I bought this for a medical terminology course I was taking. I was afraid it would be too basic, but I learned a lot.This book is a cross between a traditional textbook and a workbook. Each chapter contains a short section (~5-10 pages) of text and figures on the topic being studied, followed by a break down of related roots and terminology and a short personal testimony from a patient, which shows the clinical relevance of the information being studied. The last half of each chapter contains a number of different activities fill-in-the-blank and matching style to practice the information covered.What's helpful?-Emphasis on learning roots - rather than requiring you to memorize each term, this book focuses on common roots found in medical words so you will be prepared to confront new words you come across-Plenty of practice activities - I found there were more practice exercises in each chapter than I needed to do well, so I skipped many of them, but it was good to know they were there for topics I was a less familiar with-Concise- gives a nice overview of all the information someone interested in medicine would need to know without being overwhelmingOverall, I would say this is a great text for an undergrad or anyone interested in medicine. It must cover a lot of ground in one book, so it cannot be expected to be extremely detailed. It is a good resource to have available.*If you buy the textbook new, it comes with an access code to the Evolve website. This is useful because it has pdf's containing the definitions of the terminology used in the textbook. This is convenient, but the definitions can be found online or in any medical dictionary if you don't have the access code.

I actually think this is a very good textbook. It is straight-forward and very easy to read. It goes over basic anatomy and some basic physiology but you can skip these portions if you did well in those classes. It also has describes some diagnostic tests and diseases which is nice to see how these terms can be applied. Sections are broken down into the systems of the body (i.e., cardiovascular system, blood system, immune system, etc) and you learn the medical terms that apply to each accordingly. I only wish this book was offered in hard cover.

I purchased this book new instead of used thinking it would come with an access code as it alludes to in the description. Unfortunately, the description points you to a QR code that links to a mobile app that may or may not be useful later in the semester but gave no access to my course online - I had to purchase access to that directly from the publisher for an additional $50.The content of the book looks great but some students such as myself would benefit from a clearer description regarding access to the online Evolve course which is not included with the purchase of a new book as the description and some reviews might lead you to believe. Instead, you get access to free mobile app and online "resources" which looks similar to the course I had to purchase access to but without the graded modules.

I really love the way this book is designed, offering definition lists, intermittent review sections and useful exercises. As stated, this particular listing does not include access code (though you can access free online flash cards, quizzes, etc.)I really wish it came with a cd of word pronunciations - I paid extra for this on the website and can't get the files to work properly.If you're wavering between the paperback and an electronic version, know that this book is SO heavy. At 900-something pages, just carrying it across the room drives me nuts, so I'm grateful the course I'm taking is online.Happily surprised by this book - tons of terminology, organized beautifully.

I bought this textbook for a 'medical terminology' pair of classes, and it's great. The material is clear and easy to understand. There are plenty of exercises to work on to test your knowledge and help you remember more. The site that goes with the book is somewhat limited in its usefulness, especially when compared to wileyplus or the like, but it's better than nothing.

Halloween is right around the corner and in spirit of the holiday I want to read some of the horror books I have been neglecting for years now. This book was at the top of my list. And on sale. Coincidence? I think so! I am so glad I read this one. It's creepy, bizarre, and mind boggling. The author leaves many questions in readers minds throughout the story and even at the end. Readers interpretation of the events is key in this novel, so I suggest keeping a very open mind when reading it- you'll enjoy it more if you do.With that being said, this book is much more than I was expecting. Having thought I was just going to get a good scare was quickly replaced by the reality that this isn't what the book is about. Sure, there are scary moments, times when readers skin will crawl, and times when I felt as if I was going just as mad as some of the characters. But it is also deeply unsettling in a realistic way as it skillfully portrays mental illness and its effects on the family. Additionally, it depicts a family’s decent in a societal way and the effects it also has. Put all this together and you get a nearly brilliant novel that will chill you to the core.I don’t want to say much more about the plot because the books summary does a nice job in its description but also because I think that to fully grasp what is happening in the story that you need to read it on your own without spoilers. I will say this though, there is a lot going on in this novel. Schizophrenia, depression, paranoia, depression, and susceptibility are integral parts of the novel. So are possession, demons, and exorcism. This book will make you nervous. It may make you look over your shoulder when you enter a dark room. And it will scare the crap out of you. Should you read it? I would recommend it...

This was a good read --- but not a great one. The reason I begin with that assertion is that, based on the enormous amount of hype I read regarding this story, it did not come close (for me) in living up to that advanced praise.To begin with, this is NOT a ghost story --- although many blurbs would like you to think that. It is a thriller disguised as dark satire. The Barrett family allow a reality film crew into their home to film what is believed to be the demonic possession of their 14-year-old daughter, Marjorie. The novel is told from the point of view of the younger sister, Meredith or 'Merry'.A HEAD FULL OF GHOSTS takes swipes at reality television, religion, audience gullibility and overall pandering to an audience looking to consume a dose of all of the above. While there are a few chilling moments the true purpose of this novel is to pose a mystery as to whether or not Marjorie is truly possessed or merely a young sociopath taking everyone for a dark ride.

