Review

“An accessible, deeply-engaging, and at times humorous text that illustrates the realities of teaching and learning in today’s urban schools.” ―TC Record“There is no writer working today who captures the excruciating complexity of a life in teaching with as much grace and clarity as Gregory Michie.” ―William Ayers, educator and bestselling author“Greg Michie is right: We don’t need another hero. The heroes are already there: They are our students, as well as the teachers and administrators who have a passion for justice. Those are the voices we must heed.” \―From the Foreword by Sonia Nieto, professor emerita, University of Massachusetts, Amherst“Gregory Michie’s experiences in the classroom and his purview as a teacher educator make this a good peek into the thoughts of a man willing to challenge the current notions of education reform. Rather than sit in frustration over the current tenor surrounding these so-called reforms, Michie seeks meaningful progress and solutions.” – Jose Luis Vilson, NYC public school lead teacher and writer at TheJoseVilson.com“ We Don't Need Another Hero is a big book about the small, valorous, transforming acts of teaching. For Michie, teaching is a potentially world-changing act, but on a small scale, through the acts of caring, learning, and reflecting with others on the implications of our work and its simple yet profound core. In these essays, the teacher is at the center of the democratic project." ―Kirsten Olson, founding board member of IDEA (Institute of Democratic Education in America) and bestselling author of Wounded by School

The missionary zeal, born of the "White Man's Burden", seems to have returned home to roost right in our own major cities. Highly educated, generally quite well off, often (although not always) well-intentioned white people have decided that inner city children shouldn't be left to founder at "failing" schools. School reform (measured almost exclusively by increases in standardized test scores) "can't wait". Education is, according to these modern missionaries, "the civil rights issue of our time." Fortunately, these missionaries know just what to do. They think.Like foreign missionaries, these bright-eyed young urban missionaries overlook the role of their own dominant culture in creating the "need" for their help in the first place. Elephant-in-the-room issues like race, class and poverty get swept aside as mere "excuses". What's needed are higher expectations, more "rigorous" demands, and greater "accountability".I suspect, although I admit I don't know, that Gregory Michie was originally one of those starry-eyed, rather blind missionaries. As a young, white, professional male, he took advantage of a truncated career change education program which places proven professionals into urban classrooms without going through a complete, accredited teacher certification program. The theory behind most such programs is that people with proven management and other professional skills can bring their experience in to transform urban education, often along business model lines. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out as planned, as many of these transplants realize that teaching in an urban environment is a bit more complicated than balancing spreadsheets and many don't stay in the classroom for long.As I indicated, I don't know Gregory Michie's motivations for getting into urban education. But it turned out that he was one of the good guys. He realized that perhaps things aren't so simple as they seem. He appreciated the disconnect between his affluent white male privilege and the disadvantage his predominantly poor and minority students came from. He was willing to not only acknowledge, but also explore and confront issues of race, class and prejudice, including listening to his students and allowing himself to learn from them, even about his own biases and blind spots. It takes a great deal of strength and security to be that vulnerable, but it has paid dividends in terms of Michie's deep understanding of the educational needs of urban kids and the disconnect with the methods more and more being used to "educate" them - the "pedagogy of poverty" as Michie quotes Martin Haberman. There is a distinct and growing divide between how children of the rich and elite are educated vs. children of the poor (middle class kids are somewhere in between, but slipping toward the poor end). Barack Obama sends his daughters to Sidwell Friends School, while Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel sends his kids to the University of Chicago Lab Schools. Both schools keep class sizes small. Direct instruction in reading and math make up only a small part of the curriculum and are integrated across disciplines to connect with science and social studies. Both schools further enrich their curricula with arts, music, languages, electives, P.E. and recess, and both have well-stocked libraries and athletic and arts facilities. The type of education that both Obama and Duncan envision for the rest of the country, however, is increasingly impoverished and stripped down to bare-bones basics. Long blocks of reading and math time focus heavily on drilling for skills and rote memory to be measured by regular standardized tests. Minimal time is left over for arts, physical education or other enrichment. Both Obama and Duncan favor expanded use of charter schools, especially "no excuses" type schools like KIPP which use "drill-to-kill" techniques, and extended, highly structured days with little room for individual expression, exploration or creativity. These "no-excuses" schools are supposed to address the so-called "achievement gap" between whites and minorities by focusing specifically on basic skills and necessary facts. But in fact, in all important ways, educational "reforms" are actually widening the gap because poor and minority kids are increasingly denied opportunities to be connected to and involved with meaningful and relevant learning experiences. Research has repeatedly shown that humans - especially children - simply cannot learn large bodies of facts or skills in isolation from experience. Yet educational policy leaders continue to focus on the model of children as empty vessels who need to be filled up with "knowledge". Poor and minority students especially get turned off and demoralized by "educational" experiences which in no way connect to their actual lived experience. The solution, Michie argues, is not to have more affluent whites dictating what urban children should learn, how they should learn it, and how they should be assessed on their learning. The solution is to return control to the local level - individual schools and teachers - and to teach for "social justice". Poor and minority kids don't live in a vacuum. They see injustices and discrimination all around them. Pretending that all is well and that they too can succeed if only they "work hard, be nice" alienates kids (and is, frankly, offensive), especially teenagers who see the reality most clearly. Teaching for social justice acknowledges the real life struggles kids face on a daily basis, explores the history behind them, and encourages kids to develop their own meaningful solutions to correct injustices and overcome challenges. Kids still learn all the basic academic information and skills that they need, they just learn them enfolded in a meaningful, engaging curriculum that invites their participation rather than excluding them from the conversation at all.Throughout the book, Michie gives several examples of how he himself struggled to implement such a vision and how he now encourages his teachers-in-training to view and implement such ideas. He also gives several examples of other teachers, principals and schools which are bucking the standardized trend and "educating against the grain". The key for Michie and the other educators is to view the kids as people rather than data. Building relationships and inspiring true learning are more important than test scores. Ironically, both Obama and Duncan agree with Michie, at least for their own children's education. Too bad they have other ideas for other people's children. The title of the book is a direct refutation of the movie "Waiting for Superman" which celebrated "reformers" such as Michelle Rhee and all the failed notions they have advanced over the past decade or more. It's not about getting a bunch of "highly effective" cloned teachers using identical canned lessons. It's about teachers putting themselves into their teaching and relating to their students on a personal basis. I recommend this book strongly to anyone and everyone, but especially to those who believe that privatized charter schools are preferable to "entrenched" unionized public schools. Don't be fooled by the "for the children" rhetoric. If it were about the children, their voices, along with the voices of those who know them best - their teachers and parents - would be heard, rather than the corporate interests who currently control the debate. If I thought he'd read it, I'd personally send a copy of this book to President Obama.

