I bought this for my parents and we read it out loud on the drive down to L.A."Hints for getting along with your family: Remember these people are not real and you are not related to them."We kept quoting the book the entire visit with my folks, easing the pain of family time. This book is hilarious. Everyone from your nerdy 12 year old nephew to your grandparents will get a laugh.

Half of understanding what to talk about is getting your mind working on the unexpected. People want to be surprised. And this book will help you do that. Or just put it on your coffee table and read passages outloud and discuss. Sadly, nothing is going to do the work of actually starting a conversation with someone new or uncomfortable, but this book helps remind you that it's about making yourself feel comfortable in your skin by knowing that you're a weirdo like everyone else. I love this book.

Humorous attempt at getting introverts to know what to talk about. They had a bit on how to tip delivery people. Pretty funny! I've encountered a few service people since reading it and think, "You should get an extra $1 since you smiled. And another $1 for being efficient..." My family of introverts read it out-loud and enjoyed it. I think it will help some of us!

Not quite as good as I'd hoped. Maybe it's just me but I didn't get a lot of use for it, especially for business. Maybe better suited for personal settings.

Gives some facetious suggestions but also makes some good points about what people are looking to talk about. Definitely gives you fodder & ideas for what to talk about; however, some of the suggestions aren't really practical for dinner discussion as they're just so out there people might think you're weird.

This is a funny book, laugh out loud in parts. If you are a fan of the "Anchorman" type of humor, you'd get a lot of kicks out of this book. But I bought it because of the title, and as a title promise, it falls short for me. It does have some great party liners and you may even get lucky with a few of the lines. As a how to book though, it can be frustrating. Recommended, but for entertainment purposes only.

If you are prone to silliness, then this book -might- be helpful for you. Personally, I find the advice to cold start a conversation hilarious, but it is too flippant in a lot of areas. I'm hard pressed to imagine a wallflower interjecting commentary on who they would sleep with in the room for $375,000. Not really worth the price I paid, and I got the Kindle version.

I really enjoyed this book. It is an easy, quick and fun read. I did not give it 5 stars, because I was expecting a little more actual information. On the other hand, I laughed far more than I would have expected. Very funny.

This book is good for the average fashion buying public, easy to read and not too technical.****(impact on me)I for one is guilty of falling for fast fashion.I've noticed for some years now that the clothing items got less expensive compare to 30 years ago when I started buying after I got my first job.I've also noticed the fabric quality and worksmanship are going south judging from items i bought 10 years ago and today.I've also noticed the cavalier attitude I've developed because the price tag (no guilt if it was $5, $10, $15, or $20).I am guilty of having a walk-in full of clothes, shoes, handbags, and accessories (jewelry, scarves, gloves, hats, tights, socks, belts...).For days I've been thinking about the alternatives: buying a lot less and buying quality. My paychecks can only allow me one option; either I buy multiple inexpensive (price wise) items or I buy a few pricey items every 3 months.One good thing to know from this book is that the small scale designers who manufacture items in USA are not charging so much $ because they are greedy. The cost of bringing out those pieces domestically is enough to justify the asking (plus they have to eat, too).2nd good thing is that I feel slightly better that I only shop at TJMaxx and Urban Outfitters. I don't shop Forever21, H&M, Walmart, Kmart, Target, Gap, Zara (once every 3 years), Old Navy (once every 5 years), Ross, Marshalls, Macy's, Express, JCrew/Madewell, Nordstrom Rack. In a very small way I feel comforted by patronizing just 2 stores (smaller carbon foot print perhaps).3rd good thing: I don't buy multiples in dif. colors just because an item is inexpensive.*** RESOLUTION:I am going to ponder and analyze more about my shopping habit. At my age (almost 50), maybe it is time to zero in on quality and less is more than to have a bursting closet.Too many choices is not a good thing at all. Things don't get used and loved because there are too many.

Reading this book helped me make sense of why most of today's clothes seem cheap and poorly made. They ARE! This book takes you behind the scenes into the world of fashion, garment making and marketing, but don't get turned off if you are not a fashionista! This is a book every consumer should read, whether you are a twenty-something collecting your own pay check for the first time, a working Mom with kids to clothe, or a senior on a tight budget. It is a shocker. We the consumers are responsible for the decline. Why? Because we want current fashion at a cheap price, and merchandisers have figured out how to give it to us. But if you are a savvy shopper who heads to a thrift shop or consignment shop to buy better quality at equally low prices, beware! As cheap clothes flood the market, more and more are finding their way into second hand stores. Soon quality clothes will go the way of clunky TV and computer monitors and dial-up telephones. And it's not all about "Made in China." The book is an easy read, but packed with information. The author appears to have done her homework. I gave it four stars because I think it's an important book -- didn't give it five because it xould have used some tighter editing. For the record, I seldom give 5 stars!

For most of my life, I've followed my mother's advice and paid a bit more for high-quality, timeless clothes. However, over the past few years I have been sucked into cheap fast-fashion and added a few knock-offs to my closet that often don't make it past the second washing. Ms. Cline raises the curtain on the ugly fast-fashion industry and reminds us to be more thoughtful when purchasing clothes and accessories. She inspires us to be more thoughtful in our purchases and to be cognizant of whose hands are creating the pieces we put on our backs.I am now back to my old-fashioned (much more honorable) habit of consistently inspecting seams and hems for proper construction and looking for the "made in..." label. If we refuse to buy items created in sweatshops, our actions could lead to better working conditions throughout the world.