You know I wanted to like this book. Paul is a good writer...love some of his lines in this book BUT the story was just weird. I still don't know if this Marjorie was really possessed or not. Seems to me it was all faked by her. And the reality show seemed to make it even faker as all those shows of this type are fake!!! The story to me was a little discombobulated at times and frankly I'm not sure I buy the ending. Pretty horrible but I just don't think Merry would take it upon herself to believe her sister enough to do what she does. Not knowing for sure what the white powder is. And would she really tell authorities her dad did it and not tell the truth? At 8?? I just don't know. But seriously I really would like to know if the sister was possessed or not...And we will never really know...the story is over ...so again, Meh!

If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, you’ll like this. It is a beautifully-written story about the Barretts, a middle-class family who is rocked by one circumstance over another that pushed them to their limits. The father gets laid off and the eldest daughter, Marjorie, is exhibiting signs of schizophrenia. After exhausting their funds and efforts to send her to psychiatrists, the parents agree that their lives be documented for reality TV, where the show culminates with the exorcism of Marjorie. But is Marjorie really possessed by a demon, or is she mentally ill? Readers will be left with more questions than answers after reading this novel, but it is a good thing, as events and circumstances are crafted and interwoven perfectly to create an unnerving climax and a chilling ending. Highly recommended.

4.5 stars 🙌One of the most fantastically creepy novels about possession that I have ever read! Is that not enough for you?!I loved every minute of it! Still not convinced?!This book has some of the most evil things you will ever read about, especially that ending. Oh, and then there is also the part about the girl who is possessed. Do I have your attention?!Seriously, the only part about this book that threw me off was the ending. However, this is also the only book that I have ever liked the ending more after I thought about it, when I initially didn't like it. Usually I don't change my mind, but this one got to me. Are you curious yet?!I always say that humans can be creepy and more evil than any demon or monster, and Paul Tremblay throws humanity right in your face and makes you question your own.

This is a beautiful version of the story. My daughter cannot stop mentioning it. The illustrations are wonderful, full of details that one notices only after reading the book several times - that way the book has more to offer upon reading it repeatedly.

The tale of Hansel and Gretel is hundreds of years old and has been told time and time again. Rika Lesser's retelling, however, strives to be a true as possible to the tale as it was first published by the Brothers Grimm. Beware that this version of the story is darker than more modern, Disney-fied versions: the mother, wanting more food for herself, abandons her children in the forest. When they return, she angrily takes them back into the forest and leaves them when they're sleeping. Then of course there's the whole debacle with the children-eating witch and Gretel cooking her alive in the oven, a portion of the story that, for all it macabre violence, hasn't actually changed much over the centuries. But at the end when the children return home, their mother has "died" inexplicably, and it may just be me, but it seems likely that the father, outraged with his wife's attitude towards her children, has done her in.This is Hansel and Gretel in all its glory, with folksy, well-done illustrations by the esteemed Paul O. Zelinksy. I wish there were a bit more detail in the illustrations, but it seems Zelinksy strove to capture the rustic feel evoked by the text.My one criticism is that the story is rather long, but this is likely due to its loyalty to the original. In the final analysis, this is one of the much better - if not best - tellings of Hansel and Gretel on today's market.

I just want to say that this book ha no pictures inside, just large print. I bought it for my 3.5 year old but it's appropriate for a 7 year old who is learning to read.

As a 5 and 6 year old, I recall reading this stark version of the fairy-tale. The illustrations here are simply beautiful! I remember talking to my mom about the issues in this tale -- famine and starvation, abandonment, cannibalism, supporting, being supported by your sibling, and returning/reunited to your family after being through everything.My mom helped me understand the mom's behaviour in this story, and I hope I can do that for my son some day. Like all fairy tales, this simply looks at some of the worst that could happen, and lets you see a way out. I read it without these gorgeous illustrations too. You can't disney all of life, though I admit, I'm a sentimental soft-hearted person who cries when the cats get rained on when I'm watching the Aristocats :-) Enjoy, and think too ...

