father was a "closeted" gay man. Her father dies after being hit by a car and Alison wonders whether this was an accident or suicide, unable to fully express himself and his true sexual orientation. It is also about the unspoken bonds between Alison and her dad after she tells her parents she is gay --- she can never quite come to ask him about his sexual orientation and he never directly broaches the subject with her before his death. The illustrations only serve to enhance the development of the Alison and her family and deepen the emotional engagement with their struggles. There are moments of sadness, but more moments of joy and discovery to be found in this exceptional autobiography.

This is a graphic novel. I am not habituated to the format, and in a few I have read in the past have had difficulty balancing my attention between the words and pictures. Here, that was not the case. Bechdel balances serious and often detached out-of-panel sentences with engaging drawings and dialogue. The panels contribute a different element, not always illustrating what is written above or below them, creating a dynamic dual-tone. As I, with my limited exposure, understand, it is unusual to write deep reflective analysis to tell the story around the panels which show the story. The novel is a testament to her father, and she leaves no part of him, or her own emotions about each part of their relationship, unexplored. She presents him in his entirety: the good, the bad, the disturbing, the endearing. Through reading it I could feel her love of him, and because of this sympathy I found myself not wanting to remember his baser acts. One scene expresses her frustration at the dishonest portrayal of people at funerals, where people feel that only good can be spoken about the person. She would rather have a brutally honest representation to show all her father’s flaws and all the love he received anyway. This is what this book is.The characters are all very real. I was able to get a full idea of the father, and all the secondary characters acted believably. Of course, it is an autobiography. More than that, all of them are portrayed through compelling details, and every scene shown feels significant. The story is not told chronologically, rather it jumps between scenes relevant to each chapter’s theme. This allows every idea to be explored entirely when it is first introduced, rather than hoping it will stay in the mind of the reader until it is addressed again. Together, they paint a rich, full picture. As the story nears its end, many moments resurface, each for a single panel, drawing everything together. This pattern builds to a climax until the final scene, which is one continuous and simple moment. I had been expecting some grand finale, and the solitary scene was not quite enough. I did not feel the significance the author was trying to attribute to it. This stood out more because I had not felt that the rest of the book fell short, and the ending must, by placement, be particularly meaningful. The balance of text and image, good and bad, was masterfully executed. My only complaint is that the ending panels did not live up to the resonance of the rest of the book. I rate this book 8/10.

