Review
"Combining Indian food with a slow cooker offers a winning combination. This book is perfectly timed to help us all reconnect with our slow cookers and offers a wonderful range of recipes."―Peter Sidwell, Founder of Simply Good Food TV "With vibrant images throughout and informative writing both on the origins of these classic dishes and how to use this often neglected piece of equipment (the slow cooker), Hari has changed the way we look at and cook Indian cuisine. The book includes recipes to suit all tastes, including vegetarian and meat dishes, sides and even dessert! This is the perfect book for anyone with a busy lifestyle."―Tony Rodd, Chef at Copper and Ink "A genuinely useful, informative book. Hari makes a virtue out of the slow cooker appliance as it chimes so perfectly with the traditional slow cooking required for many Indian dishes―dishes you can do 15 minutes of prep for, then leave to cook to perfection while you get on with other things."―Karen Barnes, Editor of delicious. Magazine "These mouth-watering recipes will inspire you to create fabulous Indian-inspired soups, dhals, curries, rice dishes and sweets at home with minimum effort and maximum flavor. A must-have for all lovers of Indian food and fuss-free cooking."―Saira Hamilton (@SairaHamilton) "Hari's book isn’t just full of recipes, there’s a ton of information about all the regions of Indian cuisine, how to get the best out of your slow cooker and even how to make your own spice blends."―Jamie Spafford from Sorted Food (@JamieSpafford from @sortedfood) "This is one of those cookbooks you know you will turn to again and again―and of all the cuisines, Indian is the one that really does taste so, so much better when made yourself. Who knew making real, fresh Indian food could be so convenient?"―Rachel Brady, http://www.mrsrachelbrady.co.uk

The book has very interesting recipes, and I like the fact that she doesn't use the silly approach of "set it and forget it", that in my opinion ruins most dishes prepared in the slow-cooker. The reason why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5, is the lack of photos. There are no photos for any recipe in the book, and for an author who has a very reputable food blog, making a cookbook without photos is a bit surprising.I am a very visual person, and love to see what the dish should look like - I understand that it rises the price of the book, makes its production more complicated, and would settle for a book in which not every recipe comes with a picture. But no photos at all? That's a bit much. Still, the recipes are so detailed and she evidently has a ton of knowledge and experience, so I am giving it 4 stars... Maybe in her next edition she can work on adding great photos too? ;-)
Being a complete novice to preparing Indian food, I opted for what may be the easiest recipe in the book to begin: Dhai, or Homemade Greek-style Yogurt (p. 176). Since I was uncertain how I’d do, I reduced the recipe to about a quarter of the quantity. I allowed plenty of time to cook the milk in the slow cooker, and checked it way too often, nervous beginner that I am. It took longer for the milk to reach 175 to 185 degrees on low in my slow cooker, which is apparently an under-achiever. Once it reached the correct temperature, then you have to remove the lid and let the yogurt-to-be cool to 115 degrees. Again, I nervously checked it way too often. The next step was my favorite, blanket cover the slow cooker and let it set overnight. But the best was tasting the velvety, smooth and delicious results. Proudly, I shared a bit with a neighbor who often has made her own, but in a yogurt maker. (Wonder if she’ll share for next time?) Anyway, all is good. It passed her taste test, and she pronounced it absolutely delicious. Not too sweet, nor too tart…just right. I sent Little Red Riding Hood back home with some. In fact, it was so good, I was sorry I didn’t make the whole recipe. Next time! This plain and simple recipe entices me to try some more complicated (for me) recipes in this cookbook. I’m glad to have this review copy of the cookbook, as I’ll happily be exploring it for some time to come. I know I'll have to stock my pantry with ingredients I've never even heard of, but I'm game if I can find them. If not locally, there's always Amazon!
I follow Hari's recipes on her web site and on her app so had to buy the book. The recipes are easy to follow and for being new to Indian cooking I have learnt so much. Hari details a lot about the ingredients, spices and history of the meals at the start of the book so you are not going into cooking without background of the dish and how it is put together. I liked the history as it was a great knowing the background to the culture of this beautiful food. You do need to buy various spices which are easily found in the UK supermarkets or indian grocer. When you consider how many meals you will be able to produce and it is home made and healthy it is very low cost cooking homemade. I used to feel intimidated by spices but the advice Hari gives is great and it is like a friend learning you to cook. Every recipe I have made, over a dozen have turned out perfect, just like a high end restaurant. I love that Hari has made the recipes for a slow cooker which takes the worry out of leaving something on the stove as you can walk away and leave it. I would definitely buy a second book and I look forward to another coming out. I would love to see more photos of the finished dishes in another book which I cannot wait to buy. I highly recommend Fenugreek Chicken, Hot Goan Style Coconut Chicken, Chettinad Chicken, Chicken Biryani, Red Lentil Dhal but cannot fault any recipe I have made. Thank you so much Hari for the recipes.
This book is awesome. Detailed instructions, beautiful pictures, lots of information re spices etc, to have on hand. I cannot cook on stove because I am on oxygen, so I bought a multi-cooker. Because I love Indian food, I purchased this book, which helped me to buy my spices at My Spice Sage. Now I am ready to make my favorite-Beef Vindaloo!!!
This cookbook is terrific! I'm trying my third dhal recipe today. My husband is British and loves Indian food. I wanted to find simple recipes that wouldn't take all day to prepare, and this book is perfect for that. The author has a very helpful section at the beginning of the book, discussing various ingredients and staples, which was very helpful for a novice like me. I made a list of common ingredients, went to my local Indian store, and began the journey! :-D I bought an additional copy for my daughter and vegan son-in-law as well, as it has many vegan recipes, with quick prep.
Excellent book and a great price. I mostly eat vegan and there were plenty of recipes. There were also suggestions on making other recipes vegan. I liked the way she described how the dishes are eaten in India and from what regions they're from
I love the spicy in Indian food, but I never understood how complex the flavors are. This book gives very detailed Regional descriptions, and the slow cooker is perfect for setting the flavors. You WILL be buying a lot of non-traditional spices, so find a good Indian grocery.
I think these are difficult recipes. But.... the chef writer has done the work of figuring out what works best with slow cooker, so if anything use this as reference when simplifying some online simpler Indian food recipes.
