This is my 3rd (i think) purchase of this book. I love doing flowers and this one has also wonderful containers. I would be better as a creative haven book with one side only but I still love this beautiful and inexpensive book. Highly recommend if you love using colored pencils as your medium. Great for the person who loves to color or even a gardener who loves flowers. Its fun to do it over and use different colors for the same picture.

My husband had a relapse of brain cancer. Originally he had it in his 20's. It went into remission for 27 years and then came back with a vengeance. He is an engineer and has developed problems communicating which can be frustrating for both of us. An activity we can do together is to color these beautiful flower arrangements with colored pencils.These arrangements are gorgeous. And any color he chooses for the picture is perfect. We take turns putting a little color in the picture. He loves the intricacies of the arrangement yet it is easy enough to follow to color if we take it one item at a time.This coloring book is a real life saver/therapeutic item in my arsenal to help my husband stay engaged in this world.

Wonderful book. The designs are such that they aren't full of tiny little spaces to color. Many have larger areas which make it more relaxing to color. A real nice selection of pictures too. Great price as well! Well worth buying. No bleed over either from 1 page to another.I love this book, the pictures are going to really be beautiful when finished. Floral Bouquets has 30 pictures to color with 4 colored ones to give you ideas. This book is going to be so good to do up and then gift to someone who loves flowers but can't have any due to allergies. They get to see the beauty in them. You can even gift the book and some colored pencils so they can do them themselves. They will have something to treasure for years to come.I must sound like a broken record but make sure to have something under your picture if it isn't removable so you won't leave imprints on the picture under it or color markings from the one already done.

I bought this as a gift for my recently widowed mother in law. I thought she might enjoy coloring, but didn't want to give her one of those super-detailed, fancy, complicated books right out of the gate. I chose this one because the patterns were pretty - who doesn't like flowers - as well as fairly simple. Enough to keep an adult engaged without being intimidating. She reports that she has loved using it, and finds that it is a nice welcome distraction to sit down to when she needs a breather. I packed this up with a simple box of crayola colored pencils, and while it wasn't super fancy, or expensive, it has helped her to de-stress and she has mentioned that she has really enjoyed the coloring more than she thought she would. After this one maybe she will want to try something a bit more ambitious. I love that she has been able to get enjoyment out of it. I would purchase this again!

This was the first book I got. So much fun and learning! No joke! Took me out of the nursing home and into "hmmm, what about doing this one?" And I was gone for hours! Took me away from some of the pain (physical), the loneliness, the boredom. The brain got exercised. Other people enjoyed my efforts.

Terrific. I highly recommend this for stress relief. I used markers and framed some of them. If you use markers make a copy of the back if you want to color it as the markers come through. Wish this had only one picture per page.

I did not notice the double sided pages, when ordered it.. I would not have purchased it. I won't use it due to that reason. I did try one page of it today, and the paper buckled to the other side even from just gel pens. And they are the Gelly rolls, so that was a bad sign. If you don't mind the two sided pictures, than it does have some pretty pictures, But if you don't like double printed pages this is not for you. Hope this helps! :)

First, it took a month to arrive. It showed as "in stock" and then I kept getting these messages that they were trying to find a delivery date, or some such nonsense. Ordered on July 19th, and arrives on August 18th. When it finally arrived it looked like the UPS delivery guy had been sitting on it for a couple days. It was completely bent and the bubble envelope was filthy and all torn up. I know I only paid $3.99 for it, but I order a lot of stuff from Amazon, a LOT. So, because it took so long I decided to flatten it under a heavy book, which worked OK. The drawings are nice but both sides of the paper is drawn on. I wouldn't have ordered it at all if I had read that in a review. So, now, I have to put paper inside each page as I color, so instead of them using twice the paper and it not being a waste, I am wasting the paper because it has to stay in there. And, I can never frame all of them. I have some Creative Haven books, my first was "Fanciful Faces", which I love. I also got some Lotus Designs and and Mendhi Designs, which are nice and one sided. But I like to color something that is something. Not just a design, if you know what I mean. Whimsical Gardens by Creative Haven is another one I like with a lot of tiny flowers and petals to color. I have to say my Creative Haven books are the best. would not recommend this.