Review

"Revealing...this compassionate and informative study is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of work." —Publishers Weekly“Ghost Work adeptly raises the alarm about an emerging type of dehumanizing work, where invisible workers serve as cogs in the great machine of our latest information technology, entirely beholden to software and artificial intelligence.”—Martin Ford, bestselling author of Rise of the Robots and Architects of Intelligence “An uncompromising, data-based, yet heartfelt exploration of how digital technologies have allowed corporations to write human beings even further out of the value equation, as well as how we can restore dignity and prosperity to the lives of the invisible workforce. The first step in building solidarity is simply knowing there are people out there.” —Douglas Rushkoff, author of Team Human and Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus. "Ghost Work is a stunning book, just the wake-up call we need to shatter the credulous belief that artificial intelligence is ‘replacing' workers. As Gray and Suri masterfully demonstrate, work isn’t disappearing in the age of AI; it is being hidden. Scrupulously researched and deeply humane, Ghost Work is at once a sobering reminder of what could happen if we allow algorithmic cruelty and exploitative labor practices to flourish and an inspiring call to defend the dignity and value of human labor." –Virginia Eubanks, author of Automating Inequality "The Wachowskis got it wrong. Humans aren't batteries for The Matrix, we are computer chips. In this fascinating book, Mary Gray and Siddharth Suri show us just how integral human online task workers are to the development of AI and the seamless operation of all the great internet services. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand our technology-infused future." —Tim O'Reilly, CEO, O'Reilly Media “A remarkable book. As one of the millions of hidden workers of the world, I know this book gets to the heart of what it means to be a ghost worker. It reveals the true reality of work life for the people earning a living as digital pieceworkers. The authors also propose several technical and social fixes to collaboratively build a better future for everyone working in the shadows.” —Rochelle LaPlante, digital labor rights activist   “Ghost Work is groundbreaking, a painstaking portrait of an invisible world. We can only choose a different future of work if we truly see today’s workers." —Felicia Wong, President and CEO, Roosevelt Institute, Author, The Hidden Rules of Race: Barriers to an Inclusive Economy "If you think you know what's going on with digital labor, think again. This pathbreaking book is sure to re-set the debate about technology and the future of work. Based on extensive ethnography and survey research, Ghost Work is a must-read for anyone who cares about a humane future for those of us who need to work for a living. A game-changer." —Juliet B. Schor, Professor of Sociology, Boston College   “Mary Gray and Siddharth Suri show us the  human face to ‘ghost work’ -- the invisible and often alienating piece work that makes today's digital economy run. The people working today for Mechanical Turk and similar platforms are the canaries in the coal mine, revealing how more and more of us will be working in the years to come." —Henry Jenkins, Provost's Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Art, and Education, University of Southern California "Ghost Work's mosaic of personal narratives is a welcome bulwark against oversimplification of a phenomenon that is, by design, easy to overlook. The debate around a complex and troubling labor market comes to life through the stories of its most vulnerable participants.” — Jonathan Zittrain, George Bemis Professor of International Law at Harvard Law School, Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and Faculty Director of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society   “Peering into a future that is now, Ghost Work is a must-read exposé of the new world of work on the global, digital assembly line—hidden, creative, human labor upon which we are all dependent and without which there would be no effective artificial intelligence.” —Alisse Waterston, Presidential Scholar and Professor, John Jay College of the City University of New York, and past-President, American Anthropological Association  “Ghost Work portrays a world in which invisible armies of online workers are hired, tasked, managed, paid, and often fired by machines. This setting would make for gripping dystopian science fiction — were it not describing the present! This book convinces me that greater transparency and regulatory oversight will be crucial for ensuring that the future of work 'works' well for platform workers, not just for the platforms that oversee them.” —David Autor, Ford Professor of Economics, MIT “AI’s dirty secret is just how much human labor lurks inside apparently automated systems. The emergence of this informal work is one of the most significant transformations in labor in decades.  Yet, as Mary Gray and Siddharth Suri show in this important book, it is firmly rooted in a century-long struggle for labor protections.  Ghost Work offers not just a detailed diagnosis of current conditions but also a path towards a better future.” —Paul Dourish, Chancellor's Professor, Informatics Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California, Irvine “Ghost Work should be read by every CEO whose company depends on online, on-demand workers and by every citizen concerned about the influence of artificial intelligence on the nature of work. It elegantly places this technology in historical context and, crucially, gets the technology right. Moreover, Gray and Suri’s creative suggestions for redesigning socio-technical systems would vastly improve the well-being of the humans who sustain them.” —Barbara J. Grosz, Higgins Professor of Natural Sciences in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University “Ghost Work brings out of the shadows many of the “last-mile” human activities that are typically left out of the story about technology’s impact on work. The authors clearly lay out the critical policy and business challenges ahead, as well as some creative solutions, as this form of work continues to grow.” —James Manyika, Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company and Chairperson and Director of the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), MGI’s business and economics research arm “This book reminds us that it's not just the 'future of work' but the present of work for millions of workers. It’s essential that we see and understand the nature of ghost work.” —Natalie Foster, Co-chair and co-founder, Economic Security Project and Senior Fellow at The Aspen Institute Future of Work Initiative “In this important and original book, Gray and Suri give us a fascinating peek under the hood of the gig economy that is rigorous yet very readable.”—Arun Sundararajan, professor of business, New York University, author of The Sharing Economy “Ghost Work is an instant classic. It is resonant of the great ethnographies that illuminated the manufacturing shop floor. But industries of the past relied on a lively community of people who worked, played, and lived together. The workers on the new digital assembly line are known neither to each other or to us. Their invisibility makes them ghosts. Gray and Suri enable us to see them, empathize with them, and recognize our own complicity in their situation. By emphasizing how even AI depends on human labor and by offering a rich account of the lives who provide that labor, the authors offer hope through a well-grounded tool kit of strategies for amelioration and action.” —Margaret Levi, professor of Political Science, Stanford University “Ghost Work is a haunting look at the stories of the people who live far from Silicon Valley whose work makes the Internet possible. With this extraordinary research, Gray and Suri combine rich interview data with the scope and scale of big data. They paint a sweeping, yet fine-grained picture of our technological moment, while helping us to imagine a different and more just future.” —Gina Neff, University of Oxford, author of Venture Labor