I know there are polarizing opinions regarding the validity of Dr. Amen's work, which is understandable. I myself am on the fence as to whether his brain imaging technology is truly the real deal, or a money making gimmick. He utilizes the example of a young person that they found a brain tumor in, and describes the fact that he had to have a total of 15 surgeries by the time he was like 18 years old! I might be incorrect about the numbers on that, but regardless. How is that many surgeries beneficial to a person that young?? No wonder they had a hard time trying to find a surgeon willing to perform the initial operation. It was a horrible example of a brain imaging "success" story.But anyways, I did give the book 5 stars, because regardless of your feelings on the brain imaging techniques, and despite the dismal example of a "success" story, it is inarguable that the book not only describes in detail, very real forms of depression/anxiety and how they can be managed. I am by no means a clinical psychologist, but I do have a master's degree in psychology, and have been a long time sufferer of minor depression and anxiety. I can tell you that depression and/or anxiety is not "one size fits all" and Dr. Amen does an excellent job in his book of detailing the different types. He writes in a vernacular that the general public can comprehend without a medical degree. He also goes on to provide management tips for the different types, including dietary changes, activity habits, etc. I love that Dr. Amen's motto is "skills not just pills" because too many sufferers of mental illness rely too heavily on pills, which is realistically the equivalent of putting a bandaid on a bullet wound. Life skills and coping strategies must be implemented in addition to any medications, and Dr. Amen stresses this in his book.I also like that Dr. Amen provides additional insight as to what substances the different types have a tendency to become addicted to, and behaviors to look out for. I read the entire thing cover to cover, and I feel like if nothing else, it's just such a good reference for anyone struggling to understand their emotional instability or mental illness. If someone is uninterested at first in seeking medication, there are some great tips in here for changes that can be made as a first step towards improvement. A very informative guidebook for both sufferers of such issues, and well as students and professionals in the field. Highly recommend.

A relative who is dealing with depression recommended this. I got it primarily for the suggestions on natural supplements. However, there is much more in this book than that one chapter.This included a self analysis test to narrow down each person's anxiety or depressive issues. I think it was pretty accurate. I especially appreciated the "other" section of the test -- that was where you have some "other" person take it with you, providing their opinion of how you rank in the various catagories. This form of "double check" increased my confidence in the results (my wife was my 'other,' and her answers almost completely agreed with mine, however, several times she did rate my issues as being more serious, probably because she is more objective than I was willing to be).Anyway, I'm not sure I understand all the science in some parts of the book, but I think it's definitely worth taking a look at.

Practical, stigma reducing book that explains the biology behind some mental illness. He stresses the importance of the CORRECT medicine, not just any medicine to help out with severe cases. He also stresses that lifestyle changes are as important as the medicine as with any other illness and shows how to implement those changes. There is controversy regarding how accurate SPECT studies are, but I feel they are promising and should be looked into by the neurological community

I knew there had to be more out there than just taking a SSRI and the world would be good. Just goes to prove that all brains aren't created equal. By reading and studying this book, I have seen me and others I know in this book in various parts. I have seen my brother in this book, people have discarded him and said he didn't want to change, had no will power, etc. This book, which I sent to him also, has given him hope that there is "healing" to be had for his issues.

From the minitests to the nutritional/med info, this book is fabulous. At the time, we were trying to help my spouse who was not yet diagnosed with clinical depression. Reading this, I pushed him to get help. After the Amen Clinic diagnosed him, this let me eval the meds they put him on. While he was clinically depressed and behaved in ways wanting everyone around him to be as depressed as he was, it helped the rest of us to assess how we were doing. If you are around anyone with major depression, you know you have to take care of yourself so they don't, as they drown, also drown you. This book gave us the info that let us confidently take steps to move forward. It is just an awesome book!

This is by far the worst book I have read on Anxiety and Depression. Don't waste your money. Mr. Amen knows how to sell himself and his company. It's full of brain images and how it works but empty on substance and self help to overcome it. In my opinion by the time I finished the book I had more anxiety then when I started. You'll be better off just reading other books. Remember that this kind off issues at the end of the day people suffering from these illness have to be faced them by yourself and a good therapist.

As a retired advanced practice nurse I find the science right on the money for understanding these conditions.

Great discussion of where Microsoft is headed currently. It is oriented at fairly novice programmers and walks at a nice pace though how to program. Thus the book doesn't go into depth on more sophisticated/special purpose functionality. Not the best examples (in comparison to those in the Nutshell series), but a nice clear writing style makes the topics quite understandable. Great book to get started and to piece together the many technologies popping out of Redmond these days!

Title should be prefixed with "Introduction to". Topics are not covered in much detail or with notable clarity. Probably better to get a good bock on C#7 and a separate one for dotnet core. I don't see any value in keeping it after the first read.

Excellent reference. Very well written.

I found this book really useful to start developing on Mac. The first chapters are very detailed and understandable. Later in the book is more dense and explanations are not enough for a beginner like me.

I use this as a textbook now!