OverdressedLast month I read Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion by Elizabeth L. Cline and it changed my life. It was eye opening. It was truly shocking. It made a huge impact. It was life changing. I just didn’t realize the ramifications of fast fashion. I’m a casual gal – cotton twill slacks in a couple colors, jeans, a few knit tops and sweaters, and I’m set. I used to love to shop at Kohl’s. It’s inexpensive and if it’s not on sale this week, it’ll be on sale next week. And, just like the book stated, items were reasonable enough that I could and would buy a few colors of each style I liked. And do it again next season. And next… So where do all the clothes go when everyone throws them out to get new styles next month / season? That’s what got me. That and never being happy with the fit and quality of workmanship. When you sew, you know how things should be put together. Furthermore, I don’t wish to be a willing participant in providing extremely poor working conditions for those working in garment factories. So I chose to make a difference in my world. I chose to be a more conscientious consumer. I chose to return to making my own clothes.

This comment is not about the book content itself, but the lack of transparency in the marketing to inform the buyers that there are several versions of the book:The complete book has 4 parts:Part 1: Astronomy and the Universe (chapters 1-5)Part 2: Our Planetary System (chapters 6-15)Part 3: Stars and Stellar Evolution (chapters 16-22)Part 4: Galaxies and Cosmology (chapters 23-28)The version I got includes only parts 1, 3, and 4. Volume 1 supposed to include chapters 1-16 and 28.The hardcover version of the book doesn't say volume 1 or 2, so it may include all chapters. I don't have that book, so I can only infer from its "Product details" that it has 800+ pages, whereas my book has only 500+ pages.I don't know the reason behind this arrangement. I can only guess it may be based on good intention that some courses may only require the content of volume 2 or 1, in that case the students can just buy one volume, not the whole book, saving them a lot of money, considering the pricing for college textbooks is astronomical these days.This is all fine. What's annoying is that the publisher has not bothered to put such a simple description in a place where people usually to find about the book structure, such as on back cover, in preface, etc. Only at the end of the detailed table of contents, in a format like a footnote, it says that all the wonderful contents in the list are not all in this book (vol 2), and chapters 6-15 "appear in Volume 1: The Solar System."As a book lover, had I known this information, I would have gone to order the hardcover book (hopefully it's the complete version with all chapters "appearing"), rather than the book I ordered that has a middle section disappeared into another volume.In fact, Amazon could have remedied the information gap by providing the description in the Product details, rather than copy-and-paste the promotional materials there.

I did not purchase this for a class, but as a new backyard stargazer that wanted to learn about astronomy in a little more depth than is provided in books like "Nightwatch". It is a textbook, obviously. However, I have found it to be a very accessible and enjoyable read with many fantastic illustrations to reinforce the concepts that it presents. Bear in mind that this is not a coffee table book, but a serious text of 750+ pages written to present, not just Astronomy, but the scientific method and observational evidence-based thinking to a collegiate audience of non-science majors. I am finding it to be a comprehensive treatment of astronomy, our solar system and the cosmos at large without being overwhelming. Astronomy Today will be a very rewarding read for those willing to put the time into it.

I purchased this text for our daughter, who is taking an introductory astronomy class. I never had the chance to take such a class myself but always had an interest in astronomy, so I started reading some of the chapters. To my great satisfaction, it was actually very well written, concise, and seemed to be up to date on the some of the more interesting and current issues in astronomy- dark matter/energy, inflationary universes, black holes, etc. It has an excellent explanation of black body radiation and how the emission profile of a celestial object gives can disclose both its temperature and much about its composition. It also takes care to show exactly what portion of the light specturm is used to generate each image (of which there are many beautiful ones included), which really helps understand why optical telescopes can't solve all the scientific mysteries (the center of the Milky Way can't even be seen in the visual spectrum due to dust). It also used a minimal amount of math, which takes away nothng from the points made. As a parent tired of forking over hundreds of dollars for textbooks that unnecessarily change edition every year (how is that possible, I ask?), I did not mind paying for this one.Kudos to the authors for a very readable and useful text. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about astronomy but never had the opportunity. The only material that I thought might be improved was the section covering the H-R diagrams of star evolution- it would help to have a simple diagram of a typical star as it progresses through the main sequence and beyond, gaining or losing mass. the luminosity and temperature portions of the process are well described, but it's a bit hard to put it all together. Is the H-R diagram really the most useful way to understand star evolution? Regardless, this book rates as an outstanding science textbook in my opinion.

This is the first and only astronomy textbook I have ever read. I was hooked to the content right away. The book is so interesting that I now understand why so many people loves astronomy. Definitely worthy reading and own the book!

This is the first astronomy text that I have read. I found it to be excellent. The illustrasions are very well chosen & complement the text well. The style of writing is pleasant. I preffered it to the novel that I was also reading! It is light on math but there is so much for a novice to learn that was probably best. Each chapter is around 20 pages which for an easy 1 day read.

Lovely and beautifully designed text with plenty of diagrams and simple explanations for many cosmic events!

It was a very good book to read for my course. It is very much to the point and nowhere near as confusing as I thought it would be.