The Night Sky comes in two sizes: Large (8 inch diameter) and Small (5 inch diameter). The large size is best for learning the constellations. The small size is best as a pocket reference to tell you what constellations are up if you are already reasonably familiar with the constellations. In each size the charts are available for different latitude zones. Size is a plus if your eyes are good or excellent - read on. You need to know your latitude to make sure you order the correct map and a red flashlight. I googled my City's Latitude for the correct map 30° - 40°. This is for North Latitude, so if you're south of the Equator, it will not work.I'm not totally new to stargazing -- but couldn't find the old ones my son had. Was undecided which stargazing map better so also purchased, Guide to the Stars map, has a bolder print. See the pic. The benefits to this is that it does not take up much room and can be hung on the wall. Magnifying lenses may be needed for the fine print if your eyes are less than good. Map, made of cardstock, is inside a clear plastic holder/hanger and features a turn dial, I liked. This map holder is around 9in X 10.5in. Map diameter itself is about 7 inches - the white football shape portion of night sky. The circular white part contains the month, day and time you will align for the correct view. The shaded area on map is Milky Way. A downside is the South view is on the back side so you will have to flip.Map has instructions and hints along with objects for Binoculars on the facing South (back). Also legend for Star clusters, Nebulas, Galaxy. My map came in a box with other things. It would be a bummer if you only ordered map and was stuffed in a small mailbox. Being bent will ruin the map for sure. I ordered with Red LED flashlight and Guide to the Stars, it all came in one box. Later ordered Eyeskey waterproof compass.Enjoy whatever you buy, it will give you endless fun trying to navigate the stars. Live long and prosper...

This planisphere is easy to read despite it being fairly compact, which is a an advantage out in the field. I don't use the flip side much, but you might if your southern horizon is free of houses and trees. After trying several planispheres, my advice is to get one like this. It has dark dots & print against a white background, which is much easier to read! White dots & print against a black background just don't make it!One complaint: it includes constellation "stick figures", which don't help star identification, since the "stick figures" don't appear in the sky. But most planispheres include this so-called feature. Also, it only labels the top 20 or so brightest stars. Even in my city location I can see the 48th brightest star in the sky. Drop the "stick figures" and add more star names! But you probably can't do better than this planisphere. Combine it with Dominic Ford's In-The-Sky Online Interactive Planetarium, and you're set!

I love that this pamphlet is big as my head. the word are so easy to see. it's plastic, so I'm not too worried about it getting damage in a damp area. Bonus, I love that it arrived days earlier before it suppose too.

Awesome reference material for star gazing, easy to use and understand. Make sure to use a red LED flashlight or red film cover over a regular flashlight so you can read it in the low light. Also, bring you reading glasses to see the small print, there is a LOT of info on this compact wheel.See link below; Get one of these low costs Red LED flashlights to help keep your adjusted night vision in tact.WAYLLSHINE® Zoomable Scalable CREE LED 3 Mode 200 Lumen 150 Yard Long Range Red Light Flashlight Red Hunting Light Tactical Flashlight Red Light Torch For Fishing Hunting & Detector

There's a lot of information packed into a very small package - I've a long way to go before I've absorbed all of it. However, it's very useful and I'm using it to understand and recognize the constellations. Highly recommended for beginning amateur astronomers.

I can't stop playing with this! Not only is it great for tracking stars in the night sky, but I can't help rotating the disc in the daylight hours either... just to see what's going on when the sun is out. This is a fun learning tool!

