Love this book!! As usual Jo Connell, the author, has produced another beautiful and exciting book. There are very few books on this subject and I highly recommend this one. It is very up to date and provides knowledge not found elsewhere. Ceramics Handbooks are ,by and large, always good, and this is no exception. I am so glad I found it. Even if you never actually color your clay you will be glad you read it. I suggest buying it even if you have many books on pottery . It is a source of inspiration and new ideas for any potter and serves as an excellent reference tool.

An excellent book to get you started on colouring clay. Mixing stains and oxides in clay, percentages and some basic techniques.Gives info you dont get from the polymer books.

I bought the book either for school or as a reference. Its good. I can't believe they require a minimum amount of words. Crazy. They want an opinion and then ask for so many words. What are they nuts!

I recommend Jo Connell's Coloring Clay to anyone who currently works with or is considering working with colored clay. It is an excellent survey of techniques and approaches utilized in this often overlooked area of ceramics. Following a brief review of historical uses of colored clay, such as Egyptian paste beads, encaustic tiles, and Wedgwood wares, Ms. Connell discusses how clay is colored, then provides images of vessels and sculptures from a number of contemporary studio artists (primarily British and American and at least one Australian). The images are usually accompanied by brief descriptions of processes the artists use, but don't expect "how-to" details. And to her further credit, Ms. Connell emphasizes testing and safety information. There are a few shortcomings, particularly for beginners to the field. Although she presents starting percentages for additions of several mineral oxides and carbonates (such as cobalt, iron, copper), she omits this valuable insight for commercial stains (for example, 4%-5% for most blues and greens). And she doesn't refer to specific commercial stains available in the U.S. (e.g. Mason, Cerdec, Blue Heron), although she does offer a short list of ceramic suppliers that sell these stains once you know what you want. While she refers in a short paragraph to the Japanese techniques of nerikomi and neriage, I wish she would have included images and process descriptions for some of the outstanding works by Japanese ceramists. I also would have liked more discussion on millefiore blocks and patterns. Still, Ms. Connell introduced me to interesting and novel approaches and has inspired me to explore some new directions for my own work.

I really like this book. I have used some of the techniques on my pottery. Really adds another dimension to clay.

A quick read, but not much in-depth information. Although it is a little on the light side, this would be good auxiliary information and pictures to Jane Waller's Colour in Clay.

Wow this short story packs a punch….full of action, intrigue, brutality and revenge counterbalanced by humour, a tender love story and hot raw sex…Drake is the archetypal alpha mafia boss, he is powerful, violent and ruthless but also so caring, possessive and protective of the woman he loves…Trinity is his soulmate.…she has had a traumatic past but remains sweet, strong and ‘resilient’….I particularly loved her thought processes as she attempts to navigate her way through the complexities of the mafia hierarchy and protocol…This is a short story with a full length novel begging to get out…I think it is such a shame that this wonderful set of characters and in particular this couple did not get a longer time in the limelight….I felt that there was so much more backstory to be divulged as well as more detailed plot development…This is an unputdownable exciting and compelling romantic read…..

3.5 starsOn the Rocks is the second book I have read by Nikki Belaire. I really like her writing, it sucks me in immediately. I loved Drake's possessiveness and how protective he was of Trinity. I thought Trinity was insecure and weak in the beginning but she definitely proved she isn't. Now the issues I did have and I'm not sure if this is the author's pattern but I feel like we get a partial story. The book just starts in a scene and we get some background by flashbacks and like the first book this one has a kidnapping but no satisfied punishment of the kidnapper especially for a dangerous mafia man. Also while I liked the amnesia situation because Trinity didn't need to live with what was done to her, I find it hard to believe that within a week a rape kit would be inconclusive. I'm no expert but wouldn't there be some kind of trauma to that area. Anyway even with some minor issue I like this author and I plan to read more.

Drake & Trinity come REAL close to taking my top spot of favorite Nikki Belaire couples.....sorry Nick & Shae (Wine & Whiskey). This is billed as a novella but it seemed like a full length novel. A bit dark & suspenseful at times but the love between Drake & Trinity was absolutely beautiful. Drake worshipped his bride with an intensity that just bled through the pages. The reader just FEELS it. He would do anything & kill anyone for Trinity. Drake just wants to protect her, shield her from his world....but he fails. Hey, I already told you it was suspenseful. Great story, definitely going into my re-read category.

Who doesn’t love a man who loves his wife so much he will do anything to keep her happy! Trinity is a beautiful young woman who had a rough upbringing. Always feeling like no one wanted her until Drake comes along and sweeps her off her feet. He vows to protect her always. Until one day, that vow is broken. Does Trinity come back to him? The chemistry between these characters is thru the roof. I could feel the love between them so vividly. So many emotions that I had to read this book in one sitting! I truly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it!

I have mixed emotions about this book. I felt like I was dropped into the middle of a story. I even went back to see if I had missed the first book or something. Because of that, I had a difficult time connecting with the story. I enjoyed the love that was obvious between them, but I couldn't understand where it came from without the missing part of the story. It was an enjoyable book, but it could have been a much better book if we weren't floundering around trying to connect the pieces that weren't there.

