Very helpful for our upcoming trip to Puerto Vallarta! In depth book about the area, attractions, lodging, etc. Also has guides in the back for Spanish words and phrases, customs, safety, what eat and what not to eat, wildlife...basically just a very thorough guide. Would recommend to anyone traveling to Pacific Mexico!

I'm an avid traveler, guide book user and guide book writer. I bought this book because it was about 1/2 the size of the Lonely Planet Mexico book (which covers the whole country) and would have been much better off lugging the larger book around for my month on the coast.Why? The maps are not very good (and do not have content boxes) and there are no bus schedules (note: these are likely not the fault of the author but of the publisher). I didn't agree with some of the restaurant recommendations and found some gems that should have been in the book. There were not enough accommodations listed (and those listed did not need such long descriptions). Confusing driving directions. Mis-information (like stating no surfboard rentals when there were 3 places that rented them) that I did not expect in a book published 2 months prior to my trip.On a positive note, there is some good background info in the book (history, food, culture).I know Mexico is a huge place and its hard to nail down everything when researching a guidebook, but as I said, LP did a far better job in producing a more useful book for travelers. Resort tourists looking for a little something outside the gates might be satisfied with this book.

GREAT source to prepare for your first visit to Machu Picchu. Lots of history. How much of the book is 'propaganda' ? Yes it was written many years after Bingham made his discovery, and yes some parts may have been embellished a bit - that's ok. Most of the book is very interesting to someone (me) who had not much knowledge of Inca history. I recommend - if you're going, read this book first.

I recently came back from Machu Picchu and had an interest in learning about its discovery directly from Hiram Bingham. I thought it was overall an interesting read. A majority of the book gives you a history of the Incas and how they fell from power. Hiram also speaks about his desire to locate what he knew to be Vilcabamba, the last Inca holdout before the Spanish Conquistadors ended the Inca rule for good. It's important to note that although it's mentioned in Hiram's book, some of his theories about the purpose of Machu Picchu were later disputed. The most important one was the fact that Machu Picchu was NOT the last stronghold of Tupac Amaru.I know some people disagree over whether it's better to read the book before or after visiting Machu Picchu, but I'm honestly glad I read it after my trip. It was interesting to go through the last chapter on his excavations and think to yourself: "I know EXACTLY where he's talking about!" I can picture his route there because the trip was still fresh in my mind and I had a great understanding of the altitude and appreciation for climbing through the jungle for more than an hour to get to the top of Machu Picchu. The most interesting read to me was about his companion who attempted to climb Huayna Picchu. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to climb it during my trip and that was honestly the most challenging thing I've ever done. Huayna Picchu is a vertical hike and it took tremendous effort to climb all the way to the top. That makes me appreciate the time it took Bingham's companion, Mr. Heald, to get there even more. Apparently Mr. Heald had to cut his way through lots of jungle and fell at one point, badly hurting his arm. When I got to the top of Huayna Picchu I saw lots of home structures built into the side of the mountain. What I find most fascinating is the fact that Hiram Bingham mentions that when he and his men first explored Huayna Picchu in 1912 there were NO structures on Huayna Picchu, simply several stairs, a few terraces and three caves. That means all of the home structures on Huayna Picchu were built later by the modern Peruvian government.The best part of the book, however, were copies of original photos taken by Hiram Bingham in 1912. You get to see what Machu Picchu looked like when he discovered the ruins and began his excavations. It's amazing to compare his photos side-by-side with what the Peruvian government has done today. Several of the structures were literally rebuilt but there are still a few that haven't been touched and are in their original form from 600+ years ago. At least one of the structures is an altar that the Inca used for animal sacrifices. The right portion of the structure has crumbled, and I easily spotted it in Bingham's original photo. I'm pleased to say that as of 2012 there were no changes and it looked exactly as it did when Hiram saw it in 1911.For any history buff, this is certainly a good read. It's perfect for the Machu Picchu visitor.

This is a very special book to me. It helped me understand Machu Piccu before and after I visited there. The man explains step by step how he proceeded. I found him a curious and interesting man who should have done more great things--but this was essentially what he is known for.

Hiram Bingham wrote this book many years after he "discovered" Machu Picchu in order to make some money. The book provides a lot of information - too much. Parts seem to be written more for archeologists than for laymen. I am scheduled to visit Machu Picchu which is why I read the book. For anyone else planning on going there, it is worth reading.