This is the best planishere that you can buy. Mr Chandler has been putting out an excellent product for many years. They are the right color combo to be seen under dim red light. Also, the way he does the horizon (on the flip side) is pure genius. Forget the other planispheres -- if you want to learn the sky, get the Chandler!

These are great tools. What I wish I had known was how to order one for the latitude for where I will be using it. North latitude to me means Alaska! Where I live. Apparently, 30 or 40 is north! I should have read more closely I guess. I bought this to use at home and we are at 60 degrees. Perhaps some guidance or a chart where you can look and see what latitude you should buy to match the latitude in which you want to use it. We ended up buying one from a museum in Hawaii but would have liked to have one before we went. NOW that I know, I will be an informed buyer.

This is another one of her books, and it is nicely written, easy to read and follow. It goes on to talk about the many different "levels" of creation, but I don't like how some of the terms used in the book are describing things. Like for example, one of the levels is the lower level , where gnomes, faeries, and trolls live, and I didn't like how she called it lower than us, it would just be a different dimension or plane of existence. Anyways, it is a good book.

Most of us probably won't be able to verify if Sylvia Browne's cosmology is correct until we leave our bodies permanently. The research of near-death experiences by physicians Raymond Moody, Melvin Morse (of children) and Elisabeth Kubler Ross provide evidence of survival of the consciousness after clinical death of the body. (The alternate hypothesis that the oxygen-deprived brain provides stimulation does not explain how medically untrained adults and even children can describe in detail resuscitation procedure, even to the point of repeating what specific individuals at the scene said.) However, one could say that the people who come back to their bodies and the Earth with these fascinating stories of what they saw and learned are merely tourists. The descriptions of life after life from Browne and psychic mediums George Anderson, James Van Praagh, Allison DuBois, John Edwards, and others focus on what we can call permanent residents. And the recent book by Depak Chopra, Life After Death: Burden of Proof, provides another physician's view of the non-temporal and the eternal with an Eastern perspective that is complex, but intriguing. There is a growing body of evidence that indicates that all these writings should be studied carefully. I highly recommend all of Browne's books for being accessible. They make a good introduction to the more arcane Chopra.

I enjoyed reading about different realms and beings from these realms. It's more geared towards spiritual practitioners and metaphysicians. It might be a bit too 'out there' if you are new to spirituality. You might want to start with something more simple like 'The Other Side and Back' by the same author.

Sylvia just keeps them coming and after each book I am hungry for more! She has a way of explaining life in a way that connects with my soul, it all just feels so right. This book was a one that I have to read again to get everything out of it but I relish reading it again and again. Sylvias books are NEVER a disappointment! All of her books have filled some kind of void inside me and keep me coming back for more!

I WAS SKEPTICAL ON ANYTHING CONCERNING THE PARANORMAL AND IAM NOT EASILY PERSUADED. WITH THAT SAID I HAVE PURCHASED 3 OF SYLVIA'S BOOKS AND IAM HOOKED.I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT GIVES A VERY GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE AND WHY WE STRUGGLE WITH CERTAIN ELEMENTS IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE.IT DOES NOT HURT TO OPEN YOUR MIND TO THINGS THAT MAY SEEM UNREAL.I HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS BOOK AND HER OTHER BOOKS HOW TO COPE WITH DIFFICULT SITUATIONS BETTER.LIKE SYLVIA SAYS IF WE ONLY HAVE GOOD TIMES WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THAT AND HOW DO WE ADVANCE SPIRITUALLY IF WE DONT HAVE HARD TIMES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.OF COURSE WE HAVE SKEPTICS AND THATS FINE TO BE SKEPTICAL BUT BEING CYNICAL IS SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.SKEPTICISM SHOULD NEVER TURN INTO HATE BECAUSE YOU ARE IGNORANT TO OR DONT UNDERSTAND THE BELIEFS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THATS SOMETHING WE AS PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN. SYLVIA NEVER TRIES TO FORCE ANYONE TO BELIEVE WHAT SHE SAYS. SHE SIMPLY SAYS LET THIS LEAD YOU TO YOUR OWN TRUTH. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK !

