I can't believe that I've never reviewed this book. I don't know how many times I've read this book, at least three, and every time it seems to get better. If you've never read this series, you should. You'll have no regrets. It's a great love story with wonderful secondary characters

I only finished this book because I really hate to leave a book unfinished no matter how bad it is. My curiosity had me needing to know what was behind the main character Bianca's attitude and demeanor. I thought maybe that would make her less annoying. I also really loved both male characters Stephan and James. Their devotion to Bianca despite her self centeredness is amazing. Bianca's situation is absolutely abbhorant and by the end I felt more inclined to understand her even if I didn't like her. It was enough that I even purchased the 2nd book in this series. She is still somewhat likeable until the end of chapter 8. At that last paragraph I gave up. She is absolutely ridiculous. I hate how she treats James. And I hate that it's okay for her to be totally closed off but she demands that he give all of himself while she insists on remaining aloof and down right bitchy when he tries to get her to open up to him. I could deal if I saw her character evolving. But she only seems to get worse and it's infuriating to read. So yeah....waste of time and money on these two books. UGH.

I downloaded this book because it was free AND because a couple of book blogs highly recommended it. Even free, a book requires an investment of time and, frankly, this one just isn't worth it. When it's not being highly predictable, the plot is ridiculously outlandish. A 23 year old virgin goes from never dating and not drinking to giving her new lover a blow job while she's working? Don't think so. I also saw the Jules plot twist coming AND her father returning from a mile away. The writing is better than some romance novels, so it wasn't a grammatical nightmare to read; therefore, I gave it 3 stars instead of 2, but the characters are very one dimensional and the plot is stupid. Fifty Shades wannabe.

This is a re-read for me. When I originally read this series I was not leaving reviews. I have once then learned about the importance of leaving reviews so I'm rereading this series so I can leave my review.Hero 5/5 | Heroine 5/5 | Plot (Point, Originality) 5/5 | Writing Style 5/5 | Sex 5/5 | Romance 5/5 |Angst-Suspense 3/5 | Darkness 2/5 | Humor 1/5 |Secondary Characters 5/5 | Drama-Conflict 5/5 |Mystery 3/5 | Twists 5/5 | Action 4/5 | Overall rating 5/5For being a billionaire romance this series is my all time favorite.Blurb: James Cavendish is a playbook billionaire who has fallen smitten to Bianca Karlsson, a flight attendant. James wants her to be in a BDSM relationship only since he does not date. All goes well until a past lover for James comes into the picture. This leaves Bianca feeling left out and some what insecure and she is needing a break from their relationship. Will the two get back together? This series is full of total hotness with a dominating alpha and an extremely strong independent heroine. Tons of passion and extreme sex. What's not to love? Again, the series is so good that this is one of my favorite re-reads. It never gets old.If you want controlling alpha billionaire you will absolutely fall in love with James Cavendish. The same goes for if you like strong heroines. If so, Bianca will hold a special place in your heart.

4.5 stars!Bianca is a flight attendant working with her best friend Stephan. The two bounded as orphaned children and have been inseparable since then. When first class passenger James Cavendish takes an interest in Bianca, she's not quite sure what to think. Bianca has a troubled past and for that reason keeps everyone at arms distance except Stephan. With her friend's encouragement, Bianca strikes up an "arrangement" with James, AKA, Mr Beautiful. It seems he's a kinky billionaire, lol. They enter into a BDSM, Dom/Sub relationship. When Bianca is blindsided by James' past, she runs...smack dab into her own past.Well, this one was kind of wild, lol. The first half of the book was a little slow for me. Bianca seems to have some self esteem/self worth issues that prevent her from seeing what others may see in her, which hinders her relationship with James. James kind of comes off needy from the get go, which was not the way I expected him to act. It seems he's found a gem in Bianca and he's not used to not getting what he wants. The second half of the book hooked me. It was very exciting and I was left immediately wanting to read book 2.