This is a compelling book about the state of American education. As a former classroom teacher in Chicago Public Schools and a teacher educator, Greg Michie has been on the front lines of the struggle that is happening in schools across our country. He has seen the impact of huge social issues, of bureaucracy and regulation, and of the inspiring work of everyday teachers. Throughout the text, Michie inserts stories of children, families, and teachers that uplift and inspire. It is easy for the reader to feel as though they're right there in the classroom with him. His common sense perspective, that we don't need more regulations or even more heroes, rings true in the stories he tells. He convincingly proposes the idea that we need to support, not attack, the people and relationships of the people that inhabit our schools. His call for a more humanistic approach to education should not fall on deaf ears. Development of creativity and a love of learning are the key targets we should be seeking for our children. While the foreword and cover information present this book as a collection of essays, it's much more than that. This book is a tapestry of vision and hope for the future of schools in America. We Don't Need Another Hero is a must read for anyone who cares about schooling in America.

Excellent book that tells the struggles and victories in urban schools.

Fantastic Book!I think anyone going into teaching should consider reading this!Michie has a lot of helpful advice for teachers who are just starting out and just asmuch for those with experience.

Nominated for YALSA's 2018 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list!Nominated for the Kirkus Prize! "Poignant and powerful... a meditation on the ache and longing for a place you can no longer return."―Boston Globe"Small in size but large in impact, this intimate memoir is a highly relevant and compassionate story of family, community, prejudice, and the struggle to love when the forces of the world push groups apart."―Kirkus, Best Teen Non-fiction of 2017"[Poppies of Iraq's] power lies in the contrast between the matter-of-fact nature of the text and visuals, and the dread and horror of the backdrop... there is also hope to be found here ― the hope that, no matter what befalls a nation, there will always be individuals who can craft something beautiful by virtue of their survival."―Vulture, Best Comics of 2017"The rich effect of Poppies of Iraq... comes from the manner in which the sweet and domestic rests alongside horror."―Los Angeles Review of Books"A plainly stated, emotionally devastating memoir... Throughout this bittersweet book, Findakly and Trondheim interweave the political and personal in a way that mirrors and heightens real life. Poppies of Iraq is about big events as seen through small eyes: there’s a universalness underneath the specificity. Anyone, even with a boring childhood, should find something to relate to here... an unforgettable, devastating, sweet book."―Salon"Wise, touching and wonderfully vivid... Findakly’s memoir covers an extended period in Iraq’s recent history... yet the half century ticks by with amazing ease, its author managing to tell both the story of a (complicated, fearful) nation, and that of one family of exiles coping with a new life in Paris."―Guardian, Graphic Novel of the Month"An Iraqi childhood is cherished, examined, and let go in this tender look at youth amid upheaval... an ode to a lost era, to be sure, but one with its feet planted securely in the present."―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"[Poppies of Iraq describes] a childhood caught between cultures [and] vividly capture[s] an oppressive regime as seen from a kid's guileless point of view."―Reader's Digest"The personal and political interweave in this sad yet charming memoir... Like snapshots, Findakly’s story toggles back and forth in time, depicting memories mixed with historical background and “In Iraq” vignettes about customs in that country."―Library Journal"This absorbing graphic memoir offers an insider’s view of the rapid cultural changes that beset Iraq in the latter half of the 20th century... Short vignettes about her family, school, and local customs are alternately bittersweet, funny, and affecting as a series of military and political coups impact her family’s life in Iraq... A moving, thought-provoking title for all collections."―School Library Journal, Starred Review"Poppies of Iraq is a beautiful portrait of a life lived in cultural translation, its pages filled with humor and a nostalgia made complicated with age."―Bomb Magazine"What is it like to grow up in Iraq? That’s the question at the heart of Poppies of Iraq... a beautifully drawn graphic novel that shows how growing up in Iraq is more complicated than it seems."―Bitch Magazine

The author is an Iraqi Christian, and the story is of her childhood growing up in Mosul under Saddam's regime and her family's leaving to escape oppression. It's about a time well before the US invasion in 2003, but it's a very poignant look at what the country had to endure a generation before the US toppled Saddam's regime. Having worked in Iraq for four years myself, I loved reading this perspective of a country and a people that I've come to have a deep affection for. For so many people in the West, Iraq just an unknown and scary "over there", but it's still a place where people grow up, live, and love, and works like this are important to help others understand this.

I loved it, couldnt put it down till I finished it. Well written, gives a great insight into the world that Brigitte lived in. I could go on and on, but I would recommend that people read the book for themselves

Deepy personal and heartfelt, of middle class life in Iraq outside usual media stories of this country ---loved her addition of family photos. my favorite graphic novel of 2017. Well worth Angouleme prize.

nice art style though it got old quickly; some very interesting snapshots of life in iraq but overall felt very scattershot, lacking in direction and lacking cohesion; felt a bit pretentious and very bougie. Would give 3.5 stars if possible.

