Amazon.com Review

When Christopher Robin asks Pooh what he likes doing best in the world, Pooh says, after much thought, "What I like best in the whole world is Me and Piglet going to see You, and You saying 'What about a little something?' and Me saying, 'Well, I shouldn't mind a little something, should you, Piglet,' and it being a hummy sort of day outside, and birds singing." Happy readers for over 70 years couldn't agree more. Pooh's status as a "Bear of Very Little Brain" belies his profoundly eternal wisdom in the ways of the world. To many, Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and the others are as familiar and important as their own family members. A.A. Milne's classics, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, are brought together in this beautiful edition, complete and unabridged, with recolored illustrations by Milne's creative counterpart, Ernest H. Shepard. Join Pooh and the gang as they meet a Heffalump, help get Pooh unstuck from Rabbit's doorway, (re)build a house for Eeyore, and try to unbounce Tigger. A childhood is simply not complete without full participation in all of Pooh's adventures. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

About the Author

A. A. Milne was born in England in 1882, the third and youngest son of London schoolteachers. As a boy he wrote verses, parodies, and short humorous pieces for his school’s paper. He went on to study at Cambridge.   In 1903 he left school to write. Before long he was supporting himself on his earnings, and became an editor at Punch magazine. In 1913 he married Dorothy de Selincourt. He began his military service in 1915 in Europe. During this time he wrote three plays, all of which were produced on the London stage.   Christopher Robin Milne was born in 1920. It was Christopher’s toy bear, pig, donkey, tiger, and kangaroo that became the inspiration for the famous Pooh books.   A. A. Milne wrote more plays, a novel, his autobiography, and political nonfiction, although he is best remembered for Winnie-the-Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, When We Were Very Young, and Now We Are Six. Milne died in 1956.   Ernest H. Shepard was born in 1879 in London. His mother, who died when Ernest was ten, encouraged her son to paint and draw, and there was never any doubt that Ernest would be an artist. He was later awarded medals for his work and was named a Landseer Scholar. In 1901 his first picture exhibited in the Royal Academy.   In 1903 he married Florence Chaplin. The Shepards had two children—Graham, who was killed in World War II, and Mary, who later illustrated the Mary Poppins books. Shepard served in Europe during the war. Afterward he joined the editorial board at Punch, where he met A. A. Milne.   Shepard’s drawings appear in many books for adults and children. Among them is Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. Shepard died in 1976.

I gave this book as a baby shower gift. Talk about it being a hit! It was perfect.

I am 85 years old and sent this to my now 6 year old granddaughter. My son sent me a video of her readingthe last poem in the book which I memorized long ago. I would never have believed that this could ever bepossible, but am grateful to everyone who helped to make it happen. Thank you.

This is a lovely keepsake-quality book with all the illustrations those of previous generations remember with affection. I was disappointed, however, to find these "complete tales" did not include the teddy bear poems from Milne's "When We Were Very Young", my own introduction to Pooh over 80 years ago.

I bought this sweet book for myself, because I am simply smitten with the gentleness and kindness that is so commonly illustrated in its pages. I know it is supposed to be for children, but there is plenty for adults to learn, if they care to. I love this book!

It is a great story and book for children. Unfortunately the book presented for sale is not what you receive. The book for sale is a special addition that is printed in the USA. The one you receive is not the special addition and it is printed in China. The ad and preview for this book is misleading.

Is not as shown in pictures, what I receive is in black and white it doesn’t have images in Color, so not as shown in the “look inside part” be careful if you are looking for a nice book with colored images, this will disappoint you :(

Like pretty much everyone else in the world I'd heard of WINNIE-THE-POOH. I'd even seen a lot of the TV shows and movies (a friend of mine actually wrote some of the TV shows for Disney). But it wasn't until I watched GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN that I became interested in reading the books. I am so very glad I did.I've only read the first one so far, and, as expected, it is a wonderful children's story; but what I didn't realize was how uniquely well-written it is. Admittedly the opening caught me off-guard and I had to re-read it twice to understand the point-of-view, but once I realized what Mr. Milne was doing, I loved it.Yes, the storytelling is simplistic. Mr. Milne is obviously writing for a very young audience. This makes his style entirely appropriate, plus his ability to tell his story from the standpoint of a child is amazing. But it is his characters that make WINNIE work most of all. They are brilliantly childlike and likable.Kudos, Mr. Milne. WINNIE-THE-POOH is a wonderful accomplishment, and deserves all of its accolades. I have no doubt it will still be around in another hundred years.