I love this author, she always has a way with her characters and captures your attention with each alpha male and female that can keep up with the possessive and intensity brought into the relationships. I love Trinity and Drake, with the protection and caring Drake shows Trinity after the life she's led and the hard time she has trusting, she falls for Drake and all he is. Sexy and steamy doesn't even cover the relationship between these two. If you want a sexy quick novella this is for you.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a true love story between two people. Drake who finds a broken woman, Trinity, and makes her his wife. He showers her with love and affection, cares for her in so many ways. And Trinity who can not believe that things are for real. She grew up in foster homes and did not have the love and attention from anyone to feel the love. This was such a good story and I would recommend it to anyone who believes in love and happily ever after.

I really enjoyed this one. Short fast paced read sure to get your heart pumping.I too wish it had been longer. More details added; more back story etc. Also, I would like to see a some of the 'resolution' instead of just being told 'bad guy taken care of' and, who got the 10mil?but still an enjoyable hour long book. no cliffy and no typos etc.

Beautiful book about girl coming in terms with her heritage. It teaches good values and respect to one's culture. It shines a light on values and priorities, as well as on what good friendships are like. I bought this book for my niece, but promptly got another copy for my son who read it in one sitting. It allowed us to have great conversation about his heritage, languages, relationships with his friends, relationships with his family, and it also inspired us to get further educated on Vietnam -- the history, political situation, and the country today. We also ended up getting another book from Thanhha Lai.

I chose to give this book 5 stars chiefly because of its beauty - beauty of thought, beauty of imagery, beautiful expression of the beauty of the human being. Me. Lai has an obvious talent, and I'm so disappointed that, after reading Upside Down and Back Again, and now Listen, Slowly (both in the last three days; but they are both books for young readers, after all), I have read everything she has written. Regardless of the age range they were aimed at, these stories pack a major emotional impact, with the thrown-in bonus of Ms. Lai's amazing descriptive talents opening up a country, a culture, and a people like a door. The reader who perhaps grew up hearing stories of the lives of their parents and grandparents before, during, and after the Fall of Saigon will have these accounts fleshed out in technicolor. The reader who has little or no knowledge of Vietnam, will find themselves stepping through thedoor into a place of unexpected beauty and grace.

Love a book where the teen character experiences growth in maturity. As with C. Kadohata books, the young woman is able to love and respect her grandmother and rise above being embarrassed by cultural differences that may affect how her friends see her. I think the descriptions in Viet Nam are so well written that I feel I could smell the markets and the stagnant ponds! Very interesting characters throughout and loved the friendship between Mei and Ut. This would be a great book for teachers to read aloud--grades 6 and up. Perfect for a multicultural read, also.

I admit I got a little bogged down with pubescent angst at times but the ending is so worth the slog. The last chapter will be read again until I feel i have gleaned all I can from it. Loved it.

Love this story...at times, heart wringing, once Mia/Mai matures and begins to look beyond herself. Other times, quite hilarious...especially Chap.23 ...anyone who has tried to learn Vietnamese would appreciate. I had 1st read Inside Out and Back Again - The poetry format was surprisingly fitting and very touching. So well crafted. Motivated me to read Listen, Slowly. I will watch for works from Thanhha Lai.

I enjoyed 80% of the book. I learned so much about Vietnamese culture. I loved most of the characters except the main character. It was hard for me to relate to her two dimensional Valley Girl persona. I understood why he author characterized her that way but it was just hard for me to connect to her. I would still recommend this book to middle grade kids because their is a lot to gain from reading about a culture you never, ever see in books. Thank you for that experience.

I couldn't put this book down. The story and the words pulled me in. The author writes beautifully and captures the emotions and thoughts of a twelve year old girl perfectly.

I'm a big fan of the Deep Dark Fears series so of course I had to get this book. And thankfully it didn't disappoint!Unlike the first installment, there's more original content and content you can't find on the Tumblr. Needless to say, I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this to others who love horror comics.

Very good. Krause's lovely art and light sense of morbid humor paired with slightly longer, more mysterious and somber stories make for an amazing combination. Sometimes when I have friends over to my place, and I'm showing them around and showing them my bookcase, I'll just pull this one off the shelf because I know it appeals universally to everyone I've met so far. Many times they get sucked in and don't care to see the rest of my place/books. I don't blame them!It's quite an enjoyable read.

I did not like this book - waste of money. Nothing new or creative here. Perhaps a new reader (4-5 years) might enjoy it simply because it is comic style and they'd be proud to read on their on, but the content (fears) are not that funny or creative. My teenager could have written creepier things and created better illustrations.

I’ve yet to read the entire thing (just received it today since I preordered it). The book itself is beautiful, along with the illustrations. If you haven’t heard of the Deep Dark Fears series, I HIGHLY recommend you check it out.

Loved reading these comics on Facebook and was happy to find there was an actual set of books that gathered these comics into one binding. The drawings were just as fun to read in person as they were to read online. My only complaint was there was 97 illustrations instead of 100 which I felt would have rounded out the book better, but it doesn't make or break the book for me.

Pre-ordered this book as soon as I saw it was available for pre-order, I've really enjoyed all of Fran's work for a while now, so of course I jumped at the opportunity to throw my money at him. The book was definitely high quality, I ordered the hardcover and I like the embossed logos on the front, and some good quality full color pages. 10/10 would buy again.

Great book to have out on a coffee table! Cute illustration and great conversation piece!

Fran Krause is so creative. You can relate to the deep dark fears in a humorous and playful way! I love it!