Brigitte Findakly is the daughter of a French Catholic woman and an Iraqi Orthodox Christian dentist who met and married while he was going to school in Iraq. They moved back to Iraq, where they raised their son and daughter. Brigitte relates her memories of growing up in Iraq in the 1950s-1970s, why the family eventually immigrated to France, and what it was like to visit Iraq afterward. This is arranged somewhat chronologically, but not completely. Sometimes Ms Findakly goes back and forth in time, and everyone once in a while she throws in an "In Iraq" page about some part of Iraqi culture that Westerners usually find different. The back and forth ebbs in time and the random appearance of the "In Iraq" sections really took me a while to get used to. I flipped back a few pages more than once in the first 1/3 of the book thinking I had missed something. If you approach this thinking that every spread is just one memory being randomly related and don't expect it to necessarily be carried further on the next spread this will be a better read. By the end I felt like I'd gotten used to the style, but I'm only giving the book 3 stars because of the flow issues. I almost put down the book; it was that bad. However, I think if readers are prepped that reading this is like sitting down to tea with your great aunt and you never know which memory she's going to share, you'll be able to avoid the issues I had with this. I did really find it quite informative on the political situation in Iraq. I had no idea how many times power changed hands in the 1960s! It was eye-opening to see how drastically culture there has changed just in the past 50 years. It was fascinating to hear about Brigitte Findakly's culture shock going back to Iraq just 20 years later and discovering she could no longer wear what she did before and that foods they took for granted in the past were now impossible to get. So overall, I wish it had been put together in a smoother format but I adjusted, and I found the historical information fascinating, so if you can get the rhythm it is worth the read.Notes on content: No language issues. No sex scenes. There is one scene that talks about how Palestinian refugees at one time came around and showed they were naked under their robes to get handouts, this is partly shown in the illustration (due to the illustration style not super provocative, though the illustrator did include hints of one bare breast). There's another page talking about how Iraqi medicine handed out injections for everything and sometimes even had patients line up and get shots all in a row. There's an illustration showing a line up of guys with bare butts waiting for injections (again, due to illustration style not super provocative). The deaths in military coups and later on in battles are mentioned, shootings are shown with some red spots on the wall and people on ground. One coup hanged all the guys they ousted and this is shown in the illustration. Again, the illustration style helps this not be very graphic, but it is there. Emotional states of soldiers from battles is also mentioned because of all the deaths they witnessed. Mass killings of Jews and later targeting of Christians is mentioned but not shown. Further wars are mentioned but not shown.

This graphic novel tells the story of the author’s childhood as a girl in Iraq. The book shares small glimpses of life in Iraq, schools, families and more. It is a lovely way to see a culture. Unfortunately, there is also state control as Saddam Hussein comes into power and things change. Throughout the book, there is a sense of history being shared as an adult, of a beloved land lost and a country so changed it is almost unrecognizable and yet filled with family still. The art is playful and light, a strong contrast to the often heavy subject matter. Religion plays a large part in the book as the author grew up in a Christian family in an Arab part of the world. Deftly written, this book invites readers into the author’s story and leaves them with a much deeper understanding of Iraq as a result. Appropriate for ages 12-14.

A powerful, well-told account. Very much worth reading.

I bought this at Comic-Con for my kids, and they love it. They're ages 10 and 13 and both have read it over and over again. I wish this had been marketed to kids because it has really touched mine.

This book is great! It's really funny and has great illustrations in the chapters. The phrases also have cultural and background information about where the phrase is from.

I am a native Spanish speaker. The idioms in the book are very common in Spanish speaking countries, with the exception of some of them. I think it is a valuable tool to learn and expand your Spanish. With clear explanations and translations of the English ones. I would rather recommend it.