Book came quickly despite the crazy weather. I purchased this for my 3yo nephew knowing that I read and loved the stories when I was small. I hope that he finds the stories as entrancing as I did. The book is beautiful, and has the updated dust cover art shown on the main image. Pages are heavyweight and have high quality printing and the hard cover came unblemished and undamaged from shipping. Pooh is embossed in gold on the light blue cover. Will buy again once my other nephew is a little older.

When I went away to college many years ago, my mother loaned my "Winnie-the-Pooh"—received on my fifth birthday—to a young co-worker to read to her children. It was never returned. I have been mourning ever since! The fact that this book had everything the original had, except the hardback cover, made it irresistible. I bought it! It did not disappoint. I saw the same dear pictures of the same beloved Pooh in the well-remembered interesting situations with his unique take on matters and his same friends and his companion, Christopher Robin. The book now has joined its mate, "The House at Pooh Corner." My bookcase is no longer missing something. Get this book and read it to your children or give it to them to read, as my mother did me. It cannot be replaced by the Disney Pooh. That Pooh is a whole different animal...trust me. Oh, and lend it to NO ONE. Get them one of their own!

On Her Father’s Grave by Kendra Elliot is a great start to the Rogue River series. Kendra is writing two of the four books and Melinda Leigh is writing the other two. On Her Father’s Grave is an excellent start to the series. I do not know why some books just connect with a reader and you cannot read enough of the book, I just know that this was one of those books for me. I could not read it fast enough or enjoyed it more.Stevie Taylor returns to Solitude, Oregon, after her father’s death. She realizes how much she has missed being around her family and her hometown. She is hired as a patrol officer in the department where her father was the chief. He has been replaced by Zane Duncan, who is not from Solitude. But he is well liked by Stevie’s family and her deceased father felt like Zane was one of his sons. Will Stevie and Zane be able to work together or will Stevie dislike Zane for trying to replace her father? The two of them must work together to solve the mystery of why a teenager dies of no apparent cause. There is an unknown substance found in the dead teenager’s system. When another teenager dies under similar circumstances with the same substance found, Stevie and Zane are afraid there is a big drug problem facing them. They need to find out what the new drug is and who is supplying it to the teenagers, before any other teens die.The hometown setting and the family closeness make this book an exceptional read. The characters are well developed and well rounded. They are likable and people you would like to have as a friend. There is a relationship beginning to build between Stevie and Zane and I cannot wait to see where it leads. Some of the family members are behaving oddly and I want to find out the reason behind it.The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. I was hooked from the first page, wanting to learn more about each of the characters. The mystery of how the teen died and who the drug supplier is was carried on until the end. Since this is the first in a four book novella series, these questions, and others are not yet answered but there is a good foundation for the rest of the books. My only complaint about the books is that it is a novella. I wanted this book to be a full length novel because it was so good. I knew before I read this that it was a novella, but I wanted more to read right now. But I will definitely read the other three novellas when they are released. I have read other books from Kendra Elliot and I loved them all. This book is a great read and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery.I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the opportunity to read and review this book.

To be honest I'm not normally a fan of ongoing storylines such as this. I usually like my couples to get a happy ending and move on from there. However, I tend to enjoy novellas when written by talented authors and so I thought I'd give this first one in the "Rogue River" series a try. Although I do own other books by Kendra Elliot, I'm ashamed to say I haven't read any of them. That's a mistake I'll have to correct because I really enjoyed this story. Zane and Stevie were both well fleshed, and I truly cannot wait to follow them along on their journey. This entire story was fast paced, full of action and suspense, and literally just flew by. I have no doubt I'll enjoy watching their professional and personal relationships develop as the series continues. I'm already looking forward to book 2 by Melinda Leigh next, and seeing what she has in store for Stevie's sister Carly and her estranged husband Seth. I may have to wait for a price drop though, because I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $3.99 for a novella.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2REVIEW:On Her Father’s Grave is the first novella in Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh’s combined new novella series The Rogue River Series. And like any good novella the story was over way too quickly. We open On Her Father’s Grave with Stevie Taylor returning home after the passing of her father and her getting tired of life in LA. But not all is smooth sailing on Stevie’s first day of work or the day before her first day of work. The death of a local teen has everyone on edge.Zane Duncan finds himself through into the role as Chief of police (and not by choice). But what can he do other than honor the man who treated him like one of his own. Zane knows something is not right with Hunter’s death but finding the answers are not that easy. Could there be more more to this than just a kid overdosing on a new drug?Like any novella I review I can't give you much more then I loved it. I can’t wait for the next installment by Ms. Leigh to find out what happens next in the quiet little town of Solitude Oregon. I do hope that we will get to see more of Zane & Stevie in future books too. I want know what is happening with them. If you enjoy romance suspense you really should at On Her Father’s Grave to your read list.Disclaimer:I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley & Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