I had started this book before leaving for our Machu Picchu trip, but got distracted reading other things about the trip and did not finish it beforehand. I did finish the book a couple of weeks after returning, which in hindsight, is the best way to absorb the material. After having travelled through the Sacred Valley, through Ollantaytambo and along the Urubamba River and witnessing firsthand the marvelous scenery and geography of Peru, it was so much more meaningful to read about Bingham's adventures in locating the Lost City of the Incas. The steep cliffs and valleys, thick jungle vegetation and narrow passes are still foreboding today, let alone over 100 years ago without the benefit of highways and GPS !Additionally, it was useful to read the book after having heard from our professional Peruvian guides how they feel about Bingham's adventures. The Peruvians seem to have a love/hate relationship with Bingham. They acknowledge him as the "scientific discoverer" of the ruins, but they also state that the Indians were living and farming at the ruins and knew about them all along. Many of the gravesites had already been plundered over the centuries. They also acknowledge that Bingham's determination and commitment essentially created the modern tourism industry in Peru. They also believe that Bingham and his crew took away valuable artifacts (perhaps gold and silver) which were never accurately catalogued and disclosed.It was interesting to read about the excavation and process of discovery of landmarks in the ruins that we had had a chance to see firsthand. The pictures were particularly fascinating as they demonstrated how challenging it was to clear the ruins of the hundreds of years of jungle growth and try to discover the use and meaning of each dwelling and structure. For all the criticism lodged against Bingham over the years, he documented the site thoroughly with over 12,000 photos and drawings and kept meticulous records. His writing was also clear and thorough and concise, and he had a great reverence for the significance of this wonderful sanctuary.Highly recommended for anyone who is about to visit Machu Picchu or has already visited. You can't go there without understanding the impact of Bingham on the modern history of Peru.

Interesting, but to often felt I was walking hip-high through sand. Better choice to read is the very funny and interesting book, Turn Right at Machu Picchu

Same-sex attraction is not an abstract theological or political issue, but a very personal one since I've experienced it from a very young age. My journey started out during my teenage years by reading books from the Christian ex-gay movement, which were mainly pseudo-scientific psychological analyses of why people have homosexual inclinations and how to diminish or eliminate them. Needless to say, when my homoerotic desires did not go away, I was very discouraged. Also, my personal background did not fit the typical ex-gay narrative of why people are gay. For example, I always had a close relationship with my two loving parents and was never abused by anyone. The goal is not an elimination of same-sex temptation per se, but holiness and chastity in relationship with God and others. Hill is firmly grounded in the traditional sexual ethic which sees marriage as being between one man and one woman for life. This means that many gay Christians may be called to long-term celibacy, and this poses some hard challenges for the man or woman who embarks on this path.The book Spiritual Friendship has been such an encouragement to me as I seek to pursue Christ-honoring friendship with other brothers (and sisters) in the church. When reading the book, one of the biggest epiphanies for me was that committed spiritual friendships deserve a place of honor within the church, just as we honor the institution of marriage. However, these deep and intimate friendships do not happen accidentally but require intentional ways of fostering and nurturing those relationships.The most poignant chapter for me was the one in which Wesley tells the story of losing an intimate friendship with a male friend after his friend began a romantic relationship with a girl. This strikes close to home because I've experienced a similar scenario with my best friend. Probably the most discouraging part of friendship is the fear that these friends may be temporary. It is hard to invest so much emotional capital in a relationship only to fear that your friend will not always be there with you. As C. S. Lewis says, "To love at all is to be vulnerable." Borrowing from Tom Stoppard's play, *The Invention of Love,* Hill's metaphor for this kind of friend is a piece of ice held in your fist. No matter how tightly you hold the piece of ice, it will eventually melt and disappear, leaving only raw pain in its absence. Friendship, Hill says, is not always a bed of roses, but a call to suffering.The answer, however, is not to seal yourself off from spiritual friendships but to pursue them in faith, knowing that Christ calls us in the church to a sort of vowed spiritual siblinghood. While acknowledging the very real experience of suffering in many relationships, Hill also relates other very positive personal experiences of enjoying close ties of friendship with other men and women, even to the point of sharing living arrangements with a married couple and their children. He also relates several examples from biblical and church history where two men or two women have loved each other in ways that are not romantic, but are just as strong and intense.In the final chapter, he give some very practical advice on how churches can help foster an environment where these kinds of friends flourish. The book ends in a vision of hope and expectation.This is a challenging book that all Christians would benefit from reading, whether in church leadership or not. I think the author has the best intentions, and he tells a compelling story. And he has sound insights about friendship. Yes, it is a greatly neglected thing in our society, and we suffer for it; particularly men. And I think he's right that those with sexual attraction to the same sex will benefit from more friends and deeper friendships. All this is to the good.That said, I conclude that the author works from an anthropology that is faulty. Namely, he seems to think that a homosexual orientation is something God intends, and is a positive good. I cannot agree with that; and while I don't question the author's sincere Christian beliefs -- nor his faithfulness as a Christian -- I do think this is idea will not work from a Christian point of view. The Catholic view -- I am a Catholic, and yes, I realize the author is not -- is that while a sexual attraction to the same sex is not, per se, immoral, it is "intrinsically disordered." This makes far better sense.Also, I found myself wondering if the author was going through a really fragile stage in his life when he wrote this. There is a neediness in his account of friendship that perhaps many others can identify with, I imagine, but is not -- to my mind -- really healthy. In other words, I wonder if the issue for the author isn't his sexual attraction to other guys as much as co-dependency? It is good to want and seek out strong, healthy, deep friendships. But it isn't good to be overly dependent and needy. I found myself wondering how well the author saw one bleeding into the other?Finally, the author is really weak in arguing for some sort of "vowed friendship." He tries to argue that this is well attested in Christian tradition. Well, of course, you can find an example of almost anything in 2,000 years of history if you look hard enough, and squint just the right way; but the evidence is thin and not persuasive. Relying on John Boswell is a huge tell. He points to Aelred, and, then Aelred again, and...how about some more Aelred?Bottom line, I think the author has valid insights; but we must wait for someone else to take up the baton of reviving friendship in our time, especially for the benefit of those who have erotic same-sex feelings and intend to be chaste.