Review

Longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award for Translated LiteraturePublishers Weekly, Best Books of 2018 in Fiction“Shuttling between B-movie horror and exceedingly dark comedy, the novel is somehow both genuinely scary and genuinely funny, sometimes on the same page—a wickedly entertaining ride.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review“Grotesque, outrageous, and insanely funny, [Comemadre] has almost no equal in literature.” —BOMB“Sad, funny, and pitch-perfect.” —World Literature Today“The prose is distilled but rich—like dark chocolate.” —Chicago Tribune“Through his callous, narcissistic narrators, Larraquy interrogates the ethics of art and science, and the inhumanity we sanction in the name of intellectual achievement. Slyly funny and viscerally affecting, in a fluid translation by Heather Cleary, Comemadre is the medicine-meets-art horror story of my dreams.” —Huffington Post“The absurd is planted and buried throughout Comemadre, creating a sense of constant doubt and uncertainty. The writing is sparse and evocative, even as it takes considerable risks. The effect accomplishes a great deal in short spaces.” —Full Stop “Comemadre creates a full circle of the grotesqueries humans inflict upon one another in pursuit of immortality. . . . Read Larraquy to experience a strange waking dream from which there is no escape.” —Arkansas International“It’s a brief novel, but its impact is massive.” —Vol. 1 Brooklyn “In this dark, dense, surprisingly short debut novel by the Argentinian author, we’re confronted with enough grotesqueries to fill a couple Terry Gilliam films and, more importantly, with the idea that the only real monsters are those that are formed out of our own ambition.” —The Millions “Layered without growing dense, the book is crisply comic, scenes punctuated like punchlines. That it all happens within a mere 130 pages is a sort of magic trick—the dizzying kind where a body gets sawed in half.” —The A.V. Club“A deeply unnerving and morbidly fascinating novel.” —Booklist “Larraquy ventures into the gothic here, only to push beyond it into an even more disquieting realm of obsession, transformation, and the monstrous unknown.” —Words Without Borders“Funny, grotesque and smart.” —Brazos Bookstore“The gruesome content is handled with an absurdist touch.” —Publishers Weekly “A concise family saga by way of Dennis Cooper by way of a stress nightmare; it’s also eminently readable.” —Vol. 1 Brooklyn “Comemadre has wit in excess, spilling out over the pages, like an army of red ants, or the pools beneath a guillotine.” —Fanzine “A masterpiece in regards to dark comedy.” —Call Me [Brackets]“A strange, wild story-slash-philosophical-meander along the lines of art, life, love, and death.” —Remezcla “One of the most bizarre, darkly comic and fascinating books that I’ve read this year.” —Beyond the Epilogue“I love Comemadre. But here I am, days after reading, still asking myself what kind of book it is. Is it humor? Horror? Is it about art? Science? Philosophy? One thing is certain: it is just the kind of book that you’ll want to recommend to your friends over and over again, and here I am, still doing it!” —Samanta Schweblin“Like a beloved B movie, this is the campy horror show all my fellow sickos have been waiting for.” —Keaton Patterson“Larraquy has written a perfect novel: spare, urgent, funny, original, and infused with wonderfully subtle grace. I neglected my domestic duties to devour it.” —Elisa Albert“Moving from a sanatorium at the beginning of the twentieth century in which the doctors decide to use their patients as fodder for a deadly experiment, to an artist at the beginning of the twenty-first who pushes the fleshy manipulations of Chris Burden and Damien Hurst to a new extreme, Comemadre is a raucous and irreverent philosophical meditation on the relationship of the body to science and to art. Walking a line between parody and critique, this is a grotesquely funny and powerful book.” —Brian Evenson“Comemadre is one of the wildest and most