I really enjoy Kendra Elliot. In a series of four novellas, Ms Elliot paired with Melinda Leigh to create a quiet Oregon town that is beginning to lose its innocence about drug use. The chief of police and his newly hired police officer from LA are just ferreting out the issue at the end of this story. I presume it will continue in the next three of the series. As noted above, the characters develop quickly and are well drawn including the supporting cast. Many questions are raised and hints are given to make the reader wonder who is involved with the drugs. I believe this is a good start to a novel. If you like a bit of romance, that is thrown in, too. However, it appears the reader will need to purchase four novellas at about three dollars each to finish this work. I am not that enamored of the story to spend the money. I will continue to read Ms Elliot's full-out novels. They are adrenaline pushing and fully formed in plot and character and not overly formulaic and cost at least half as much as this Rogue River series. The Rogue River series would have made one pretty good book.

This is a truly wonderful song collection. VERY well written. The accompaniment is lovely, very pianistic, rich and unique. I accompany myself when I sing, and it is truly a pleasure to play these beautiful, flowing songs. Interesting brief interludes between "verses" that are not only interesting to hear, but good opportunities for the singer to prepare. The vocal part is excellent for a soprano voice! Quite a few high B flats, and some lower parts as well, down to a B flat below middle C ... nice tessitura for me, as well. These songs are versatile, most could be done at any time of the year. Give Me Jesus and Deep River are nice selections for funeral services, or just anytime.Highly recommended!

Let me start by saying I LOVE Moses Hogan and the MH Singers. The arrangements are incredible. But this? Was he under contract with a deadline of the next day? Just awful.

I am a high school choral director so I am quite familiar with Mr. Hogan's choral arrangements. When I saw this product, I figured I should give it a try. The settings of the spirituals are spectacular. The vocal lines are simply beautiful, filled with lyric, emotional power. Accompanists will love these arrangments as well. They are challenging enough for an intermediate player but offer enough freedom for the accomplished musician to augment as she or he sees fit. I have sung some of these songs in sacred and secular environments and the reaction to them has been enthusiastic, to say the least. I attribute that more to the arrangements than my performance! If you love to sing spirituals, this collection needs to be in your library.

I love this book, it has some good arrangement of songs. The only thing is the paper used to print the music is so hard.

Great variation, selection, and arrangements. You can't go wrong with Moses Hogan. These pieces are both challenging musically and pleasing to audiences.

Lovely arrangements of spirituals for solo voice by the late Moses Hogan. It comes in high voice & low voice with the same songs in both.

As requested

Beautiful arrangements of well known spirituals accessible to most soloists. A "must have" for both soloists and teachers of singing.

Up in the Tree, by Margaret Atwood

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. First published in Canada in 1976, Atwood's small, whimsical book has been reprinted for U.S. distribution for the first time. In her author's note, Atwood mentions that she wrote and illustrated the book during a period in which two-color printing was common, and she says that she had hand-lettered the book to save money. The production does appear dated, but that doesn't detract from the appeal. Rendered in shades of red and blue, the fanciful illustrations extend the story of two saucer-eyed boys who live in a tree. The book resembles an easy reader: short sentences composed of basic vocabulary; rhythmic, repetitive phrases to help propel new readers through the story. Spare and simple, this title offers a refreshing return to basics. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

...a whimsical story of two big-eyed kids who, indeed, live in a tree....for those who think Atwood can't do cute, think again. (Calgary Herald 2006-04-06)...little people will...become enchanted by the sounds and cadence of the words in Up in The Tree. (Globe and Mail 2006-04-06)A delightful addition for any school, library or personal collection! Highly recommended. (Resource Links 2006-06-06)Spare and simple, this 30-year-old title offers a refreshing return to basics. (Booklist 2006-04-01)The lyrical, rhyming text will delight even the youngest children, and early readers will be able to read the book independently. Highly recommended. (Resource Links 2006-06-06)This could be a collectible - not just because it's Atwood. Because it still rocks....a gem of a book. (Sheree Fitch New Brunswick Telegraph 2006-04-06)

perfect for all ages

lovely children's book, those I teach enjoyed it.