Subhash Kak is a distinguished Vedic scholar and academic who has written extensively on Vedic topics and issues. His publications are always interesting, if not sometimes controversial, because he has the courage to think outside the box when interpreting the Vedas or other Vedic subjects. Kak’s interpretations and writings are almost always taken from the standpoint of modern scientific theory and observation, and so indicates the subtitle of this new translation and commentary of the Yoga Sutras. Thus, Prof. Kak’s translation and commentary of the Yoga Sutras is a highly anticipated and is a welcome addition to the numerous commentaries on the Yoga Sutras.Kak’s interpretation is somewhat of a disappointment. The subtitle of the book is that the sutras are interpreted from the standpoint of modern science. While there is certainly elements of science in his interpretation and commentary, there appears not enough to support the representation of the subtitle. Roughly one half of the book consists of a lengthy introduction of the six dharsanas, or schools of Vedic thought. Kak intersperses scientific topics in that introduction. It is, otherwise, a good introduction for the readers not familiar with Indian philosophy. But again not enough to be strictly from a scientific approach. If anything, the emphasis of the treatment is more psychological rather than “scientific.”In the same manner, the interpretation of the sutras are more or less conventional, again, with intermittent references to science, but not enough to be “scientific.” In what should have been the most interesting portion of the sutras from a scientific point of view — the siddhis, or supranatural powers obtained through the austerities of concentration and meditation — is given remarkable short shrift. It is there in the greatest connection between science and the sutras occur. Kak makes a brief referenced of this connection. Through samyana, which is the combined fusing of the processes of dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, Kak notes in 3.20 that the adherent “takes control over material processes.” While Kak mentions in several portions of the book that these extraordinary processes are easily abused, the siddhis, at least to me, from a scientific approach, should lie at the heart of ultimate liberation.Having said all that, though, the quality of Kak’s translation of the sutras is outstanding. Of all the translations I have encountered, Kak’s translation is the most intelligible and accessible to the modern reader. The translations are clear, and not, as in so many other translations, either antiquated or overly idiosyncratic. The translations certainly correspond more closely to the scientific approach Kak is attempting to make in this translation. Based on the quality of Kak’s translation alone, this Yoga Sutra justifies five stars and is highly recommended.

I love it.

This is an excellent translation and commentary on the Yog Sutra from a learned scholar who easily spans both the Vedic tradition as well as modern computer and other sciences. Translating a book of the singular importance of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra (or Bhagvad Gita for that matter) is a monumental milestone, and one that cannot be undertaken casually. It signifies a coming together of a deep and holistic wisdom in the life of the author him/herself. I congratulate Dr. Kak, a dear friend, on writing an excellent translation and commentary. The translations of the verses are short, to-the-point, and informative. The commentary preceding the translations brings together a holistic assemblage of various points of view on life, through Dr. Kak’s unique and well-honed sense of the Vedic and modern life. I highly recommend this book which can be read in one sitting, or can be a reference resource for a long time. This book will resonate especially with those who follow the path of gyan or knowledge or intellect. If the reader is more into the transcendental or other traditions, there are a select few other nice translations and commentaries on Yoga Sutra. I have been reading several commentaries on Yoga Sutra lately, and find each one very fascinating and enlightening in terms of the author’s own wisdom and tradition.

This was a treasure for me, but not only for the read itself but also because of the author and the story behind the read.Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) was a prolific writer of plays, short stories, essays, poems and 75 novels during the Victorian era in England. Her mother and father separated when she was five, her brother left for India and then Australia (where he became prime minister of Tasmania) when she was ten. She herself worked for three years as an actress to support her mother and herself before her writing career took off.Her life story fascinates me, especially since we're talking about a time of more repression of women than we have today. She seems to have been the kind of woman who decides to live her life her way, not the way society dictated. In 1860 she meets John Maxwell, a publisher of periodicals who is married with five children, but whose wife is in an asylum in Ireland. They live together and have six children, until marrying in 1874, when his wife died.Braddon wrote but also edited a literary magazine and founded another one. Such a busy woman, especially considering there were 11 children in the Braddon-Maxwell household. (I seem to be crushing on her, but, really, she must have been an amazing woman.) Her first novel was published in 1860 and her last in 1908. What a career.Well, I guess none of this is to the point of posting a review of this particular book. This is her most successful and most popular sensation novel and was published in 1862. The interesting thing about this mystery is that it was inspired by a real crime during the Victorian era. (If you're interested in reading about the real-life crime, try Kate Summerscale's book, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective, a non-fiction account.)The plot of this has a lovely, lively young woman coming to a small village to serve as governess in a household. She catches the eye of an older, wealthy, widowed baronet and they marry. The baronet's daughter's nose is put out of joint by this, and she and her new stepmother aren't, to say the least, the best of friends.What seems to be a separate story also begins at the same time. A young married man with a baby, who had set off for Australia to make his fortune there, arrives back in England after a few years to discover that his wife has died. He is devastated by this and is supported by an old school chum he accidentally meets up with. Said school chum is the nephew of the wealthy baronet. Now the story takes off. Lots of secrets to be revealed. Mesalliances, possible murder, attempted murders, psychological studies of characters, investigations into lives by the nephew turned P.I. There's even a bit of romance here.I enjoyed the first half of this book tremendously but it seemed to slow down and become more verbose, flowery and repetitive in the second half. That's to be expected, I suppose, during this age of sensation novels, but Braddon did such a stellar job in the beginning section that the second half disappointed somewhat. Still worth the read, for certain, if only for the historical aspects.