disturbing novels I’ve read. With a language that dissects the world while describing it, Roque Larraquy constructs a dark fable about the annihilation of the body, about perversions of art and science. Heather Cleary’s magnificent translation does justice to this extravagant gem—composed like a Hieronymus Bosch diptych that sets us before the monsters of unleashed reason.” —Daniel Saldaña París“Comemadre is a sensory experience: images repeat, ‘confession’ has a smell, and obsession feels palpable. The two narrative threads within this wildly strange and perversely humorous novel map the expansive life of the mind, the drive to make a mark on history, and the impact of transgressions in art and science. If a Dalí painting could speak, it would tell us this violently charming tale of ants marching in perfect circles and bodies pushed beyond the limits of the possible.” —Elizabeth Willis, Avid Bookshop“I’m not entirely sure what the fuck just happened, but, whatever you might say about Roque Larraquy’s Comemadre, you sure as hell will have something to say. A dizzying, macabre, yet ultimately deliriously delicious tale of medical testing, decapitations, botanically-born flesh-eating larvae, unrequited love, deformities, and extreme art, Comemadre won’t soon be easily forgotten (if ever it is). Larraquy, an Argentinean screenwriter who has also penned two books (Comemadre being the first translated into English), is whirlwindishly creative and evidently possessed of a prodigious, if darkly tinged, imagination. Two distinct narratives, ultimately linked yet set 102 years apart, combine to grotesque and lasting effect. Larraquy writes fantastically and, however unlikely it may seem given its obsessive subjects, with considerable humor. The same unsettling, disquieting feeling one might be left with after engaging, say, Georges Bataille’s The Story of the Eye or fellow Argentinean author Samanta Schweblin’s Fever Dream is present in spades. Comemadre never flinches, however much its readers inevitably must. Comemadre lures, bedevils, and ultimately enamors—distending reality (and decency) in the process. Feral fiction at its finest, Larraquy’s Comemadre is beach reading if you inexplicably find yourself marooned with Piggy, Jack, Ralph, and the rest of Golding’s deserted island boys.” —Jeremy Garber, Powell’s Books“Part horror, part dark comedy, part philosophy.” —Unabridged BookstorePraise for Roque Larraquy:“Who the devil is this Roque Larraquy? His first book seems like an artifact written with four hands—amid laughter and hidden from everyone—by Jorge Luis Borges and Witold Gombrowicz. Or maybe not Gombrowicz, but Virgilio Piñera. Or maybe not Borges, but Villiers de L’Isle-Adam adapted by Paul Valéry (did you know Valéry spent his youth digging up skulls to make calculations?). What is certain is that this truly magnificent novel exudes intelligence, humor, cynicism, cruelty. Cold passion with unsettling—and unexpectedly moving—effects.” —Ignacio Echevarría“In spite of having all the necessary ingredients for a historical novel (the clinic, sordid and suburban; the positivist, anthropometric delusions), it’s not a historical novel; in spite of possessing, at first glance, the traits that generally mark ‘realistic fiction,’ (the cross between conceptual art, spectacle, and biopolitics; the gray areas of death, sickness and animalism as thresholds of humanity), something in its tone subjects the reality to a process of distancing treating it as a foreign body—alien—neither completely alive nor completely dead.” —Diego Peller, Bazar Americano“Larraquy spent seven years writing his first book . . . and another three passed before the appearance of his second. We don’t know how long it will take him to publish his next one, but we intuit that there will be a third and a fourth, because in what we’ve seen of his work up to now there is a discernible literary project—a project that’s difficult to define, for which terms like ‘story,’ ‘novel,’ or ‘poetry’ are insufficient.” —Maximiliano Tomas, La Nación