I was very excited when I bought this book. It did not disappoint. I am a celibate gay Christian who struggles with loneliness a lot of the time. Wes Hill's book provides me hope that being gay and holding to a traditional sexual ethic is not impossible. Hill introduces Evangelicals to rich medieval concept of spiritual friendships and provides a narrative for those of us who are gay and celibate that we do not have to be consigned to a life loneliness.Hill talks a lot about how friendship has become diminished in modern times. I very much appreciated this critique. Overall this book was very helpful for me and I learned a lot from it.

Excellent book for the layman that gives you in simple terms what you need to know and do for mitochondrial optimisation. I didn't give it 5, cos it wasn't up to scratch on sunbathing/sunscreen (see Mercola.com for that) and advocates soy, whereas that's a endocrine toxin etc. Also she didn't say what brand of glutathione she takes - the name of it. i had to look on the web to try and find it and from that I presume it's Quicksilver. We also need to know whether it needs to be cold all the time. It seems so. She didn't mention that raw egg white is a potent glutathione precursor (as is non-denatured, cold processed whey powder). She does use egg white in the optimal pudding but it's apparently not for this reason, and she uses processed egg white.

If a book gets to scientific I start to fade away. She does a great job of explaining details while keeping you interested. I bookmarked lots of pages in it. Mitochondria can explain so many things, so many illnesses. They are responsible for how your body uses oxygen and digests food, especially fats and sugars. I'm sick now because AL the antibiotics I was given I'm sure decimated the mitochondria, now I have to get them back, or at least strengthen the ones I have. A god list of supplements insude, maybe more then I wanted to know. Just wish I had a doctor that knew this stuff to help me implement it.

Wow, Dr. Bennett is very thorough!! Anything and everything you could possible want to know (and some stuff you wish you didn't) will be found in this book on gut health. I'm not very knowledgable about medical terminology, but Dr. Bennett explained in easy to understand terms how the body functions, why we encounter digestive discomfort and upset tummy's, and what to do about these issues. The insight into understanding our guts are the root cause of most all disease is eye opening. I feel more hopeful and optimistic that balancing my internal digestive systems will bring better health and function to my body as a whole. She gives a simple easy to follow plan to regain health and wellness, and has fun in the process.

I first heard Dr Bennett speak during an online health talk about root causes of fatigue. This book was mentioned during the talk and I made a note to look at it. This book does a great job explaining the job of mitochondria and how vital that they are healthy and strong. It has a very clear plan to follow to recharge your mitochondria along with recipes to try. It’s a good place to start if you want to take some steps on your own to improve your mitochondrial health. This book is good for people struggling with fatigue and for people that want to investigate the root causes behind fatigue.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very informative and inspiring - especially the science behind laughter therapy - and why sleep is so important.

I love Susanne Bennett is is a powerhouse herself. I love her.People need to eat to promote their Mitochondria! How sad our modern day lives do not promote and educated folks to take care of our miraculous bodies.