Seller shipped as promised. This children's book by Margaret Atwood is also illustrated by her. This is a must read for parents- who live in the mind of a child.

This is a rather simple little book but it holds enormous appeal for quite a number of people; myself included. Margaret Atwood has written several children's books in addition to this one which includes such works as "Anna's Pet" (1980), "For the Birds" (1990), "Princess Prunella and the Purple Peanut," (1995), "Rude Ramsay and the Roaring Radishes" (2003), and Bashful Bob and the Doleful Dorinda," (2004). While all are good books, the one being reviewed here is my favorite. (There may quite well be more that I am unaware of...if you know of them, please add the titles to the comment section here). This is a story of two wide-eyed little children who live in a tree with an owl. There is a ladder leading up into the tree and one day two beavers come along and reduce their wooden staircase to a bunch of chips! What will they do? "Oh moan! Oh groan! There is not telephone. Are we stuck FOREVER in this horrible tree?" Well as chance would have it, a very large masked bird comes to their rescue. The children then build a permanent ladder of boards nailed to the trunk of the tree and all is well. This is truly a rather odd little picture book and as I said, it appeals to me greatly in a sort of quirky way. The text is simple with short sentences and workable words. It is ideal for the young beginning reader. To be hones, this book reminds me a lot of Dr. Seuss in the over all feel and tone, but is more laid-back and mellow than most Seuss books....not the "edge" or intensity you find in some of his work. And the art work! It is interesting to note that the publisher of this work (And please note that the author was the illustrator of this book and that the text is hand lettered by same author), did not want to sink a lot of money into this project so only two colors were used and we get both pictures and text in all sorts of shades of red, blue and brownish color. The art work looks as if it came from the primitive school which makes it all the more appealing as far as I am concerned.Kids seem to love this thing and so do I which probably says quite a bit about me as a person I suppose. My wife is constantly asking me what I want to be when I grow up...I have half a mind to tell her I want to live in a tree with an old owl.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

I love this book as much as everything else I've read from Atwood. It's difficult sometimes to explain children certain concepts but this book helped me to explain the importance of freedom of choice. Sure the best thing in the world for these kids is their tree but when they are forced to be there all the time they really hate it and can only start loving it again when they are helped by others to build a ladder to be able to come and go as they please.

This is, I believe, Margarent Atwood's only children's book. She both wrote and illustrated it. It is a wonderful, creative, "different" and witty story. My boys identify with the adorable characters.

This my fourth book by Craig Childs. I have loved the writing in all. Childs has intimate knowledge and a deep personal connection with his subjects. Add to this his passion and writing skills and his books are beautiful and engaging narratives of whichever subject he discusses. His writing is filled with the experience of a lifetime of wandering around the desert. His eyes see things and his writing tells us things we could not likely discover on our own. He goes to places we will never reach because they're just too hard to get to and brings back stories of those places we cannot see.Throughout his writing he holds unerringly to his moral compass. His travels mirror the naturalist mantra to "take only pictures, leave only footprints". He is a careful and respectful traveler who leaves the world as he found it. He raises many ethical questions related to this way of traveling and brings the reader into his personal conversations about what it means to intrude on these special places. He questions what it means to be a traveler in history as well as nature. The questions are very compelling and in my own case surprised me with my own answers.I have two critiques about this and his other books. The first and a minor one is the artwork used to illustrate them doesn't measure up to the quality of the writing. They give a sense that they were done by a friend to whom he couldn't say no. They don't add to or support the story and are somewhat amateurish. In books where location plays such an important part, having understandable and clear maps or other illustrations is important. My other criticism is harder to qualify. The author was born and raised in the desert and knows it well. As his writing implies, he spends much time alone exploring the Southwest. While this relationship to the desert has given him unique insights, it also has given him a sense of personal ownership that isn't his. From time to time, Childs lets slip a kind of proprietary attitude in which he speaks derisively of tourists and "hiking clubs" he comes across in his travels. He generally describes their presence as an intrusion into his desert.Living in MN "lake country" I am very familiar with this kind of attitude. Many MN lakes are surrounded by private homes and the owners have an attitude the lakes are "theirs". This can vary from just an attitude to actively discouraging access to public access sites. The lakes in MN are public as are the deserts in the Southwest. In the case of the desert, much of the author's stomping ground is Federal land, access to which is the public's right as much as his. There is also a sense that Childs' questions the moral purity of those visiting desert places. While he inhabits these places in a deep and real way, he seems to dismiss those that just come to look. The experiences of both visitors are real, just different but for me the underlying attitude I felt from Childs spoiled the stories a little. Make no mistake, Childs has seen the worst of human behavior in the desert; the damage of pothunters being a glaring example. But Childs' desert, like so many other places attracts different people for different reasons. The Secret Knowledge of Water follows Childs' path as he looks for, and finds water in unexpected places. Like his other writings, it celebrates the journey and it's worth taking.