This book has a lot of sense about as well as the other books written by Sylvia Browne.Good read.

I recommend all of Sylvia Browne’s book. But this one if you’ve had questions about Creation, heaven and hell that the King James Bible just leaves me with lots of questions

I love Sylvia's books. There are a lot of interesting facts that I've tried to find out more details. I was recommended this book to people who looking answers on their questions.

This is a must read for any scholar or practitioner of public health. By far the best book that has articulated the history of how our social service infrastructure was bifurcated from healthcare and relegated to an underfunded and discretionary industry. Meanwhile, healthcare became dominant via a powerful medical lobby that thrived on an entitlement program for the middle class with substantial inefficiency and minimal accountability for improved health and community well-being. The book makes a great case that our ability to improve health is not simply through the traditional approaches of managed care, tort reform, and insurance regulations; rather, it's through a concerted effort to invest in social supports to enhance social determinants

This thought provoking and paradigm-shifting book is a must read for anyone interested in the American healthcare system. Bradley and Taylor have hit on an idea that is clear, simple and obvious (so much so that readers may be embarrassed for not having discovered the idea first). The “American Healthcare Paradox” of why America spends comparatively so much on healthcare yet receives so little is unraveled when social spending is considered: America comparatively spends an average amount on the sum of medical and social spending and therefore has middling results. Incorporating a more holistic view of expenditure on the broader determinants of health solves the paradox. Some may find the book frustrating because it aims to shift the focus of the discussion, rather than provide quick and easy answers. This is precisely the value of the book. Our current situation is complicated, and the overall underperformance cannot be improved easily or quickly. A successful approach to the problem requires a shift in the public discussion and a collective acknowledgement of our shared burden in causing this issue. Bradley and Taylor include an apolitical and helpful history of how the American system developed into its current form. While I find myself more towards the individualistic (vs. community orientation) side of the spectrum than Bradley and Taylor, their arguments have caused me to currently question and challenge my own assumptions. No matter your current views, this book is likely to have a similar effect on all readers.

Insightful reasoning into the US health care disaster. Illustrates the need for increased social services to mitigate medicalization. If include social services in the definition of health care the US and other developed countries spend the same but the US as poorer results.

So far it's a fantastic description of the healthcare system and the theories behind the US falling behind. Offers insight for why the US is falling behind, and offers solutions for where to focus out efforts as a nation and in the public health fields.

Good book, presented a superficial analysis of America’s healthcare spending problem with very idealistic solutions that often don’t work outside of a single payer system. Didn’t address social structures of oppression. However did give a good history of the evolution of insurance companies in US.

This book takes no shortcuts, and directly addresses the heart of an enormous issue in contemporary America. The American Health Care Paradox analyzes the wide range of graphs and statistics, as well as past strategies and interventions, that evidence America's commitment to creating a healthy population. However, when presented with the evident subpar health outcomes, Bradley and Taylor do not--unlike most others--insist that we throw more money at the issue. Instead, the authors dig deeper to discover the earliest roots of negative health outcomes, and specifically discusses how we can adjust our spending to better solve the problems we are faced with. Using research from countless other countries--especially Scandinavian ones, which consistently produce some of the best healthcare outcomes--Dr. Bradley and Ms. Taylor present convincing evidence that we can improve healthcare outcomes by (paradoxically) shifting spending away from health services, and instead towards sectors that function as highly efficient interventions: employment and housing programs; disability, sickness, and unemployment benefits; family and housing support; pensions, and perhaps most importantly, education. This book teaches the critical message that with a problem as complex as healthcare, there will be no easy solutions or shortcuts. We need to take a step back to acknowledge and address the societal factors that burden our healthcare system, because they are at the heart of our stunted healthcare outcomes.