It starts off kind of slow. It takes a while to really describe the place where things start. But it's the most important place in the book, where most of the significant things happen, so keep going. It picks up in a bit. You can see what's going on, or what is going to happen, before any of the characters realize it and it makes you wonder if it's going to be like that the whole book. It isn't. There are twists and surprises and many things you didn't see coming.This was written in the 1800s and has that old style feel to the writing. This Victorian potboiler reminded me a lot of Wilkie Collins, but is not as expertly drawn. The plot relies heavily on unlikely coincidences, and the conclusion is drawn together like the ending of a happy-ending fairy tale. Nevertheless, it was a good summer read and I enjoyed it.

An interesting mystery written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon in 1862. I thought it was very thought out except that in order to end happily, it went a little too long.The book is about the marriage and secret of a young blonde woman to an old, rich widower. Meanwhile, the widower's nephew reacquaints himself with an old friend who, upon returning from Australia, tells the nephew the story of how he married a young woman, was disowned by his father, and in desperation to support his wife and their baby, leaves them to seek his fortune three years earlier. Unfortunately, he soon discovers that his wife has 'died.' Thinking there is nothing for him, he makes his friend, Robert Audley, the guardian of his child and would have left to return to Australia, except for the renewed friendship. They travel to Audley's uncles home but soon afterward, George Talboys disappears. Most of the book surrounds Audley's efforts to find out what happened to Talboys.

An excellent choice of reading, if you enjoy: words creating exquisitely depicted scenes, Conversations with meaning, an excellent plot with twists and turns quite unexpected, and surprisingly good ending.I highly recommend

The author makes no bones of her contempt for women yet writes splendidly. A fun mystery that I could not guess though the ending was a bit sappy. Such it is with VicLit.

At first, the tale starts out rather boring, yet soon becomes quickly fascinating. Lady Audley's Secret is irresistible and hard to put down. The ending has a great moral and what a twist! Extraordinary novel!

If you like charming novels from the 19th century, you will really enjoy this book. Read the first few pages, and if they grab you, the whole book well I must admit a terrific escape from this world into another one.

Cynic that I am, with a finely-tuned Inner Critic always on high alert, it is often difficult to relax and read a book for pure pleasure, falling into the story, walking beside the characters, feeling their sun on my arms, their cold rain on my shoulders, and their emotions reaching deep and catching hold. When it happens, though, I treasure the experience, and for days, sometimes weeks afterward, I regret my return to the less-than-magical, the more mundane, and too frequently, the patently awful, books on offer.A glowing review by a friend whose opinion I generally respect enticed me to try this book, one which is really not the type I would select. But I was interested in the North Carolina setting and the premise of a “wild child” living alone in the marshes. So off I went, nose in my Kindle.I read the book in two days, reading late into the night, snatching time during the day between work and chores. Actually, the chores fell by the wayside, except for feeding my puppies. I was mesmerized, enchanted, wrung out, appalled, energized, and amazed. I dislike that last, overused word, but sometimes it’s the one that works. And when I finished, I knew this was a book I’d read again, several times, and would not easily forget.What made it so special to me? First, the writing: effortless, flowing, lyrical, and clear. I absorbed it without stumbling, without mentally substituting a better word, or revising sentence structure. Nope. It was perfect for the tale being told.Second, Kya: a child of wonder, pain, abuse, abandonment, determination, beauty, the sort more from within than without, and a resourcefulness most of us cannot imagine. Kya’s no cliché, no feral child just waiting to be rescued and rehabbed by well-meaning but clumsy individuals. She transcends those stereotypes by leaps and bounds, and when she chooses to interact with others, she does so on her own terms. I also found the transformation, subtle and something easily missed if you’re not paying attention, of Kya’s speech patterns as she grew up, losing the backwoods twang and limited vocabulary of her crazy and largely uneducated father, for an almost academic style resulting from the stacks and stacks of books she devoured.Third, the setting: marshes that are hardly the monochromatic sweeps of green and blue so favored by weekend painters to the tourist trade; lagoons swarming with color and critters; birds far more numerous and varied than the ubiquitous seagulls; fireflies [although North Carolina folks call them lightnin’ bugs] flickering on and off with their special mating codes above the marsh; mud that isn’t yucky but the habitat of insects and worms; and the ocean, the largest body of all, rolling on past the undulating marsh grasses, the switchback creeks, placid lagoons, and sugar-soft strips of sand. You can see all this, feel it in the blistering heat of summer and the chill moist fog of autumn and winter, smell the briny sharpness and the unmistakable tang of marsh mud at low tide, and hear the calls of all the birds, the waves rustling and then crashing, the wind making dead grass clatter. And what about taste? Well, there are all those grits, seeming years of grits…As always, other folks have provided the obligatory precis of the story, so go read those. I’ll simply say that the plot is not trite, it’s not one you could predict, or want to, I suspect. Neither are the characters in addition to Kya, even though one or two wear the clothes of a cliché until they morph into something else.Now here is the true evidence of this book’s power for me: I found some jarring elements, me, the reader who demands absolute historical, social, and geographical accuracy, and I just didn’t care. But here goes.The crawdads of the title are freshwater creatures, so they would not be denizens of Kya’s briny/saltwater marshes. No one in North Carolina would call them anything but crawfish; growing up in Raleigh, I played with crawfish in creeks and streams. Crawdad is a name used by folks west of the Appalachians. However, crawdads do indeed sing, according to Woody Guthrie.People who live along the coast in North Carolina small towns would never go shopping can’t in Asheville. True, you could drive from Manteo on the Outer Banks to Murphy in the state’s western tip using US Highway 64 the entire way, but it would have taken some 12 hours in the. Thus the references to Asheville as a destination for shopping struck a wrong note. So did having Kya’s meeting with her publisher in Greenville. People flying in from Big Cities Up North would have landed in Raleigh or Charlotte. Greenville didn’t have an airport in the late 1960s/early 1970s.Finally, I can’t find but one, possibly two, spots along the Atlantic coastline where Kya’s marsh sanctuary could have been located, given the detailed descriptions of boating through creeks and lagoons to the ocean. That did make me wonder if the author used her imagination without the assistance of a few topographical maps.But you know what? These minor quibbles aren’t worth a star, or even the point of a star to me, who is from NC, or to anyone else. Such is the beauty and power of this story.