Review

“Krauss beautifully explains how our refusal to believe that there are unknowable cosmic truths has rewarded humanity with brilliantly precise answers to puzzles previously obscured by the fog of dogmatic assurance… The scope of this book is truly impressive." (Science Magazine)"The Greatest Story Ever Told—So Far ranges from Galileo to the LHC and beyond. It's accessible, illuminating, and surprising—an ideal guide for anyone interested in understanding our accidental universe." (Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction)"As Bard of the Universe, physicist Lawrence Krauss may be uniquely qualified to give us the Greatest Story Ever Told — a masterful blend of history, modern physics, and cosmic perspective that empowers the reader to not only embrace our understanding of the universe, but also revel in what remains to be discovered." (Neil deGrasse Tyson, American Museum of Natural History)“College students, hippies, squares, christians, muslims, democrats, republicans, libertarians, theists, even atheists—all of us—sit around BS-ing like: 'So, how did all this, I mean everything, all of us, the whole universe, you know, man, everything, how did this all get here?' While we were doing that, Lawrence Krauss and people like him were doing the work to figure it out. Then Krauss wrote this great book about it. 'Wow, man, you mean, like we’re getting closer to really knowing? I guess we’ll have to back to talking about politics and sex.'” (Penn Jillette, author of Presto!)"In the span of a century, physics progressed from skepticism that atoms were real to equations so precise we can predict properties of subatomic particles to the tenth decimal place. Lawrence Krauss rightly places this achievement among the greatest of all stories, and his book—at once engaging, poetic and scholarly—tells the story with a scientist’s penetrating insight and a writer’s masterly craft." (Brian Greene, author of The Elegant Universe, and Director, Center for Theoretical Physics, Columbia University)"Unlike some very clever scientists, Lawrence Krauss is not content to bask on the Mount Olympus of modern physics.  A great educator as well as a great physicist, he wants to pull others up the rarefied heights to join him. But unlike some science educators, he doesn’t dumb down. In Einstein’s words, he makes it 'as simple as possible but no simpler.'" (Richard Dawkins, author of The Magic of Reality)"A rich, definitely not-dumbed-down history of physics... An admirable complement to the author's previous book and equally satisfying for those willing to read carefully.” (Kirkus)“This truly is the greatest story: how the universe arose, what it’s made of, how it works. Krauss is a warm and authoritative guide to what future generations will surely say is one of our species’ greatest accomplishments.” (Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Language Instinct and The Blank Slate)"Discovering the bedrock nature of physical reality ranks as one of humanity's greatest collective achievements. This book gives a fine account of the main ideas and how they emerged. Krauss is himself close to the field, and can offer insights into the personalities who have led the key advances. A practiced and skilled writer, he succeeds in making the physics 'as simple as possible but no simpler.' I don't know a better book on this subject." (Martin Rees, author of Just Six Numbers)"I loved the fight scenes and the sex scenes were excellent." (Eric Idle, comedian)