About the Author

John L. Tymoczko is Towsley Professor of Biology at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1976. He currently teaches Biochemistry, the Metabolic Basisof Human Disease, Oncogenes and the Molecular Biology of Cancer, and Exercise Biochemistry and co-teaches an introductory course, Energy Flow in BiologicalSystems. Professor Tymoczko received his B.A. from the University in Chicago in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago withShutsung Liao at the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research in 1973. He then held a postdoctoral position with Hewson Swift of the Department of Biology atthe University of Chicago. The focus of his research has been on steroid receptors, ribonucleoprotein particles, and proteolytic processing enzymes. Jeremy M. Berg received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Stanford (where he did research with Keith Hodgson and Lubert Stryer) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard with Richard Holm. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Carl Pabo in Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins from 1986 to 1990. He then moved to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Professor and Director of the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, where he remained until 2003. He then became Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health. In 2011, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh where he is now Professor of Computational and Systems Biology and Pittsburgh Foundation Chair and Director of the Institute for Personalized Medicine. He served as President of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from 2011-2013. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He received the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry (1994) and the Eli Lilly Award for Fundamental Research in Biological Chemistry (1995), was named Maryland Outstanding Young Scientist of the Year (1995), received the Harrison Howe Award (1997), and received public service awards from the Biophysical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Cell Biology. He also received numerous teaching awards, including the W. Barry Wood Teaching Award (selected by medical students), the Graduate Student Teaching Award, and the Professor s Teaching Award for the Preclinical Sciences. He is coauthor, with Stephen J. Lippard, of the textbook Principles of Bioinorganic Chemistry. Lubert Stryer is Winzer Professor of Cell Biology, Emeritus, in the School of Medicine and Professor of Neurobiology, Emeritus, at Stanford University, where he has been on the faculty since 1976. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Professor Stryer has received many awards for his research on theinterplay of light and life, including the Eli Lilly Award for Fundamental Research in Biological Chemistry, the Distinguished Inventors Award of the IntellectualProperty Owners Association, and election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He was awarded the National Medalof Science in 2006. The publication of his first edition of Biochemistry in 1975 transformed the teaching of biochemistry."

I'm oddly a bit obsessed with how this book feels. It's a hardcover book, but the outside is sooo soft. It's like velvet or felt or something (I'm not so great with knowing fabrics). I just wish all my books felt this way. It was also a great book for studying biochemistry. It came in handy.

At first look, it looked REALLY used and if a chemical had been spilled on the back of the book. The reason i said a chemical is, because it spells like a chemical that i have used in lab before. Once i opened the book i noticed that the first couple of pages of the book were literately so worn out that the pages were about to fall out. Now since i have the book for almost 5 weeks now a chunk of chapter 1 and 2 have fallen out of the book and i am hoping to be able to keep the rest of the book bound together, so i won't have pages everywhere. The book overall was not in the best condition and I am really surprised that anyone thought that this book was in good condition.

Fairly good book for a biochem book. Alot of pictures and helpful anecdotes to help the reader understand some of the concepts. There are some things that are not emphasized well so it may be worth getting the latest edition. But over all a fairly good book for learning the basics of biochemistry. One glaring flaw in the book is that it depicts all the amino acids as achiral, rather than denoting the chirality of each. That was frustrating and meant i had to rely on other sources, but when it comes to those all you have too know is that the nitrogen group is to the left. COO- is at the top, H to the right and the R group on the bottom ( at least that is how I was taught). Of course...there is no substitute for an awesome teacher. =)

I took the accelerated 4 week class of biochemistry over the summer with this text, and the different search tools as well as the accessibility across devices made this text an awesome addition to my class. If I only had five minutes I could read a bit of the text, even while waiting in line somewhere. Not to mention the online version was a good deal cheaper then renting the text from my university. I would fully recommend using this version if taking biochemistry.

I rented the book for my son in college. The book came to me in what I believe was not good but acceptable condition as it was legible, wasn't missing pages etc. When I went to return it, I was told that it was not in acceptable condition and was charged 176.00 (full price minus the rental fee) for the book. There is no way to dispute, you basically have to pay and hope for the best next time you rent one. You may want to take pictures when it arrives, although it might not make a difference because as I mentioned, you can't dispute their decision. Seems like a stacked deck to me.

This textbook is pretty confusing.. I had used it for both semesters of biochemistry at school and one teacher relied heavily on it, while the other did not. It has so-so text but outlined in a somewhat confusing order, and the questions at the end of each chapter are just awful. Got an A in both semesters though.. so I guess it wasn't that bad lol

Most biochem teachers don't like textbooks; they usually prefer to write or use their own material. But it seems a large majority of biochem teachers can agree this one is possibly the best biochem textbook out there. Biochem is dense and difficult as it is, but this book did a pretty good job of explaining things.

MUCH better than the big biochem book my actual biochem course made us get. This was the book for my cellular metabolism class but I ended up using it for 3 courses! Read your texts, make good grades.