I was very disappointed in this book after reading all the hype about it. While the reading is good, the story is so nonsensical- a 6 year old left alone in a shack raises herself, living in the same shack, using the same boat, and no one lifts a hand to help her? In more than 20 years, the boat never breaks down, the house doesn't need repairs and she's able to wear the same clothes for many years....she's got long hair that she says is ratty and tangled but description s of it has it down her back, luxurious...she's gorgeous but bathing is optional until in her 20s...she has sex with a philanderer but never gets a vd and not once apparently does she get sick. No flu, cold, nothing....she never got shots and apparently has the immune system of a super hero because she stepped on a nail and never got tetanus....I kept reading so I'd finish and the ending is unexpected but it's generally a boring book where day after day, she's alone in the marsh....

This is one of the most moving, caring, emotional novels I have ever read. I read this book only because I had met Delia and have read her wildlife books she wrote with husband Mark Owens. After starting the book this was all I could think about for days. Kya's life become part of mine and the characters ceased to live on the page... they were alive with me and I was in the marsh, feeling every feather - the air, creatures and the plants. Jumpin' became a trusted friend and so many moments touched my very soul. I should not have been surprised as Delia has a great style in her wildlife books that I love to read. But a novel like this is not my normal read. Maybe I need to now reconsider what I choose as this book stopped me cold and made me rethink a lot that happened in my life. Delia touched the human soul with her behavioral descriptions. She is not only a respected wildlife scientist, she is a human behaviorist and understands more about the human condition that just about anyone else I know. This is a tremendous treasure of a book and I'm sure it's staying in my read again list for a long time. Highly recommend the book.

I am extremely stingy with my compliments for good books, but this tale is well-deserving of the praise. Of the last dozen or so books I've read, only two others earned five complete stars by me: She Read to Us in the Late Afternoons: A Life in Novels by Kathleen Hill, and Circe by Madeline Miller.I have to confess that I have also had magical moments with marsh creatures such as herons, eagles, and mud turtles. Like the main character, Kya, I am a compulsive collector of treasures from those Great Rock Tumblers: the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean which makes this book so attractive to me. However, Delia Owens' writing is more than just about the natural world. She spins a good and very well-written tale about murder, courtroom drama, nature, poetry, and even love.Another reviewer described Owens' writing as lyrical. It is. Take your time and savor every sentence.

Wow! I just finished reading Where the Crawdads Sing. And I will say it again, Wow! This books is so filled with emotion. Kya, the main character, is trying to survive by herself from a young age. She has been abandoned by those who should teach her, guide her, protect her. She has to fend for herself. Two men come into her life and teach her about the good and bad in life. I only keep few book's that I know I will read again. This is staying in my library.