This book is fantastic. Very imaginative, extremely funny (but you need a perverse sense of humor) and very reader friendly thanks to Ms. Cleary's flowing translation. It's also philosophically thought provoking and short. 129 pages. Oh, don't worry. You get your money's worth. Along with fellow Argentinians Fresan and Saccomanno, Larraquy is now on the radarfor us gringos.

Like a musical giggle in absolute darkness, this wise, mischievous, elegant, sublime, twisty, monstrous book chills the marrow despite, no actually because of, never lapsing in taste or becoming unpleasant.

A plant that is filled with larvae that will disappear anything organic, but not in less than nine seconds. A character in this book definitely considered the actual time required to consume...

This novella is captivating, strange, and surprising. I love reading weird and new things, and this completely fit the bill. The story is separated in two halves, with the first set in a sanatorium in the early 1900s in Buenos Aires. A group of doctors are interested in what happens after death and they hatch a plan that seems less than legal involving guillotines and terminal cancer patients. It’s sort of like Martyrs meets something more bizarro and comedic, like Reanimator. The second half is set one hundred years later, where an avant-garde artist pushes the boundaries of body art.The book explores liminality, the real and unreal, the horrific of the unknown (or possibly knowing the unknown), the chaos of bodies, and how humans as a species continually attempt to live beyond what is meant for us.Death has always fascinated and repulsed humans. Does something lie beyond? How can we find out about it? Do we really want to find out about it? And perhaps that liminal, transitory space between life and death holds the answer—how can we hold on to life while seeing death and communicate back? On the other hand, the whole point of understanding death so well is really just to cheat it. And a way to cheat death, at least symbolically, is to leave your mark, to make sure that no one will ever forget you. These are the themes that came across as I read through both sections of Comemadre.I was completely captivated by the first section and found myself losing interest in the artists. If the book could have been longer, I would have liked to see how their narratives could have interplayed with each other more, perhaps with alternating chapters. But maybe that is a tired literary structure now.As it is, the section with the doctors felt somewhat unfinished and I just wanted to know more! The whole book has this air of weirdness, so it works, but I really lost all the momentum for the story at the switch. I wanted to know more about the creepy titular plant!I really appreciate Coffee House Press for offering an English translation of this unique work. I think this style of writing is gaining some steam for English-reading eyes, especially with successes like Samanta Schweblin’s Fever Dream, though it is nothing new to those who are writing it. I’m glad this book is now available to a wider audience and I hope its strangeness is appreciated! My thanks to the publisher for sending me an advance copy to read and review.