This is a history of modern physics that focuses on individuals and the roles they played in developing the models that now dominate our thinking. Science is seldom taught in this way in the classroom, since history has been ‘outgrown’, ‘superseded’ and so on, but the institutional development of science (particularly in a field of science dependent on enormously expensive instrumentation) is a crucial part of the story and the human element—from the arrogance of a Schwinger to the playfulness and intuitive genius of a Feynman—is not just interesting, it is also determinative, though sometimes in unpredictable and indirect ways. The story begins, more or less, with Galileo, then moves through Newton and the eighteenth century to Clerk Maxwell and beyond. Krauss has his own heroes here and I was delighted to see him enumerate them. It is fascinating to see the bases for the awarding of Nobel prizes and the personal dynamics between the recipients and the (unfairly) non-recipients.The story is always a provisional one. As Plato put it in the Timaeus, scientific explanations are ‘likely stories’. As George Steiner has reminded us, science’s strength as well as its reality is that it can be superseded. As he puts it, both Aristotle’s view of Oedipus and Freud’s view of Oedipus have value, but there is only one second law of thermodynamics. On the other hand, while science ‘applies’ and is grounded in reality in a way that the humanities are not, its dimensions and ‘laws’ change. Newton was seen as a god in the early eighteenth century but before that century was out his notions were being challenged by Lagrange and Laplace. Thus, the story that Krauss tells is a provisional one, a fact that actually adds drama to its telling, particularly when key mathematical constructs are based on the existence of particles that have not yet been actually observed. The bottom line is that the story is told very well, even though much of the material is extremely complex. One caveat with regard to the subtitle: potential readers should know that they are buying (or borrowing) a history of modern physics. This is a book about theoretical particle physics, quantum electrodynamics, and so on; it does not address the weighty question, ‘why are we here?’ How could it? In various asides Krauss makes it clear that he considers religion something that involves myth and superstition and that science has replaced metaphysics. He is certainly entitled to that position; it is a common one. On the other hand, as Hume reminded us, faith is not subject to rational critique, by definition. That is why they call it faith. Krauss uses biblical references as epigraphs (in a charming, not snarky way), but the notion that God works in mysterious ways is an important commonplace. It is also a questionable comment, given the fact that if there is a God it is highly unlikely that human observers are within any reasonable range of understanding His/Her ways, again, by definition. Meyer Abrams and others have commented on the right-angled nature of religious history. There is nothing; then there is everything. There is the fall; then there is the resurrection. God, as narrator/creator, likes to surprise us.Bottom line: the question ‘why are we here?’ is not really addressed in Professor Krauss’s book; whether it even could be addressed—beyond the musings of theologians in what Wittgenstein would call their ‘language games’—is another question altogether.

This is an outstanding book though it does have some annoyances.Krauss sets out to explain 420 years of physics: from the first description of inertia given by Galileo in the 17th Century to the Grand Unified Field theory of the late 20th Century. And do it in a short 300 pages. Be warned... at times your head will swim. But considering the complexity of the concepts he is describing, this is to be expected. Remember Einstein's dictum: "Make everything as simple as possible. But not simpler." Krauss hews to Einstein's advice perfectly. If you're coming to this book thinking you won't have to reread paragraphs, scratch your head, or really cogitate about what's being said, you're in for a rude awakening. But it's absolutely worth the effort. Krauss describes theory, experiment, and human accomplishment that is incredible. Can I say that I completely understood everything that he said? No. But his descriptions are clear enough that I understood most things, and vivid enough that I appreciated everything. And I loved the history and biography of the scientists behind the discoveries. There are some annoyances with this book. Chief among them is there are no equations! (Save for the venerable E=mc^2) It's all words. Newton's Second Law and Planck's Law are well-known even to high school physics students. Could he not have presented them simply to show how concisely physics explains the natural world? Maxwell's equations are beautiful in presentation and breathtaking in significance; Krauss should have shown them. I don't know Dirac's Equation, but I would have loved to have seen it. Krauss constantly refers to the underlying math of the concepts he's explaining. Would that I could have seen some of it, if only in an appendix. I also tired of Krauss's incessant references to the Nobel prizes and university credentials of the physics luminaries he describes. I guess this is something physicists appreciate. You need some prerequisites to appreciate Krauss: background (i.e., college) in physics and math, a desire to think about what you're reading, and excitement about physics. Finally, I did take up Krauss's challenge to answer the question: "How many piano tuners are there in Chicago? (p. 130)" The answer I came up with was 174. In Krauss's estimation, I did well. I wish I knew how many piano tuners there really are in Chicago to confirm my answer. This book is highly recommended for anyone in the fields of science, engineering, and math. It is recommended for everyone else. Though my guess is your appreciation of this book is directly proportional to your facility with science.

