A must-have for anyone who loves Nero Wolfe and good cooking! A nice blend of Rex Stout's classy words, introducing an array of recipes that Archie Goodwin would approve of. Just reading through The Nero Wolfe Cookbook transports you back to a more elegant and discerning time!

My low rating is based on Amazon's mistake regarding the edition, not on the cookbook itself, which is quite enjoyable. Realizing that not every edition is illustrated, I was very careful when choosing an edition. The page for the Amereon House publication stated that the edition had photographs and went on to talk about Amereon House publications, so I assumed the information about the photographs wasn't copied and pasted from a different publisher's edition. However, the hardcover Amereon edition I received doesn't contain any photographs and is 204 pages, not 215 pages as described. It looks identical to the one on the Amazon page except it is burgundy, not blue, and it does not have a publication date. Hopefully Amazon will change its description. If the photographs don't matter to you, you'll probably love this edition; the book is well made and definitely worth getting if you're a Nero Wolfe fan. The Nero Wolfe Cookbook

This is not a cookbook for the novice-all of the recipes take a good deal of time, but make very delicious food when complete. I regularly use the recipe for Fritz's Bread and have received many compliments on it. The instructions are easy enough to follow, but some of the terminology may be beyond the beginner-while the initial recipes describe how to clarify butter, there are easier ways to do so that I had to look up. The food is very good but time-consuming, so we save this cookbook for special occasions. The tidbits of Nero Wolfe stories that accompany each recipe are entertaining and make me want to get the books! Some of the ingredients are much less common in our era than they may have been in 1930 (I think that's when Rex Stout began writing); I live in a large town and have no idea where I'd go to get fresh pheasant.The Shrimp Bordelaise recipe in here was tastier than the crab bordelaise I had in New Orleans, if you'd believe it. I highly recommend this cookbook.

The book is OK but does not include any of the graphics which are talked about - the images of New York, or any images for that matter, are missing. If you want only the recipes then this book will be for you.

After reading others'reviews, I got a clear understanding about what to expect and my expectations were certainly met. This is NOT a photo-filled, colorful cookbook, but I am still excited to try many of the recipes which captured my attention when reading the series. I think it is a must for Nero Wolfe fans.

Even if you never read a single Nero Wolfe mystery, you'll get a kick out of how his creative author involves these recipes with his books. You'll want to fix some of these. I had a mystery dinner one night and this was the perfect cookbook for it.

If you are at this review, it is probably because you are a Nero Wolfe fan. So it is preaching to the choir to tell you to buy all the books about the detective. While you are waiting for your order to arrive or reading those books you already have, make something from this wonderful little volume. I have many cookbooks, some of which have only a few good recipes, but every recipe I have tried from this one works, which tells you it was thoroughly tested by the author (Rex Stout). There are items by chefs of many nationalities, and among those pleasures there is a uniquely American Exalted Cuisine laid out for the lover of great dining. Wolfe's chef was the Swiss Fritz Brenner, so great European culinary traditions were brought to bear on North American provender. My personal favorites are green corn pudding (THE FATHER HUNT), and Fritz Brenner's finest salad with Devil's Rain Dressing (POISON A LA CARTE), and Blueberry Grunt (THE FATHER HUNT). Get this cookbook now, but pay attention to detail as you cook because flavor combinations are subtle and will dance among your tastbuds! By the way, Blueberry Grunt must be called by that apparently homely name because after eating it, you cannot speak, but only grunt softly with supreme satisfaction.

First of all this rating is for the quality of the book only, not the recipes. The book that was sent to me is missing all of the pictures that were shown in the preview - in fact there isn't a single illustration or picture in the entire book. In my opinion, they were one of the reasons to purchase the book. Secondly, the printing on this edition is VERY poor. Most pages are printed crooked and off center. It is a very poorly printed book.Even if the recipes are outstanding, I would not purchase the book. In fact mine will be heading back to amazon shortly.

A wonderful companion to the Nero Wolfe experience, but the recipes are not for the inexperienced cook. We started with the baked scallops and were delighted, but there are several steps and you can screw up easily if you lack the right equipment or skills.The excerpts are sly and the pictures are endearing. We wouldn't have minded a few images of the entrees, but the photos of period New York gently blur the line between fiction and reality, as does the whole book itself.Buy this one if you are Wolfe obsessive, or (much better) if you can cook. But beware! Wolfe's tastes reflect a complete disregard for his health, so butter, eggs, and cream are in every second dish. A few call for ingredients you can't get (turtle meat, for example), but most rely on a short litany of spices and vegetables on top of easily found meats and fishes.You will never really be able to have Fritz come visit your kitchen, but it's fun to imagine him watching over your shoulder, or peeking into your dining room, as you savor what might have been his own cooking (if you're chef enough, that is).(Oh, our copy lacked the last page of the index, and it appears to be a printing, rather than binding error. Annoying, but we've given it 5 stars anyway.)