Bradley does a masterful job of highlighting that low spending in social services in the US is one of the reasons that we have high spending on health care. She clearly lays out how the US social services and medical systems have evolved side by side with little interaction. However, if we look at health, a comprehensive model is George Engel's biopsychosocial model, and Bradley gets the bio and the social but forgets the psychological, the behavioral aspects of health. Indeed in one of her case examples she highlights a man who was quite wealthy who then makes a number of impulsive rash decisions and winds up uninsured and in poverty with a family member who has a chronic illness. Mental health services may have helped this individual before he bottomed out. We know that behavior accounts for at least half of the variance in health. Bradley does not address this at all in her book. From her point of view if all families had their basic needs met they would be much healthier, and she is right to a point. But there are still families who would be even healthier if they worked with a skilled mental health professional to address behaviors that are detrimental to health.

One of the best ways to prepare is answering questions. Your explanations for the right and wrong answers definitely add to the learning process for a better understanding of academic knowledge along with how to answer the questions on the test. In addition, the wide range of questions is important for this exam because it has medical and psychiatric questions as well. Your guidebook has the most up to date information with including the DSM-V guidelines.

i really liked how some of the questions are general knowledge to get the basic down before they get complicated. I also like reading the rationale, which helps to elaborate why other answer are not correct.

I heard from a classmate of mine, who has already taken boards, that the Mometrix practice questions most closely resembled the PMHNP board exam. I'm thrilled to have them as study aid. Hundreds of great questions with detailed rationales to learn from.

I just have not been happy with the many review books and DVDs that I purchased so far and I was beginning to get concerned. Your book is right on with your questions. My only regret is that I did not get this book sooner. Thank you for a a well thought out, comprehensive, quality product. I will tell all Psych NP students to get this book.

The questions are intuitive and an excellent study program for psychiatric nursing theory, psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy for NP practice. I have a wide interest in Psych Nursing while currently practicing as an Adult Primary Care NP and reviewing the Mometrix Practice Questions to prepare for the post-master's PMHNP program. Thank you for this great resource!

Great material. Easy to follow and great practice tools. I use it to review , which helps me to prepare better for the tests from school.

Great questions , however I thought that the author would arrange the questions according to the different psychiatric disorders. I hate the lay out but it is a must have .

I liked the questions format. It is quite informative. I highly recommend including this preparatory material as it is challenging but relevant.

Maximum Insight: Selected Columns by Bill Maxwell

From Publishers Weekly

In this compendium, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times syndicated columnist Maxwell offers his perspective on the environment, education, politics, migrant workers and his life as an African-American. This is journalistic writing at its best. Each piece features spare, direct sentences illuminating fragments of individual lives that convey the beauties, frustrations, failures and complexities of living in modern America. Maxwell is most compelling when writing about what his readers likely are not poor, black, migrant workers or homeless. He excels in conveying an understanding of these experiences, and creating empathy for his subjects. In one column, he captures the sense of liberation reading offers to a poor young girl living with her grandmother in a Florida town labeled "the AIDS capital of the world." In another, he describes a painful incident in a restaurant during which he and his white companion were subjected to humiliating racism, an experience that left him in tears. Maxwell forcefully addresses the intractable problem of race relations. His approach is provocative and exhibits a hard-edged intellectual rigor that is pragmatic, rational and constructive, and never doctrinaire: he believes it is counterproductive to mark one's race as "victim," so is against seeking general reparations for slavery. But he favors affirmative action because he sees the opportunities for African-Americans and whites as unequal. Maxwell is a generous writer. Many of his columns are poignant, many hopeful, others funny, and he does not hesitate to share his anger or his vulnerabilities when it is important to his point. Maxwell's world is well worth exploring. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Maxwell, a syndicated columnist with the St. Petersburg Times, who calls himself a "social critic," offers his perspective on a broad range of issues from crime to politics to the environment. But American race relations is a central theme of this selected collection of his columns. Maxwell recalls his own childhood, adolescence, and formative experiences, including witnessing the emergence of the civil rights movement from the vantage point of a small Florida town. He brings personal perspective to the issues of personal responsibility, revealing his own son's struggles with drug addiction and self-destructive behavior and his eventual recovery. He is as critical of Jesse Jackson as he is of Clarence Thomas and takes on a range of public figures on issues of affirmative action, civil responsibility, religious intolerance, and racial justice. Readers interested in general public affairs with an emphasis on race relations will enjoy this broad social commentary. Vanessa BushCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