Looking to understand the ultimate nature of reality, but not into drugs? Try particle physics! And start with this book, which provides an excellent introduction to the subject. BTW, just want to say that if the Higgs field condensate transitions to a lower-energy state, well ... this universe was fun while it lasted. ;-)

Why should it be easy to understand the Universe we inhabit? Why should we assume the Universe and all its complexity should be simple enough to fit in one grasp of our eyes. It just doesn't. Yes, the book is complex. But this is no more a feature of the book than a feature of the Universe itself. And it also is one of the key aspects that makes this The Greatest Story Ever Told So Far, the fact that nothing (in its full meaning) was able to produce (by accident ?) galaxies, planets, life, and humans capable of going as far as postulating and finding the Higgs particle. This is Nature becoming conscious of Itself. Isn't it remarkable? And isn't it poetic? Hasn't the creativity of the human mind, subjected to the rigor of science, produced the most artistically impeccable accomplishments ever?So far.

Kraus has written a book that should be read by anyone who is half-way interested in learning why how we humans experience the world is comparable to the humans’ experience of the world in Plato’s famous Allegory of the Cave. The world of sub-atomic particles, that makes all life possible, is as fascinating as is it is complex. Unless one is already informed in the physics of current particle research (which I am certainly not), some of the language that Kraus uses is challenging (well, a LOT of the language!) but necessary. Anyone who reads this book will never think the same again about the incredible universe in which we all live.

Very helpful for our upcoming trip to Puerto Vallarta! In depth book about the area, attractions, lodging, etc. Also has guides in the back for Spanish words and phrases, customs, safety, what eat and what not to eat, wildlife...basically just a very thorough guide. Would recommend to anyone traveling to Pacific Mexico!

Always comes in handy when travelling.

Perfect product, exactly like describe, deliver on time.

Hard to find information, but it's there if you dig deep.

Needs updating...but it's still the best available for this specific area.

I'm an avid traveler, guide book user and guide book writer. I bought this book because it was about 1/2 the size of the Lonely Planet Mexico book (which covers the whole country) and would have been much better off lugging the larger book around for my month on the coast. Why? The maps are not very good (and do not have content boxes) and there are no bus schedules (note: these are likely not the fault of the author but of the publisher). I didn't agree with some of the restaurant recommendations and found some gems that should have been in the book. There were not enough accommodations listed (and those listed did not need such long descriptions). Confusing driving directions. Mis-information (like stating no surfboard rentals when there were 3 places that rented them) that I did not expect in a book published 2 months prior to my trip.On a positive note, there is some good background info in the book (history, food, culture).I know Mexico is a huge place and its hard to nail down everything when researching a guidebook, but as I said, LP did a far better job in producing a more useful book for travelers. Resort tourists looking for a little something outside the gates might be satisfied with this book.

GREAT source to prepare for your first visit to Machu Picchu. Lots of history. How much of the book is 'propaganda' ? Yes it was written many years after Bingham made his discovery, and yes some parts may have been embellished a bit - that's ok. Most of the book is very interesting to someone (me) who had not much knowledge of Inca history. I recommend - if you're going, read this book first.