My favorite book of 2018 so far! A strange and grossly humorous look at the connections between the body, art, and science.

David Schneider’s approach to investing is unique and developed through insider experience that puts the decision making in the hands of the investor. I now understand how the 80/20 approach applies to the world of ETF’s. I will definitely be paying closer attention to global events that open low risk opportunities with index ETF investing. This book changed my perspective on index investing and my approach, patience, execution and timing of trades.

I own several index funds from Vanguard and some ETF funds too, but until I read this book I didn't really understand exactly how they worked or how bad managed funds are on average compared to them and why.I also didn't realize that the funds have to pay the indices in order to use their secret sauce formula for how much of each stock is in the fund. How the funds mirror the index cheaply is very clever.I also learned some of the dangers of index funds and a better investment plan.David has a clear writing style and tells great stories in the chapters that keep you engaged in what otherwise might be dry financial info. Recommended.

I've ridden this bull stock market for the past 9 years and have made a large profit. But, in the recent months I have gotten more and more concerned about a future bear stock market and what that would do to my profits. Further, I tried talking with my investment adviser who charges me 1.5%. I tried to get her to do a more conservative portfolio. Her only advice was to wait it out and keep on going. It seems like a dumb plan to me.So, I fired her, bought several investing books and started to read. I quickly became lost in all the possibilities and paralyzed with fear that I'd do the wrong thing.David's book was the most simple, most insightful book of all that I read. I feel confident applying the plan he laid out. Many thanks!

Tries to cover the ins and outs of index funds without actually being thorough enough. Structure of the book was pretty messy and there are grammatical errors in many places. You can tell when he really knows about a certain topic and when he doesn't. However, even when he does, the analysis does not really goes that much in depth. Some examples he uses are also misleading when you actually take a look at the sources he provides. For those who are completely new to index funds try The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by Bogle.

This book does a fantastic job of helping you understand index funds and passive investing. It gives great detail to the terms, history, pros, cons and other important concepts that individuals need to understand in order to become independently thinking investors. This is an excellent book for someone new to investing in index funds and ETFs, as well as experienced investors who are looking to learn more.

As a newbie investor with little understanding I really appreciate David's knowledge and transparency of the industry and financial market. He helps me understand it by breaking it down into "non-professional-investor"- language. I gain knowledge from someone coming from the financial industry, who has lived in different markets and has seen and experienced the inner workings unbeknown to a regular working person. He connects the dots for me so that I can understand the greater picture and am able to make wiser decisions. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in learning more about investing!

David makes the complex topic of index fund investing easy to understand for beginners. I appreciate his well reasoned and researched explanations and counterintuitive ideas. It's always important to get different ideas and David provides several that I plan to incorporate into my personal finance plan.

Excellent book. I recently decided to invest some of my cash in equity via index funds. I've read few books about passive investment and they all appeal to my way of thinking. However, I got the feeling that after you read one book about passive investment, you read them all. They all sounds very familiar and repeat basically the same thing: "buy and hold diversified market and in the long run that market will keep going up".While this sounds awesome, I was missing the counter arguments which non of these books even hinted about. Reading David's book, I now understand better the dangers, risks and possible gotchas of passive investment. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about the cons and not just the pros of passive investing.