This is a beautiful book.Craig Childs is such a special human being with an amazing perspective on wilderness and water and the desert. I originally read this book when I was at university in Northern Arizona and recently I saw Craig speak at an environmental film festival. It prompted me to read his book again. It was WAY better with some years under my belt. I felt like some bigger life experience brought some extra gumption to the reading experience.I highly recommend this book to anyone who's never read it, or has read it years ago.

Craig Childs' The Secret Knowledge of Water: There Are Two Easy Ways to Die in the Desert: Thirst and Drowning is difficult to review, as it is about one man’s fascination, really, enthrallment, fear and respect for water in the desert. This simple sentence does not do justice to Child’s book. In his quest to find water in the desert, Child delves deep into what it means to be alive, to exist, to be a rock, a tree, or a simple organism. In this book Childs has created a meditation on life and death, fecundity and bareness - on the nature of the universe. The book is unavoidably spiritual in tone, but Child is well-versed in the science of water. There is no divide between spirit and science here. The writing is superb; even if you have no interest in water, Childs will pull you in with his compelling language, his fascinating marshaling of facts, and his infectious curiosity - even his evident madness. This is by far the most compelling book about “nature” I have read in a very long time.

We were in the desert hiking in a slot canyon in March, and our guide mentioned this book. I saw it in the gift shop of our hotel and bought it for the flight home. I thought it might be dry reading (please excuse the pun) but I had fallen in love with the area we had just spent a week exploring and wanted to learn more about it. It is a great read! The author starts with the scarcity of water and builds section by section from trickles to springs and then to terrifying floods. The book is beautifully written; it is interesting, suspenseful, informative, and poetic.

Craig Childs has become one of favorite writers recently. I was at the Grand Canyon last fall and saw a book of his on Wildlife encounters and bought it thinking it was about encounters at the Canyon. One story into that book I didn't even care that it wasn't, I was hooked on his creative descriptions and personal, easy style that I had to have more. This book is mind altering in the way I now think of water. I've thought for decades what an amazing element of our lives it is...all that it does for us and the limitless ways we use it and it's still here and available. But Mr. Childs has opened my eyes to completely different ways of seeing and appreciating this amazing substance we take for granted because of our modern plumbing. No matter where you live get this book. But if you live anywhere in the Southwest Desert this book will alter the way you approach the desert..

An excellent book for a vacation read in the desert. I started while spending a week in Arizona, and found that experiencing the desert landscape while reading Childs' book made it all the more enjoyable. It just wouldn't be the same in Colorado.More of a Hemingway than a field manual, I learned about the patterns of water in the desert nonetheless. I've heard frequently about desert floods, but never witnessed one on my own. I think that most underestimate the power of water in the desert, ignoring the evidence in the spectacular canyons that fracture it. Childs has me both frightened and curious to witness one.

My baal teshuva friend uses these as her family haggadot, even for adults. When I saw that, I ordered my own for our family seder. It has interesting fact/tidbits and colorful illustrations to accompany the haggadah text. It is truly enjoyed by the adults at my seder table, while my children actually use the haggadot that they create in school.

Great addition to our Seder. Fun for adults and children.

Informative and colorful

Very nice, cute pics, The kids enjoyed it.

We love haggadot and were so pleased to find this one on Amazon. It has a very good amount of explanation and really adds to the seder and celebration of Passover.

to children so i can't readily rate the book. It looked good to me. Easy to read and nice illustrations...

Very well laid out.

Excellent for my children. Also great introduction to those who are unfamiliar with the Torah. Gentle introduction, not too intimidating. I absolutely love it!!!