I recently came back from Machu Picchu and had an interest in learning about its discovery directly from Hiram Bingham. I thought it was overall an interesting read. A majority of the book gives you a history of the Incas and how they fell from power. Hiram also speaks about his desire to locate what he knew to be Vilcabamba, the last Inca holdout before the Spanish Conquistadors ended the Inca rule for good. It's important to note that although it's mentioned in Hiram's book, some of his theories about the purpose of Machu Picchu were later disputed. The most important one was the fact that Machu Picchu was NOT the last stronghold of Tupac Amaru.I know some people disagree over whether it's better to read the book before or after visiting Machu Picchu, but I'm honestly glad I read it after my trip. It was interesting to go through the last chapter on his excavations and think to yourself: "I know EXACTLY where he's talking about!" I can picture his route there because the trip was still fresh in my mind and I had a great understanding of the altitude and appreciation for climbing through the jungle for more than an hour to get to the top of Machu Picchu. The most interesting read to me was about his companion who attempted to climb Huayna Picchu. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to climb it during my trip and that was honestly the most challenging thing I've ever done. Huayna Picchu is a vertical hike and it took tremendous effort to climb all the way to the top. That makes me appreciate the time it took Bingham's companion, Mr. Heald, to get there even more. Apparently Mr. Heald had to cut his way through lots of jungle and fell at one point, badly hurting his arm. When I got to the top of Huayna Picchu I saw lots of home structures built into the side of the mountain. What I find most fascinating is the fact that Hiram Bingham mentions that when he and his men first explored Huayna Picchu in 1912 there were NO structures on Huayna Picchu, simply several stairs, a few terraces and three caves. That means all of the home structures on Huayna Picchu were built later by the modern Peruvian government. The best part of the book, however, were copies of original photos taken by Hiram Bingham in 1912. You get to see what Machu Picchu looked like when he discovered the ruins and began his excavations. It's amazing to compare his photos side-by-side with what the Peruvian government has done today. Several of the structures were literally rebuilt but there are still a few that haven't been touched and are in their original form from 600+ years ago. At least one of the structures is an altar that the Inca used for animal sacrifices. The right portion of the structure has crumbled, and I easily spotted it in Bingham's original photo. I'm pleased to say that as of 2012 there were no changes and it looked exactly as it did when Hiram saw it in 1911.For any history buff, this is certainly a good read. It's perfect for the Machu Picchu visitor.

This is a very special book to me. It helped me understand Machu Piccu before and after I visited there. The man explains step by step how he proceeded. I found him a curious and interesting man who should have done more great things--but this was essentially what he is known for.

Hiram Bingham wrote this book many years after he "discovered" Machu Picchu in order to make some money. The book provides a lot of information - too much. Parts seem to be written more for archeologists than for laymen. I am scheduled to visit Machu Picchu which is why I read the book. For anyone else planning on going there, it is worth reading.

I had started this book before leaving for our Machu Picchu trip, but got distracted reading other things about the trip and did not finish it beforehand. I did finish the book a couple of weeks after returning, which in hindsight, is the best way to absorb the material. After having travelled through the Sacred Valley, through Ollantaytambo and along the Urubamba River and witnessing firsthand the marvelous scenery and geography of Peru, it was so much more meaningful to read about Bingham's adventures in locating the Lost City of the Incas. The steep cliffs and valleys, thick jungle vegetation and narrow passes are still foreboding today, let alone over 100 years ago without the benefit of highways and GPS !Additionally, it was useful to read the book after having heard from our professional Peruvian guides how they feel about Bingham's adventures. The Peruvians seem to have a love/hate relationship with Bingham. They acknowledge him as the "scientific discoverer" of the ruins, but they also state that the Indians were living and farming at the ruins and knew about them all along. Many of the gravesites had already been plundered over the centuries. They also acknowledge that Bingham's determination and commitment essentially created the modern tourism industry in Peru. They also believe that Bingham and his crew took away valuable artifacts (perhaps gold and silver) which were never accurately catalogued and disclosed. It was interesting to read about the excavation and process of discovery of landmarks in the ruins that we had had a chance to see firsthand. The pictures were particularly fascinating as they demonstrated how challenging it was to clear the ruins of the hundreds of years of jungle growth and try to discover the use and meaning of each dwelling and structure. For all the criticism lodged against Bingham over the years, he documented the site thoroughly with over 12,000 photos and drawings and kept meticulous records. His writing was also clear and thorough and concise, and he had a great reverence for the significance of this wonderful sanctuary.Highly recommended for anyone who is about to visit Machu Picchu or has already visited. You can't go there without understanding the impact of Bingham on the modern history of Peru.

Interesting, but to often felt I was walking hip-high through sand. Better choice to read is the very funny and interesting book, Turn Right at Machu Picchu
